At that very same spot where you were positioned to ride across the road at 15:36, I almost lost my life 30 years ago.
I attended the Federal Government College Ijanikin in the early 90s. I was in the boarding house but I bailed out of school on this day with the hope of returning the next morning but things didn't go according to plan so I found myself on the way back to school at around 10pm.
I alighted at Iyana Era bus stop with the plan to walk down Era Road for about 200 meters, scale the fence at the school field and walk back to the dormitory.
I took a look into the pitch darkness that was Era Road and I was overcome by fear. I decided against this proposed route and instead walked towards the school gate on the side of the road that I had alighted from the bus.
The new plan was to walk through the school gates (at the time it wasn't sealed off as you have it in this video) turn right towards the staff quarters pretending I lived there and then find my way back to the dormitory through the maze of classroom blocks
When I had walked up to the vicinity of the school I decided to cross the road at around the point Steve rides across. I crossed into the median Steve was located in at 15:36 and waited for my opportunity to cross.
I saw the headlights of what I assumed to be a bus and planned to run across once the bus had gone past. When the headlights went past me, I made the motion to cross immediately and I got the biggest shock of my life, my face was an inch from the trailer that was being pulled by the truck I had assumed to be a bus.
I froze in shock and due to the realisation of how close I had come to death I lost all fear of being caught by the guards. I just walked towards the gate, said good evening to the guards and walked towards the staff quarters. I can't remember if they queried me as everything was now just a blur but I somehow found my way back to the dormitory. That was one of my closest shaves with death.
I remember my time in Ijanikin with fond memories. Breaking bounds to go to Okoko for Iya Ghana rice, to MadHouse in Saka Jojo. V.I to play Street Fighter 2, watching USA 94 in a viewing centre in Alraine and running the Era Race.
