I’m of Mauritian descent but born in England, and I am a proud Brit. I fully understand why the UK didn’t return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius upon its independence in 1968. Strategically, Mauritius has long been regarded as the key to the Indian Ocean, a region of critical geopolitical importance. The military base on Diego Garcia, within the Chagos Archipelago, has played a vital role in maintaining regional security, ensuring the stability of international sea lanes, and supporting broader Western interests during the Cold War and beyond. However, while the strategic reasoning made sense, the way the Labour government of Harold Wilson handled the situation was deeply wrong. The forced displacement of the Chagossian people, expecting them to quietly fade away, was a gross violation of their human rights. These islanders were removed from their ancestral homes, families uprooted, and livelihoods destroyed, all without proper consultation or compensation. To make matters worse, Britain pocketed the £50 million annual lease from the US for the military base, while ignoring the plight of the Chagossians. After decades of tireless struggle by the Chagossians for justice, I am proud that Britain, my country of birth, has finally done the right thing. The decision to return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius is long overdue, but it is a just and moral outcome. From 2036, a new 99-year lease will be established, and this time, the income will go directly to Mauritius. This is a major victory for both Mauritian sovereignty and for the islanders who were wronged for so long. Mauritius, a nation with very few natural resources, has always relied on its people to drive its progress. Since independence, the country has worked incredibly hard to build a thriving, diverse, and free-market economy, becoming a model that many African nations look to for inspiration. Every time I visit family there, I am amazed by the continued positive development on the island, driven by the dedication and resilience of its people. The new lease income will, I hope, be wisely invested in furthering the island’s economic and social progress, contributing to a fairer and more prosperous society. I am also pleased that the military base will remain operational, ensuring continued regional security. While the base provides strategic stability in a region that remains geopolitically sensitive, Mauritius also benefits from the added security that comes with hosting such an important military presence. Moreover, it’s worth noting that another military base is currently being developed on Agalega, a Mauritian island, under a lease to India. With cooperation between India, the US, the UK, and Mauritius, we are witnessing the emergence of a powerful alliance for security and peace in the Indian Ocean region. As a proud Brit, I am relieved that our government has finally done the right thing. While it has taken far too long, the return of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius signals a significant step forward. It is a moment of justice for the Chagossians, an affirmation of Mauritian sovereignty, and a reaffirmation of Britain’s commitment to doing what is morally right. This new chapter in British-Mauritian relations, along with our shared security interests, represents a positive future for the region and the world. ❤🇬🇧❤️🇲🇺

What a joke
Can the English give back Northern Ireland and maybe the whole of the British isles back to the celts 😂
England never took N.I. and the British Isles have an indigenous population including the English.
The "Celts" invaded from Europe and Scotland created the union, not England.
