This is a lesson in what NOT to do. New bike, unfamiliar, stock treads, knew it was bad time to ride there, no provisions, no cell phone ??!! people under-estimate their strength and skill to handle things. You are lucky to have gotten out. Yes, I've been there. Hard lesson.

I've seen, both in person and on the internet, what this bike is capable of... Long story short; The only limit of this bike, are the riders skill and experience levels.
People will say this bike is too heavy for hard off-road but everyone keeps forgetting that Honda literally engineers and makes Africa Twin bikes to be capable of riding in all terrains, all climates, all weather and all year round. They literally make Africa Twin bikes to be Paris-Dakar race capable... After all, the sole reason why ''Adventure'' class of motorbikes even exists in the first place, are Yamaha's XT500 and Honda's Africa Twin - and it all started back in 1979-1982 with XT500 and Africa Twin dishing out then unseen performances in Paris-Dakar race. Ever since then, people have been buying these bikes like hotcakes and using them to do round-the-world trips and extreme expeditions...
When you're doing very long, long distance, all terrain, all weather, varying climate trips, whether it's just a long ''point A to point B'' trip or a whole 3 month to 2 year long around-the-world trip, what you want from your bike is, in order:
      1. Reliability,
      2. The ability to fix everything on the bike, everywhere, anytime, all by yourself,
      3. Adaptability aka. All Terrain, All Weather performance,
      4. Comfort.
EVERYTHING ELSE IS IRRELEVANT AND SUBJECTIVE!
And for these 4 things, Honda and Yamaha are still to this day #1... From 1979 to present day! Africa Twin, Tenere 700 and Transalp. These 3 bikes are the benchmark of adventure bikes! Close second place, after these three are the Kawasaki's indestructible KLR650 and Suzuki's V-Strom bikes!

Protection for the bike cheaper than repair. Yes, the AT is heavy (I got the 2018 Standard DCT). DCT is great.....MOST of the time.. Always ride prepared for the conditions and allow extra time to get back. A personal rule of mine is I don't go off-road unless there is another rider. Once you drop the AT a few hours up a mountain road and break four ribs you'll be grateful for the hand to at least help get the bike up and turned around. I rode the bike out but had another rider in case there was an issue. Only "damage" was a scrapped up crash bar......so all in all worked like a champ. Now for crash bars for the body.......LOL...... Great bike and enjoy!
Glad you and the bike came out OK!

This is the quintessential noob Africa Twin, first time off road experience and I'm glad you posted it. I had a similar experience on single track. That beast is such a chore to turn around on single track without laying it down and dragging it around. You definately need some protection for the bike and a bit more gear and prep (water, etc). I'm thinking about creating or finding a small winch like set up (come along or such) to help me if I get stuck alone again.

    I've been there man.
I found the standard Karoo Street tires on my ATAS were garbage off road. They clog up really fast if you're tractoring along. I swapped to some Motoz Tractionator GPS'. It's now a totally different beast off road. Handles deep sand too. It feels counter intuitive but try to carry a bit more momentum over the sand and slush. As soon as you bog down you're sunk.
A lot of people wouldn't be brave enough to show a bad day out. Cool vid. keep it up!

I think that a good policy is to always have a friend with another bike when offroading. The possible scratches on the bike are the least problem, but there are other serious reasons why you should have someone to help you in similar cases. Thank you for the content though and congrats to your braveness

Thanks for sharing this experience. Yes you did thing that maybe you shouldn't have but you have the humility to share it and those of us with even lesser offroad experience can learn. More importantly we see you experience off-roading with a DCT bike, which is a whole 'nother proposition. I am intrigued by this bike as a long distance touring type rider who has *some* interest in mild off-roading and camping. I am not as tall as you are and am older so handling such a bike on a trail is a concern, but as I said not really interested in serious off-roading. This video, strangely enough, further convinced me to take another look at this bike. 👍👍

Reality check on the ATAS, I had The crf1100l and the smallest roads that I was OK with were tractor-roads that was kinda packed or maybe muddy fireroads. Once fitted endurotires to it and damn that was cool, didnt last for very long on the rear. 😅 TC off was the only way to get anywhere.

  • @kalimarus
    @kalimarus 10 місяців тому

I have a 21 ATAS in DCT. Absolutely love it but I learned 25 years ago with my first bike the KLR 650 that a big heavy bike is not meant for certain places. The problem with the AT is it’s actually extremely capable so it will totally lure you places like a devil on your shoulder who already kicked the angel off the other. It’s just completely unforgiving of errors. I actually really like the DCT off-road now that I’m used to it. I reserve riding in places like that for when I’m in a pack on the ATAS as it’s way more fun with 2-3 people to pick up these monsters.

If you want to get a better resistances to water. Then running for an hour 3 times a week is helping. After 2-3 years you will be able to go a little bit farther with out feeling lack of water.
But it is ofc only a second line of defence to actually bringing Water. The sun is no joke.

Also, when he came to an abrupt stop in a wet spot, then sounded surprised that his 500lb bike immediately started sinking. WTF did he think was going to happen? Mo pounds means mo-mentum, my friend.
Disclaimer: I don’t drive any bikes, but I do participate as a passenger on the regular (on an AT), so I’m aware of its size and weight.
What I do drive is a fully kitted Rubicon- on some of the most ass kickingest trails across the country, and what I don’t do is leave the house without water, food, and a satellite beacon.
