I hope everyone understands just what a potential mind field F9 is setting up for themselves with these videos.
Because F9 is also a retailer, it is difficult to be honest about product and test them in public like this. If anyone of the manufacturers does not like a result or feels that they do want to be shown in any of these videos, they can pull their product from the store: meaning Ryan and the staff at FortNine will lose their livelihoods, potentially.
Let's keep supporting them so we can get at the truth and push the manufacturers to give us the best possible gear they can.
The silver lining is that, as a retailer, F9 has a leg up on moto publications. Suppliers can be unhappy with this video series, but if they pull their products, they lose out on an important retailer in Canada and that would hurt them more than it would hurt F9. Moto mags/etc. rely on supplier ads, so the general perception, at least, is that they aren't as harsh in reviews as they could be.
While this series is obviously done in good fun (most gear is never going to be subjected to a flamethrower, for instance), I do very much appreciate Ryan's honesty here and in the regular product reviews.
Na screw that. If the supplier stops giving fortnine test samples, that tells me the supplier has something to hide. If that is the case, then I won't buy a SHADY built product made or involving that supplier. Fortninr Ryan is just doing what ALL of us bikers wish every manufacturer would have the guts to do.... TEST their product in front of the public. Kudos to Fortnine!
@@motoryzen The suppliers don't give them the products to Test. Fortnine buys the equipment they want to test or review with the exception being bikes which are a bit too pricy for that.
@@SirNarax Ok, regardless that doesn't defeat the common sense behind my point a year or two ago. Shady is still shady..a slice of pizza is still a pizza at the end of the day.
Seems more real than revzilla
I'd like to see some glove testing! Would be interesting to see the abrasion resistance test to see what it's like to slide
It's coming! We're actually testing a pair of gloves that have been ridden with for two years, against an identical pair that is brand new. Should be interesting to see how it goes. ~RyanF9
Sounds great! See you there.
I have an N44. Yes. They are loud. But I live in FL and riding in the summer is pretty bad. The vents in these are amazing and worth the road noise. Just a few miles an hour purges the helmet of hot air and replaces it very well with much cooler air. I use an Ncom so I listen to music anyway.
Suppliers are getting upset for you doing and giving out good need to know info on safest safety riding gear.... SMDH.
Screw them! My family and I ride and want to be as safe as possible on two wheels. Keep up the good work!
Hey Ryan, Another quality vid, love the porn music and the slow mo smile...Question, after first dropping the helmet, don't you compromise the integrity so subsequent drops are bound to fail? I was always taught a helmet was only good for one hard knock so I would expect any fall after the first to fail.... ???
Hey Adam! In theory, the answer is yes... a helmet is bound to fare worse after it has already been dropped once. But as we do more and more of these tests, we're finding that it doesn't seem to make *that* much difference in the real world. A lot of the time we test helmets that fail the first test and pass the second and third ones. Of course in a perfect world we'd use a brand new helmet for each impact test, but... $$$. Cheers! ~RyanF9
If you're looking to replicate the swing you can bolt a mallet/hammer at the end of a rod/wooden pole and pull it to the same height every time. This also allows you to calculate the Newtons transferred to the lid. However.... you wouldn't get to let some steam out whomping it..... haha
My wrists cringe every time I see him swing into an immovable object.
Love the testing! Also love the fact that F9 really doesn't give a crap what the manufactures think when it comes to unbiased and honest reviews. Keep up the good work F9! These videos are how I found out about your business and already my wallet is much lighter!
Oh finally a road noise test that applies also in italy, that's exactly what you hear on the italian roads, that's why they made the nolan noisy, so that you can hear the folk italian music all around you! Lol
I did not understand what you mean, sorry
Could you try doing a cheaper helmet, say 100-150 dollars, just to compare against the higher priced brands. Great video's as always
Yep! We're testing an oober-cheap helmet against an expensive competitor in the next few weeks. ~RyanF9
FortNine please do a test on ls2 and my helmets
FortNine could you test the Joe Rocket 7-series ?
First again. Ryan is so happy, he can burn stuff again! Awesome video
Ryan, how serious were you about suppliers not being too happy about you destroying their stuff? :D
It's legit... suppliers none too pleased with this series haha. ~RyanF9
Are they taking any kind of action against FortNine or just telling you that they're upset?
