I highly recommend these two other Christmas songs by PTX, "O' Come all ye Faithful" and last year's release of "O' Holy Night," you will be blown away!
Totally agree! Two of my favorites! Also, they should watch Kevin, the beatboxer, do “ Kevin’s Fifth” in their 2022 Christmas Extravaganza! He beat boxes and plays the cello at the same time. Absolutely amazing! Gail
At the time they made this, they were in their early years and didn’t have much money. They used what they could and it worked for them. They made Daft Punk in Avi’s kitchen and did it for $400. Using their small budget, talent and perseverance, they made it BIG. Gotta give them credit.
I was just coming in the comments to point his out as well. When they won the Sing -Off, they gained $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony. Two weeks after they all moved to LA to begin their singing careers, Sony pulled the contract stating that a capella would never make it mainstream. The quintet were stuck...so they decided to persevere and began posting videos shot with Mitch's iPad on UA-cam. It took a few months, but they got noticed, gained a following and patrons and eventually Sony realized they may have been a bit wrong, so signed them up with a lesser franchise...madison gate. This meant that there was less money for productions, but at least there was a studio willing to take them on. Expensive sets were out of their budgets, but they at least had a filming crew of a few guys that really did their best to find locations and show them to their best advantage.
So yeah, the initial recording etc. cost $400. They had plans to use an actual studio but that fell through The recording was professionally edited and finished, which I imagine was more than $400.
Pentatonix a "brief" background. They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on UA-cam, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his UA-cam videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on UA-cam), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on UA-cam, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. It is an often debated subject among the Pentaholics as to just how soon we introduce the "Beginners Guide" as we don't want to overdo the introduction. This is a compilation of snips of a whole load of songs which PTX have released. It highlights each member with some of their solos and then a brief history in video. It is quite long - 14+ minutes and is a little dated now (Feb 2020) but is a good watch ua-cam.com/video/lDxIfwfCmQE/v-deo.html&pp=ygUdYmVnaW5uZXJzIGd1aWRlIHRvIHBlbnRhdG9uaXg%3D. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording. Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have Grammy wins for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Another nomination for Holidays Around the World album in the 2024 list! Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. They married 22/04/24! Not clear how the future is to follow, but Kirstie has announced that she is expecting number 2 in early 2025. Not critical to the groups touring schedule, but Scott, Kevin and Matt are all married. Kevin and Matt with children. They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star! They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage. 4. It is "Pentatonix" there is no "The".
Well, Kevin IS THE BEATBOXER and that is his main job with them as the others do not have his skills therefore he doesn’t get to sing, forefront, as much as the others. Not to mention the fact that he did not come into the group as a singer and was taught by the others to do so. It’s not that they don’t want him to sing. He has sung on numerous occasions. Amazing Grace, Imagine, Mary Did You Know to name a few. Enjoyed your reaction guys.
Watching Corey react to music he likes gives me life. And then to find out he doesn't like the original song? He's just appreciating the talent and production. Great reaction.
The trio of Scott, Mitch and Kirstin knew one another as kids, but they formed Pentatonix when Scott suggested they audition for The Sing Off in 2011, which, yes, they won. It was then that they added Kevin who they saw on UA-cam playing cello and beatboxing at the same time ("Cello-boxing"), and Avi (their bass until 2017). They only had one day of rehearsals prior to their audition because Kevin was finishing up his Pre Med degree at Yale and didn't agree to join the group until after he finished that. He was planning to be a surgeon, and he's so intelligent and compassionate, I bet he would have been an amazing one, but 13 years later he's still singing and beatboxing and celloboxing for us, and I am so grateful. I have been enjoying you discovering and appreciating PTX!
They also were on The Masked Singer last year! Their performances are on UA-cam. They do flourish with Christmas and there's a lot to see. Only one member has left the group since 2011, and they all love to perform live!
You should check out their version of Carol of The Bells and O Holy Night! If you get a chance to see them live, take it! They are just as good live, if not better! You will not be disappointed whether it is on a Summer tour or Holiday tour.
Kevin also has cameo's of him singing as well as beatboxing in Mary Did You Know, "Sing" (original), Live version Kiss From a Rose. just at the top of my mind. They let him shine with his Cello and other things don't worry he gets star power time plenty of times. PTX spreads the wealth more than ALL others imo.
The 3 main singers met as Children doing musical theater , a now defunct program in Texas for children. Mitch n Kirstin were 8 when they met, Mitch and Scott met when they were 10 and all 3 went to the same high school at 14. So, years of performing together. To qualify for The Singoff which neefedat least 5 performers, they found Kevin the beat boxer beat boxing and playing the Cello in a viral video on the net. Avi Kaplan the first base was recommended by a friend
The song was written in 1941 and popularized by Bing Crosby. First recorded by the Trapp Family Singers (yes the Sound of Music Trapps) in 1951. Also, they couldn't afford snow.😃
I think it's kind of appropriate that PTX was singing a song about someone who didn't have much in the way of riches, but did the best he could with what he had; when they recorded this song and video, they were also in a pretty tight budget crunch, since the recording contract they won from The Sing-Off was canceled almost as soon as they moved to CA (bad move, Sony!), and so they were working hard with what they had (their own vocal talents) to make an impression on people.
