  • I've been looking for one of these for ages!!!
I was actually due to pick something off marketplace but they cancelled... and I'm glad they did because the charity shops I visited instead were well worth it.
I tried some new charity shops but they were awful with sky high prices. its clear ebay solds are being used as a valuation tool for items in shops.... but ebay has a far greater reach than a local high street shop. prompted my to think about chazza pricing.
I'll also show you what's been selling on ebay for profit.

The issue when it comes to Charity shops is this...Charity shops were originally created to let people give items for free for those who have very little to be able to purchase what they need at an affordable price and in return the Charity makes a little money. Now in the past 15 or so years Charity shops have changed, they are now an actual business that makes HUGE profits for the "Charity" however when you look at it properly, they don't pay their staff, only the ones who run them! They are all massive multi million/billion companies and when you check how much of the £1 actually goes to those in need for the Charity you realise just were all the money we spend goes. It all goes to the top, all the head office brass. One Charity I saw a couple years ago were giving 5% to the actual Charity and the rest to "Running costs"....The shops if I am right pay no tax and very little rent? I don't really know how they get away with it all! I have no problem buying some of the prices and often go looking for what deals I can still make but knowing most of it won't even go to those in need is a bit disgusting.

Charities do pay the market rent for their shops but do not pay business rates. They still have to pay for utilities. A Salvation Army shop here (outside of the city centre) pays £18,000 per annum in rent for a shop that is 3m wide and about 8m long with about 3m used only for staff/donations. It is a well-respected shop not only for what it sells but what it offers as a community resource.

Hi there, Martina, Steiff collector and reseller located in Germany. I've been watching your videos for quite a while and I love them. Your one of my favorite UA-cam chanels. The button in the ear of that llittle Steiff bunny you bought at the Charity Shop is 100 % complete. That is the way the newer buttons look like. It is missing its Steiff tag at its breast, but still seems to be in very good condition. Keeper on doing the great work. I'm always looking forward to your next video.

Mate you've hit the nail on the head with the reason of price rise in charity shops. What is annoying about it is that the items are donated to the shops, where resellers like yourself have to pay. I think the shops should raise the prices but not as high as they do they still get a good profit but resellers would buy more.

I agree with the charity shop pricing debate, so many are using solds and even selling prices as what to base their prices on. I'm chuffed today as Conor, The Welshpokepicker bought something from my store 🙂, finally selling to someone famous ....

I think you're spot on with the charity shop pricing issue, Ian.
I've had it locally here in North Devon. Local shops spending hours and hours a day researching online what a £10 item is worth. All staff members chatting about what it sells for and celebrating - "Oh, there's one that sold for £12". Little do they know that was a year ago and now that same item is struggling to sell to a GLOBAL market for £6. Yet, a month later, it's still in their window...
I get that shops have targets and that we all want bargains, but if they're going to start putting out prices at or around eBay solds, they're going to start losing resellers AND the general public. It shouldn't be an us vs. them mentality, but I don't think any shop could argue that resellers' support is needed to keep them going. I'd rather work with these shops and their team, but most seem to see resellers as the enemy.
I think a lot of people have turned purely to car booting/marketplace just because of this. It's sad, but something's got to give. Prices can't just keep rising. It's certainly an interesting debate among us, that's for sure.

  • @Pogmothoin17

Yeah I completely agree with you about charity pricing. Also that UA-cam resellers are driving prices up and also giving themselves more competition by making it appealing to others to also become a reseller.
The UA-cam-led exposure to reselling has led to charity shops increasing their prices and also an increase in resellers which decreases the amount of bargains to be found.

I enjoy these videos don't get me wrong but as a collector of jellycat it's getting really annoying with people saying these are what you should look out for, they are worth money! Great now two of my local charity shops are asking £25 each and they have been there for weeks. Would have loved to have added them to the collection (not to re sell) but at those prices no.

I've built up relationships with a lot of my local charity shop managers so they sometimes hold things back for me. I'm very up front with them so i'll tell them what I think I'll realistically be able to resell for and then we agree a price that leaves me some margin but is in line with what they'd normally price it up at normally. If it's an item that I think they can realistically get more for in the shop than it's worth to me, I tell them that. I think by being honest and not getting too greedy, you end up with a relationship that's mutually beneficial. Obviously not all managers are reseller friendly though!

In relation to your last video, I can see the balance of both. I myself, have become a collector in the last year. Now, I for myself and for business. If I've seen things I had as child, like the original turtles lines, transformers, mask, he man or things I watched on TV, then I have a connection to them but doesn't mean I want it all. Now, plan to open my own retro toys and video game shop next year. I am buying things myself but also for the shop. Some of the stuff that goes into that shop will be from my personal collection to not clog up the house and go into the store but won't be for sale. I bought some two Lego batman sets for 120 between 06 and 08 but sold them last month for £500, then reinvested that in a he man collection. I won a bid for £22 for 7 figures. I bought a collection of 42 items of someone £36. In it was 10 original he man figures, in very good condition with their weapons, 4 1988 turtles including softhead rocksteady, 2 power rangers, 2 visionaries and 2 ghost busters vintage figures. I was in a charity shop near my a couple months I picked a 1994 kenner large scale batman with his cape in excellent condition for £2 as well as the turtles motorcycle with trashcan side car and lid for £1.75 and a 12 inch Donatello for £2. I also bought a complete MOC Stargate collection from someone for £50, including all 8 figures. That will go into the shop. Love the film but it'll look a great collection in the shop. To me you've got to do everything for the right reasons.

    Another great video Ian.
Some charity shops send stuff to ebay value has to be over £50 so that's probably some explanation why they whack the prices up. Also some employ ebay researchers LOL I know of one charity shop where they exploit people pricing items individually for example toy cars which I find quite disgusting.
But they are aware who's a reseller and who isn't as a lot of the same old faces I see at the car boot I see in the charity shop and also they use market place too.

You tubers have certainly affected prices in charity shops but worse is that they have driven prices down on ebay. I'm seeing so many resellers list items below the lowest priced on ebay and it's dumb. They have many reasons for doing that and I suspect the main one is space. That's something very few people consider when starting a reselling business. Also, we consider a sale within a 3 month period a quick/good sale whilst others think an item is 'Sticky' after its first monthly cycle. They drop the price to get it shifted.
PS Sylvanian is a good line to get into but you have to know the market. Some figures are worth very good money as are some of the building sets, so long as they come with all the tiny bits and being boxed helps.

I feel prices also going up is because less items are being donated, a while ago theyd price to get rid because they always was flooded, but now the items people used to donate they sell on fb or eBay first