The more pissed off they get, means your doing your job. I give your channel 10 F9's
What happened to the baseball bat ? :) The drop test is far fairer but it is not the same test the previous helmets went through . Do I need to find a Guy wearing a N44 & greet him with a baseball bat ? :)
The new method is better & I enjoy the vids !!!
Hey Brent! You're right - we ditched the baseball bat in favour of a fairer testing method. We also tried our best to calibrate the drop height and weight to match the force that I can swing a baseball bat. It's not perfect, but should still be comparable-ish to the previous tests. Cheers! ~RyanF9
Baseball bat was more entertaining.
just a thought, but after the first drop, isn't the structural integrity of the shell compromised, thus (possibly) affecting the ability to withstand/hold-up on the subsequent drops, even though those next ones target a different area? not suggesting that it's necessarily enough to affect the results, but in the real world, after a significant impact (such as in the drop test), a helmet would be (or, should be) replaced. obviously, that's not an option for your testing, but something that could be mentioned.
Hey Trevor! Yep, you're absolutely right. ~RyanF9
Trevor Lloyd
Think of the drop test as a consecutive impact test... To simulate falling from the bike hitting your head, then hitting another object during the time it takes your body to come to a stop.
Fuck the suppliers man (to an extent), us riders gotta know what works out there, can't take any company at face value, and shouldn't when your life is being put on the line with there gear.
How about scraping some stuff over rough asphalt for testing purpouses? ;)
I'd love to see you guys put an HJC CL-17 through these tests. Might be cool to see how a budget option compares to the big boys.
Well.. this exact helmet.. model and color has been in my wishlist for months now due to budget constrain.. And here u are.. distroying one..
My apologies! If it's any consolation, this one had a cosmetic defect that meant we couldn't sell it anyway. ~RF9
Great video! Do you know if there's any difference in safety/components between the N44 and the N44 Evo - as far as I can tell the only difference is in a Comfort Lining on the inside?
now does my nolan knock off LS2 OF569 hold up as well. there's a test.
Thank you so much for going so in depth with these reviews! Helps a ton
instablaster
I was sweating this test since I ride with an N44... Nice to see a good score,
Thank you so much Fort. I have 2 x Nolan N44 lids and have always wondered how safe the chin bar would be. Yay, very happy with your result. Have never seen the chin bar tested before. Can confirm that the N44 visibility is superb. Great fun vid. Have subscribed. Cheers.
4:55 “abrasion azziztance” lol
The chin bar test was indeed surprising. I'd like to see how the shell of the Scorpion GT920/AT950 would withstand your crash tests. Love the videos, love the channel, great work.
I think it would be fun if after you finish all of the real tests and score it, you do something else to it like blow it up, you don't have to blow it up obviously its up to you, just a suggestion.
it could also be fun if you use a P.O box and let subs send you gear to review, with maybe an email asking if you would want to use it before they send it over and never gets used
also great videos, they are very well done
Excellent quality videos, keep it up!
hope to see other modular helmet tested here,..
espesially shark evo series or ls2 valiant..
i bought a n40-5 gt classic. at first glance it doesn't seem to be all that different from the n44 evo, but it is quite cheaper, as i bought it for 209 euros. i run some comparisons and i couldn't find why.
Legitimate consumer information is dangerous to these companies, which is why its near impossible to acquire. Thank you for making this information available!
I wear this helmet specifically for the airflow. Try riding around Houston, Texas in the months of July and August; and you will sympathize... dead calm wind all summer long and temperature gets down to 90-F at 4AM morning.
hey ! you are just the best crash-testman of helmets !!!! very top !!! in fact, i don't know if i take n44 evo or n104 absolute..... dificult choise ..... what do you think ?
Maybe you should have used your seven iron instead on the chin bar test. 😊. I noticed three other clubs in the background...just curious why you need four irons?
Haha good eye Rick. We figured we might break a club or two eventually, so we brought some spares into our testing lab. ~RyanF9
What is the significance of the 50g impact test (100g for this video, for whatever reason for the change)? Why 50g instead of 40g or 60g? Is that the limit where a human brain would suffer a concussion? Thanks.
Sorry, if the chinbar detaches, even on one side, that has to be a fail, because a typical "get off" involves more than a single impact. If you are sliding down the tarmac facedown with a half detached chin bar, you're not gonna have much of a face left.