I'm all about Home Free's version of "Do You Hear What I Hear?" - a song that is actually not about Christmas. "Many people mistakenly assume this Christmas classic has been around for years and that it is of European origin. But it was written in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis as a powerful plea for peace by a man who had experienced the horrors of war." (That man was French-born Noel Regney, who was drafted into the German Army against his will when France fell to Germany.) “I am amazed that people can think they know the song and not know it is a prayer for peace, ” Noel Regney once told an interviewer. “But we are so bombarded by sounds and our attention spans are so short.”
Definitely need to watch Oh Come All Ye Faithful - and just an aside - it rarely snows in Jerusalem!! They won the SingOff in 2011 - their performances are here on You Tube. The only person who has changed is the bass. There are numerous live videos on You Tube of their concert performances. They are amazing live.
Years of ptx content ❤ been watching since sing off days. You guys should do a video of one of their most recent songs and pick one of the performances from the sing off. You can see them at the start and where they are now 😁
This video is from their early years when they had no money. Now they are doing world tours. Last week they sold out Madison Square Garden. 4 of the 5 singers have been with PTX since the beginning. The bass , Avi, left in 2017 and the current bass, Matt (whom you haven’t seen yet), took over. Recommend their recent video of their original, Please Santa Please.
Great Reaction! If there is a song you don't like, and PTX does a cover of it, chances are you'll like their version. I hated Cheerleader but when PTX did a cover of it ...wow! And you have to do, Oh Come All Ye Faithful. Thay made it their own!! Hey, thanks guys. Did a good job! Merry Christmas!
They were still early in their career n did not have much money. This was their first Christmas sing nugget were not even sure their fans would like it. A Christmas album was the furthest from their minds.
Check out their cover of John Lennon's song Imagine. It is incredible, done with such reverence to the meaning of the song. Also, the beatboxer sings in it as well with a segment of his own.
This song always hits me hard, because I grew up watching the animated/claymation Christmas special by the same name. They took it off the air, because people were offended (what else is new these days) by the bad Arab portrayal. As someone who grew up watching it every year, I only saw it as some bad men who enslaved the drummer boy. I never once saw it as Arab men who were the bad men -- just some bad men in general who took advantage of the poor boy to make them money. The story was so sad, yet so beautiful. When the little drummer boy played for the newborn Jesus, it was one of the most beautiful moments I ever experienced while watching television. That memory has made this song a special listen for me.
Please check out "Do You See What I See" by Home Free also, another acapella bend (country-based, but can take any song or genre and make it their own). Arrangement by their beatboxer. Excellent.
I believe this was very early in their career after the record label dropped them. So budgets were very limited. Also being early Kevin was not comfortable singing, he worked with Avi to become the vocalist he is now.
Home Free: How Great Thou Art Thank me later! Shot in the Austrian Alps. Home Free and PTX love the reactors- they’ve even given them free tickets and backstage VIP passes! Ask “ That Singer”!
Okay, have you guys checked out Chris Stapleton covering the song, " It's A Man's World," His own song, " Sometimes I Cry" Also check out Leo Sayer's song," When I Need You" Robert John's song, "Sad Eyes " I hope you have or if you haven't you will look at these songs. Oh, Dr. Hook song, " Sharing The Night Together "
They are not in a fancy studio because this video was made back when they were starting out and they didn't have a recording contract. They were making these videos on their own and didn't have a lot of money to spend. They won the acappella competition show "The Sing-Off" in 2011 and part of the prize was a recording contract with Sony, but Sony soon cancelled their contract because they didn't think an acappella group could sell albums. Man, were they wrong. They became very popular online and when they won a Grammy award for arrangement for their 2013 release of "Daft Punk Medley," Sony picked them back up under their premiere label, RCA records. The rest is history. The only personnel change in the group came in 2017 when Avi Kaplan, their bass singer, left the group for personal reasons. He was replaced by Matt Sallee officially when their contract was renewed in early 2018, although Matt toured with them the last three months of 2017.
You should react to Erik Grönvall The House of the rising sun. It's a banger. He's doing covers to Celine Dion, Whitney Huston, Iron Maiden + alot more. His voice is awsome.
PTX are the greatest acapella group on the planet. Welcome to the wonderful world of Pentatonix. 🤩 As it is Christmas time, here is another favorite of mine. "Mary, Did You Know?" ua-cam.com/video/ifCWN5pJGIE/v-deo.html
Well said Corey. Beat boxing is Kevin's thing. It's nice when he adds to it. Fenom, check out VoicePlay. They are not biting it. Check out their latest dozen songs. Thanks Ya'll.
This is one of two of my favorite Little Drummer Boy covers. My other favorite cover is by a Christian group called "for King and Country" ua-cam.com/video/D5zBF-zPXpU/v-deo.html
also they were budgeting and just starting off when they made this so no special effects for a reason. not everyone is crazy rich when they begin their career.
Lol okay Noggie...Obviously you didn't listen. Not one of us said we didn't like this PTX version. They actually made us like the song by their performance.
How fitting for Kevin to sing, shall I play for you..., since he is the drummer boy
I highly recommend these two other Christmas songs by PTX, "O' Come all ye Faithful" and last year's release of "O' Holy Night," you will be blown away!
I second both of those!!
Ditto
Totally agree! Two of my favorites! Also, they should watch Kevin, the beatboxer, do “ Kevin’s Fifth” in their 2022 Christmas Extravaganza! He beat boxes and plays the cello at the same time. Absolutely amazing! Gail

