The Indian media is north centric and views southern artists with contempt and generally ignores them. Moreover, they are not competent enough to understand and appreciate the artists of this calibre.
Absolutely brilliant! It is sad that Guru Mani is seldom seen on the net despite being one of the greatest of his era. This took me out of the world....Pranam on your feet...!
I am awestruck and keep revisiting this video from 2:11, from where G Harishankar sir joins Mani sir with perfect accuracy, speed n ease which is unmatchable!!! I Bow down to that divine soul!!!
unbelievable playing, extraordinaire! after the untimely passing away of harishankar i hope that karaikudi mani will be posted and published more, he is practically invisible on the net whereas he is the greatest mridangist of the century! regards, chander sardjoe

If not for his Ideosyncracies he would be the most Revered Guru, Mrudangist and Legend after PMI, Raghu sir UKS and TKM... He made unwanted and unnecessary comments, articles about Academy and other sabhas and even a few musicians which didn't go well with VVIPS of Carnatik circuit. Therefore he was not welcomed by majority of old sabhas and he had more Foes than friends Which made him unpopular. But according to me and with my Vast knowledge about Mrudangists, he is A Percussionist par excellence and to be at top 5 of the doyens of Mrudangists this country has ever produced.
Criticism has to be taken in the right way, constructive way, not the way it was dealt with. Guru Karaikudi Mani sir is a true legend and he sets the stage on fire with his performance. Unmatched Talent . Why rate him after others, he is the top one artist. No one can match him.
Not withstanding his personal perspective about music, musicians, academy etc., mahavidvan Mani's style, especially his concert accompaniment is refreshingly original and he is in a class by himself. Like senior Mani iyer, Junior Karaikudi Mani's mridangam playing is not borne out of what was taught to him. It is innate, and honed by enormous abyasa. Palghat Mani iyer also spoke strongly about what he felt authentic. He had his share of back baiters then as well. But in Karaikudi Mani case, he did not have that pedigree of patronge that Palghat Mani iyer enjoyed, or he could develop a strong coterie to bash his opponents. To my knowledge, he cared a little damn for these. For all that he spoke about academy etc, he was not far away from truth. Regrettably, in arts and science, we have strong ragadwesham. Person vis a vis his contributions are not assessed separately, while honouring talent. KM is a case in point.
You are welcome. I am just a friend and admirer of Varmaji. You can write to him directly if you like. His user ID is musique4ever. All the best! Cheers! M
I wonder why we Indians are not hailing these musicians ... They are the legends who are not at all projected by the Indian Medias ... PATHETIC ...
Bcuz this music is for Gods, not people, primarily... imho
instaBlaster...
Maybe because they are GENUINE...

Guru Karaikudi mani is the greatest mrudangist in my eyes irrespective of whatever ideosyncracies you mentioned..