Also this test completely misses the basic Snell type test which is dropping a steel bar or similar object from a height on to the helmet and seeing if it goes through or cracks the shell. You guys only dropped the helmet on the floor. That's not the same not at all.
The Snell penetration test is garbage anyway dude the bsi and ECE standards both disagree with it as a relevant metric same for the ACU gold standard
All of the helmets with wind scoops also have to realize that these are also bug scoops. Therefore, there must be a method or way to flush that crud out. I have yet to find a way to flush it out without liquid flowing around my ears for a few rides. I don't care much for the wind scoops because they just aren't that effective. Would like to know why you don't like N-Com? I have had a Nolan N44E without the chin bar. I have been overall happy with it, even though the washable liner seem to wear out faster than a non-washable liner. I've taken some slaps to the head from slow speed falls and it's still intact. I've also taken some rocks and very large bugs to the shield; no scratches or dings. I'm buying another. Just a bit curious about the N-Com though.
It´s fairly obvious there´s less chance of that chin bar coming off through that impact coming direct on ... slightly at an angle from the side would of sent it flying I´m sure
I owned it and have to disagree with comments saying its a noisy helmet. The truth, this helmet is amazingly quiet, WITH the chin curtain intact and visor down. Maybe those find it noisy maybe due to wrong size, owns a alien shaped head, or evaluate noise by using helmet visor up. "Perfect world is imperfected by humans ourselves thus end up with neverending conflicts worldwide" imho
FCk i love this helmet...but because of the chinbar i bougth an N87 for myself. In the name of safety... :(
I want my money back :D
Nice !!! ... just bought a N44 Evo and was wondering about its resistance.
are you happy with that ? Is it noisy ? Is it cool ? would you prefer the Nolan N70-2 GT with smaller air vents ?
Good job on the UA-cam ad lol only reason I found this channel and subbed.
Sweet! Welcome. ~RF9
@Josh Podolsky fps and kph are very close. 1m/s = 3.6km/h = ~3.3ft/s. 500kph = 455fps.
I think you should remove abrasion, heat, and puncture resistance. They seem unimportant to the requirements of a helmet. Maybe spend more time on impact strength than anything. I say abrasion because their so no situation were the abrasion on your helmet would be a problem in a crash, nor should you care how usable the helmet is after being damaged. A helmet should only be good for one crash, that's what it is designed for.
I wish you could publish which suppliers are getting pissy at you guys, there would be a fair amount of people here that would put them on the do not buy list. Pissy Suppliers over your videos means they are trying to hide something, sorry I won't take that risk with my safety.
Icon Variant please.
Very soon. ~RF9
can you recommend a full face helmet with an equivalent field of vision
Bell Bullet
I’ve never jumped off o stool with a helmet on, at least I don’t ever remember doing that!!
I find the N44 very noisy. Must admit I don't have much to compare with but my impression after first ride is that it is worse than my old N40.
Can't say if it the vents on top that cause the loud wind noise or what it is. I had the vents closed.
Why has no one made a helmet from a viscoelastic material like sastech yet? That way you could either get rid of or have much less eps foam, meaning you could reuse the helmet without compromising safety
Can you do a “samething” on Nolan n70 gt thanks! ....or maybe add a water pouring test ~
As an italian good pronunciation on yours "per favore" and "grazie" Ryan =D
Cheers! I spent a very short amount of time in Italy... pretty sure those two words were the only ones I mastered haha. ~RyanF9
Can't go wrong with learning the words for "Please" and "Thank you"... when it comes to visiting places.
Actually, the heat resistance test is a pass. The important thing is that the helmet doesn't allow the fire to burn. and it doesn't. and it doesn't even melt.
Did you said Εντάξει or am I hearing stuff.
For heat resistance you should really be measuring temperature inside the helmet, the visual response to fire doesn't necessarily indicate whether or not the heat was passed through to the riders head.
Hello, RyanF9. I would like to meet BryanD8.
according to Arai dropping a helmet with nothing in it should have no effect. it changes when you have weight inside
Respect for skid lid protection, but looks like a skip 🤔 nice helmet 🤣😂⛑️
What a dedicated and awesome review, you deserve more views my man. I just want to thank you.