Pentatonix a "brief" background.

Bro carried the beat. He was the drummer, no doubt about it! These folks gave me chills! 🫶🏽
Have you guys reacted to O come all ye faithful? It’s an epic cover, one of my favorite PTX Christmas songs and I think they have hundreds. lol

Definitely an awesome version!

Actually he sang in an capella group at Yale. But certainly he benefited from working with his bandmates after joining the group.
Mary did you know by Pentatonix is a must Christmas play. Seasons greetings from Barbados!
These acapella groups like Pentatonix and Home Free never fail to amaze me! 😮❤❤❤❤
Watching Corey react to music he likes gives me life. And then to find out he doesn't like the original song? He's just appreciating the talent and production. Great reaction.

If you want to have your mind blown listen to to their version of "The Prayer"
Its stunning. its their Christmas song.

You must do Mary Did You Know by Pentatonix. It is so beautiful.
This was dope!
That’s all I can say!🎶🙏🏻🎶🙏🏻

My favorite version!!! Love them! This is towards the beginning for this group! Beautiful!
Dance of the sugar plum fairy won them a Grammy❤
As did their medley of Daft Punk, and their collab with Dolly Parton on Jolene.
This is a great version ❤
You could react to their live performances. Also, they won a Grammy for a song that was done in on a very tight budget in their apartment.
This song was recorded during their no money phase.
Kevin the beatboxer is fantastic - love him! 🥰
This is Awesome! 2 great versions of the Little Drummer Boy are by Bob Segar and David Bowie and Bing Crosby who put a twist on it!
They sound even better live!
I'm all about Home Free's version of "Do You Hear What I Hear?" - a song that is actually not about Christmas.
"Many people mistakenly assume this Christmas classic has been around for years and that it is of European origin. But it was written in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis as a powerful plea for peace by a man who had experienced the horrors of war." (That man was French-born Noel Regney, who was drafted into the German Army against his will when France fell to Germany.)
“I am amazed that people can think they know the song and not know it is a prayer for peace, ” Noel Regney once told an interviewer. “But we are so bombarded by sounds and our attention spans are so short.”
Corey it was a joy watching you watch it & react
Thank you so much. I am a absolute Pentaholic. You are appreciated. Greetings from South Africa
Kevin has a phenomenal voice. Check out "Mary Did You Know" as well as Amazing Grace!
If you want snow, check out their “The Prayer”
Years of ptx content ❤ been watching since sing off days. You guys should do a video of one of their most recent songs and pick one of the performances from the sing off. You can see them at the start and where they are now 😁
They win The Sing Off. So did Home Free in a later season. Only acapella groups! All seasons are on YT.
React to their Oh holy night, O come all ye faithful and the prayer , amazing grace music videos ❤️
Kevin rules in this one!!! Love Kirstie's power voice. Ya not my fav as far as a song but they do it soooooo well.
They won the Sing Off in the 3rd season & Home Free won over Voice Play in the 4th season. 😊
Oh my....😇🙏♥️
TEENA MARIE - IT MUST BE MAGIC
I love this group!!! ❤❤
Please check out their version of " The First Noel ".
How did these people find each other.🎉😊
Please check out "Do You See What I See" by Home Free also, another acapella bend (country-based, but can take any song or genre and make it their own). Arrangement by their beatboxer. Excellent.
Bing and David’s version is still my #1😊
I love ptx. You should listen to naturally 7 if you like them. 7 brothers who sing only with their voices
