The great thing about home delivery is no impulse shopping for things that catch my eye. I stock up on the BOGO items only.

  • @TeresaS-q7x
    @TeresaS-q7x Місяць тому +5

Stock up items when stuff is on sale should never be skipped over just because you want to stay within a certain amount during the month.
For instance, if butter is on sale for $2.99, buy 5, one for now and 4 for later.
Mark the $2.99 price on each of the other 4 butters and put them in the freezer.
Subtract the 4 x 2.99 butter from this months grocery bill and every time you take something out of your freezer or pantry with a price on it, add it into that months grocery amount spent.
You will know if it's to be added to your bill as you pull it to use as you will see the price on it.
Do the same with pantry items.

You budget needs to go up. There’s nothing we can do about it. Don’t worry about the jam. It will cost more the next time you buy it. It keeps on the shelf for years. Might be nice for Christmas cookies.

I have a trick for adding things up without a calculator more easily: round up and down so there’s at least no cents. 4.35 + 8.88 + 13.45 = 4+9 which is 13 +13 is 36. If you get some combo of numbers you can’t do mental math with, just keep rounding. All 9s can be 10s. As long as you round up more than you round down you won’t go over your budget. It sounds harder than it is

      That’s what I do. If it’s 9.39 or above… it’s $10 in my head. If it’s $9.38 or less, it’s $9 in my head.

I see you mentioned some of the advice I gave you in a previous video. They do work…shopping sales to stock up and not bringing someone else shopping. I also plan my meals around what is on sale. I stretch my meals too. A rotisserie chicken can be eaten for dinner and leftovers can go for chicken pot pie, chicken salad, and chicken soup or stock. If ground beef is on sale I’ll make three meatloaves. One for today and two (unbaked) for the freezer for later. This actually saves time and money. The frozen meatloaf is good to have too if someone is in need of a meal such as an illness or new baby.

One thing that has really helped me is grocery pickup! Stores that offer that help keep me on budget. If I go in usually I end up getting things that aren’t on the list. Also I can go through my pantry at home and actively shop at the same time and get what I actually need! Great video! 😊

Tips I use: When ground beef is on sale I buy 20 pounds and cook all of it then freeze for later: taco meat, meat balls, plain hamburger for adding to meat sauce.
Cook whole bags of rice to freeze in meal sized portions. Bake whole 10 pound bags into twiced baked potatoes to freeze for later use.

i also alot on my list a misc. amount of 20.00 added right into my amount for a unadvertised sale...

Last week we were on vacation and I cooked using stuff I dont normally buy. Bread. Ground beef. Frozen potatoes. Ice cream. Cookies. Cereal. Broth. Frozen veggies.
Normally I cook everything from scratch, so this was very unusual.
The food wasnt bad. Some of it was pretty darn good for as quick as it was.
What it wasnt though, was inexpensive. For 8 people, we spent $375 for 8 days. Everyone pitched in so it didn't all fall on me, cost or work wise, but this is insane. Also, I gained 5lbs, mainly water weight from the excess salt I think. I didnt over eat, but I did snack a bit but it should have been compensated for by the increased level of activity.
Other than being back in my own bed the biggest thing im glad about in returning home is to be back in my home with my normal ingredients at my disposal.

I do feel the budget pain! I actually put eggs and other high priority items in my cart early, which makes it easier to say no to other items as I shop. Eggs make my life better. I do cough when I pay for them at their current "double price," but a dozen eggs is 6 days of eggs for me. That second dozen is 4 days of eggs for my dog children. Eggs really help keep us healthy. I have to remember that when I buy them - they are health gold in small packages. * Margarine - my rule of thumb is "run from the fake food." That is all I will say. I think you do an awesome job, Dawn. I could smell that recipe you were talking about!

So, the truth about all the pumpkin spice stuff is that very little of it contains pumpkin. It's just the spices. Cinnamon, nutmeg , all spice, ginger. I avoid the all spice because my husband is allergic. It's awesome because you can adjust the amounts of each spice to be what you like.

One nice thing about buying in bulk and online is that I tend to spend just about the same amount every 3 months.
I also grow what I can. But one thing I can't grow is celery. It just doesn't grow here. Hydroponics does work, but it looks like parsley it's so thin. So, instead I grow something called lovage. It tastes almost the same. Celeriac is a celery varient and that is much easier to grow. Look for alternatives.

That way, I ALWAYS have chicken, beef, pork and fish in the freezer. The rest of the weekly grocery budget is produce, bread, and whatever else I find on sale or clearance, to stock the pantry. I'm lucky that I have several stores within 10 miles of my house, though! 3 Krogers, 2 Aldi, Save A Lot, Giant Eagle, 2 Walmart,Discount Drug Mart( has fresh and frozen food). I really miss having the Bag ads , but look at each stores ads online now. Which ever store has the good deals is where we're going! If there's more than one I'll go to a couple and just get the loss leaders! That's how we can eat well! Buying fresh items in season is the best way to go! Around the holidays I stock up on sweet potatoes, turkey, ham, anything that stores well or I can freeze gets bought!😅😂