I call shenanigans on the chinbar. It doesn't meet dot standards and isn't considered a protective portion of the helmet.
what would you say is a great fitting jacket? I'm looking at the joe rocket reactor thanks to you beginner gear video,, but being that I'm 6'3 and 170 lbs i figure I'm pretty much built about like you and you said it was a little short which always sucks on the bike. Wondering if theres a better fitting alternative to consider for us tall skinny guys. thanks and great videos!
Hey! A great alternative is the Icon 1000 Basehawk (fortnine.ca/en/icon-1000-basehawk-jacket). Same flexi-athletic material, even better armouring and a perfect slim fit for us skinny guys. I wear a medium in that jacket. Only downside is that it's quite a bit more expensive :( I chat about the Basehawk in this video by the way (ua-cam.com/video/UD0QUKZwfsA/v-deo.html). Cheers! ~RyanF9
Where I can I find the video of your test of the FirstGear Ranier jacket? I'm interested to see how it could have scored so high, but I can't find the video.
Unfortunately we didn't edit together a full video for that one! When we tested that jacket we were still figuring out our filming method. In short, the Rainier only failed the puncture and chest armor tests. ~RyanF9
Gotcha. Thanks for the reply. On a side note, what are your thoughts on the Katmandu vs. the Kilimanjaro?
you should check out the Ruroc Atlas sport it is supposed to be really durable with an ece and dot certificatation
I have this helmet...the interior sucks.....and the front chin guard, I think that will not protect my teeth very much
I can’t help but to watch all of this guys videos.
You make really interesting videos, but do you have to much money.
Love the channel guys. BUT....... their is a huge flaw to your testing methods. mainly the impact tests and heat resistance tests. with the impact tests specially on the helmet's after the first impact they are not going to be at the peak any more but even worse is you have compromised the strength already by shooting a hole in it. Helmets are designed to protect you from that initial impact and the rolling/sliding that comes after. after that first big impact its going to lose a lot of its strength. as for the heat resistance test it is just way off. you are testing fire resistance not heat. so unless the helmet is meant to protect your head encase you trip and land in a camp fire and then just lay there in the fire for a bit it is flawed. I better way to test heat resistance is to remove the flame aspect of it. Use an oven and set it to a reasonable heat that the helmet would actually have to deal with. Like what ever the heat could get up to on the back window of a car in the middle of a heat wave in Arizona or something. or the temp that the asphalt gets in those conditions. If you test the equipment in as close to real conditions as possible your suppliers can't get mad. In fact they might start giving you stuff just to test. just got to make the test fair. Just approach it from a different angle. if the tests go well that's going to help increase their sales of those products. People like being able to see stuff get tested with their own eyes. Specially when it involves their own safety. these crash tests you guys do are my favorite thing you guys do. (not that I dislike any of it) I just want to help keep moto journalism honest. LOL (sorry had too. have seen your You-Tube add about 7 times today) Sorry for the novel. I hope you do read this though. I just love what you guys do and want to help make it even better. Plus the fact that you guys are fellow Canadians is awesome. Even if you do come from THAT Province. JK lol Come ride out here in Alberta some time tons of old horse trails and off road areas to do some adventure riding. Anyways keep up the awesome content and please take this as just some constructive criticism from a fan who wants to help make you guys even better.
Hey D'Arcy! Really appreciate the feedback, especially the oven idea. I think that's something we could (and should!) incorporate into our tests very easily. Sorry for spamming you with the UA-cam ad (lol)... I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to get it that many times in a row haha. Cheers! ~RyanF9
The fact you replied to my comment makes me love this channel even more RyanF9. If you ever come to Calgary and want to tour guide look me up. I have lived all over Alberta my entire 36 year old life Would love to show you around. We have it all here.....well except an ocean ..........or any really big lakes lol
Its suppose to be heat Not fire . but thank you we know that Nolan has a dope quality
I used a Nolan helmet from 1988 to 1997 in California and Spain. One of the best overall helmets I’ve ever owned. I had two of them. My son loaned them both out to friends and we never got them back. But his friends used them for 4 years. Obvious quality build to last that long. Made my famous freeze run from Rota Spain to Madrid. 20 degree weather. Worked just fine without fogging at all. That was in January of 1993 I believe.
9:22 That is clearly a monster, that shit would be terrifying if you saw it at night.
Totally with you on the coms. Had nothing but problems with mine.
Your suppliers should never whine about you rating their products. They should just take your tests as reasons to build BETTER products. It's that simple
I found this very interesting.