I believe this was very early in their career after the record label dropped them. So budgets were very limited. Also being early Kevin was not comfortable singing, he worked with Avi to become the vocalist he is now.
Yall should listen to Bob Segers version of the Drummer Boy🔥
Corey watching The Fly in the background, lol.
❤ PTX ❤
Home Free: How Great Thou Art
Thank me later! Shot in the Austrian Alps.
Home Free and PTX love the reactors- they’ve even given them free tickets and backstage VIP passes! Ask “ That Singer”!
My favorite Drummer Boy version will always be the Dandy Warhols.
Bob Segar has the best " Little Drummer Boy" ever. Bar none, there, I said it.
Okay, have you guys checked out Chris Stapleton covering the song, " It's A Man's World," His own song, " Sometimes I Cry"
Also check out Leo Sayer's song," When I Need You"
Robert John's song, "Sad Eyes "
I hope you have or if you haven't you will look at these songs. Oh, Dr. Hook song, " Sharing The Night Together "
Christmas is Australia has NO snow !!!! 😆😆😆
Id love to see youz guyz react to Oh come all ye faithful...
Especially if you liked their take on this...
It was early in their career and they didn't have the money to finance a fancy video. The singing is enough for me.
Please do “Oh Holy Night”. It’s amazing!
Please do Mary did you know? by them. Beautiful!
I would suggest Home Free Do You Hear What I Hear. Excellent
This song and 12 days of Xmas were my least favorite Christmas songs but I really love Pentatonix versions of those two songs
You should react to Erik Grönvall The House of the rising sun. It's a banger. He's doing covers to Celine Dion, Whitney Huston, Iron Maiden + alot more. His voice is awsome.
Please do oh holy night pentatonix latest version
Fellas Bob Segar’s version of this song is so very good.
Mary, do you know: black dude sing and its holiday music
Except that Israel is desert environment. Bethlehem is desert. No Snow Bro!!
I believe Kevin in the beginning didn’t really feel comfortable singing most of the time and he’s so critical to the beat.
Well said Corey. Beat boxing is Kevin's thing. It's nice when he adds to it. Fenom, check out VoicePlay. They are not biting it. Check out their latest dozen songs. Thanks Ya'll.
Do we Californians deserve Christmas too? 🤣😂🤣
LMAO...Yes you do! Sorry for being snow elitist!
PTX has only lost one member, their Bass, Avi Kaplan left in 2017 and was replaced by Matt Salle.
This is one of two of my favorite Little Drummer Boy covers. My other favorite cover is by a Christian group called "for King and Country" ua-cam.com/video/D5zBF-zPXpU/v-deo.html
Merry Christmas ! Keep up the great work you do and rock on but not this song ! 😎🤟
Now try Bob Seger's version!
The “newer” bass Matt Sallee is great, different sound to his voice but equally as talented as Avi.
also they were budgeting and just starting off when they made this so no special effects for a reason. not everyone is crazy rich when they begin their career.
he’s a beatboxer… so his job is to beatbox. don’t get me wrong he’s an amazing singer but that’s not his specialty.
Pentatonix, while capable singers, autotune or otherwise manipulate their performances. They should be disregarded like any other fake.
So disappointed with this reaction!! They know nothing about this group. Also they put down the song! So disrespectful.
Lol okay Noggie...Obviously you didn't listen. Not one of us said we didn't like this PTX version. They actually made us like the song by their performance.
I would say we're sorry it doesn't snow in San Diego , but we're not. It'll be around 70 here on Christmas.
They did the Sound Of Silence with their not-so-newest member Matt please check it out ua-cam.com/video/gdVjVtpr55M/v-deo.htmlsi=ODCmoDowjjvmZKYm