I'm looking for large field of view helmets -either intergal or system, and then this modular helmet comes along, and the chin-bar test...wow!
Do you have more recommendations regarding large FOV helmets?
Did you ever find anything?
@@midgetman4206 no, I also am always too late, so, by the time I think: this is a cool helmet, only the very large or the very small sizes are available
Since ya'll did the Nolan N44, why not give the LS2 OF569 a shake? I mean its similar enough but a different price tag. I'd like to know how it compares
Apparently the normal LS2 OF569 is a 3/4 helmet, the LS2 OF569 SCAPE is the one that's very similar. Lol
By the way. You could slice it down for inside damage
Should have used Mambo Italiano for sound test.
only like half helmets , a little bit claustrophobic in a full face
I had one of these in a crash. Went back out to get another one the next day! One of the best helmets I have used so far. The best thing I would say is the visibility you get even though its a full face!
Thanks Dude... your experience really matters matters.. stay safe
So you can recommend it ? What about the noise on the city and doing a touring travel ?
Daaaaamn
so whats gonna replace the n44? did they discontinue it?
could/would you do a scorpion helmet test?
Yes and yes! We've got the EXO-R710 coming up soon. ~RyanF9
FortNine 👍👍👍
Ok this is crash test. Fine. I would however like to see if that chin bar is easy to attach when you wear the helmet.
It is, very easy. ~RyanF9
Thank you for answering. I think I will check out the X-lite version of this model. X-lite x-403 has 3 shell sizes.
Nolan builds solid helmets for a good price.
now this helmet is look interesting for me....
This was entertaining!!! thumbs up...
loled at the pc rating system
1:43 why not "il piave mormorò"
Because my Italian sucks.. ~RF9
how about a test on a $200-400 ls2 brain bucket?
Noooo, Ryan I see you have my alpinestars riding shoes in the lineup for next week. I know they can't be safe at all, but I've been living in denial. When you destroy them in the next video will you be sure to include some stylish alternatives that are actually protective?! Keep up the good work!
Hi, why you said you don't like n-com?
Hi,
I'm a big fan. Thank you for the great work you are doing.
Could you please make a review on Scorpion EXO-AT950?
Thanks
Seven 9's! Nolan for the win!
please do review of KYT KR1 please....
I had a nolan I decided to sell it it was falling apart, I find nolan very expensive compared to the quality very poor !
come on. heat resistance did not fail.
Everyone knows six nines is the perfect score.
This video was fucking epic!
please crash test a motodry visotec jacket
You should wear a respirator not a paper mask
I have to disagree with some posters here , I see that lot of very scientific thought and preparation went in to this test These people should review that videos again and study them carefully until they get it :)
. Keep em coming .
Well, what I can say. I would trust these videos with my head. It's good enough for me
Hello my friend, amazing video,, To be honest I was thinking to buy this helmet, but now I dont know hahaha.... I am looking for one that avoid the noise as I drive my bike in the freeways almos at 90 kms/h and on weekends I use the bike for touring.... According your test can you recomend me one ? I have the new BMW F750gs that is a kind of touring bike... Regards !
I love how you leaned into the water spray. It looks like you're having fun which makes me a little jelly because I don't have fun at work... ever.
P.S. I like how you "Stick it to the man" at the end.
I would love to see even more of these. Like for budget items like the Fly racing jacket I got for $89 or the bull it pants I got for under $100. There was also a Speed and Strength helmet I got for under $100, all of this on sale of course, but still not that much. I enjoy all this non-the-less. Great work!
Not a bad review. I've had a Nolan N44 for I can't remember how long and it has served me very well. So0 well that I've ordered a new N44 EVO and I would expect the same level of quality from it. Keep up the great reviews and tests, we all like them. And ride safe.
I own a N44 since three years now and I love it. Huge field of view, much bigger than any other helmet. I wonder why most of the other helmets have such a narrow FoV, I call that a safety risk.
Is it loud? I have another helmet that is is much louder, but it's a very cheap one, thought. I can make phone calls up to about 100 km/h and understand my counterpart, but it gets too noisy when I drive faster.
Ventilation is amazing! The vent on the chin has three positions and is very easy to open/close. The ones on the top are hard to operate with gloves, though. But I barely need to operate them while I drive.
