I think it would be a great idea to have the arranger show the list of tracks in each section, maybe in a drop down or by expanding it. Then you can create duplicate versions of that section and mute and unmute tracks in each version.
the deselect is there already. check the track info menu on the left. there is a box that says exclude from arranger. Also, i think best use of this is to build broad sections, like instrumentation and backing vox. and then you can go in and finish things off with lead vocals, and embellishments. I see it as a workflow tool, something to speed up the monotonous parts of production. EDIT: I just checked, it's in the tracks properties pane on the left, right near the top, exclude arranger.
But Im not sure that will work PER arranger section? You cannot tell the exclude arranger to exclude per different section? Its all or nothing? A more recent comment I added above might be another way of ALT THINKING around it?
Well explained and demoed, Mike. This is a really, really useful feature that will save me so much time. Instead of the previous tedious cutting and pasting, the arranger track will almost automate that for me.
Very nice feature. And well done... I am more used to Reaper where there is something similar, but the more I discover Cakewalk, the more I realise that what I love in Reaper come from Cakewalk....
Thank Mike, exactly what I was looking for. I figured out an easier way to arrange without using the left hand column. after you "create sections from markers", highlight a section by pressing the coloured header, then hold Ctrl & grab the coloured header, you can copy that whole section to a different part. easy peasy ;)
Mike, I'm following your Cakewalk tutorial since a few weeks and...man...I love the way you explain everything so clearly! I'm using Cakewalk since the lockdown due to the Coronavirus, it's a great software even if compared with Cubase, Logic, etc., and with the help of your precious tutorials I am learning to use it better and better every week. Thanks a lot! :-D
Hi Mike, I hope Bandlab is paying you for these great Video's very helpful... I love the fact that they are adding these new features but I do wish they would fix a couple of the other annoying glitches that they have .. thanks. I lost a couple of changes etc that took hours and even with the back up copy that they have still could not recover.
I finally came across a project to use the Arranger Track. Very fantastic video. What's really nice is that when you finally "commit" to an arrangement, it automatically inserts cross fades on every track at every splice point. What a time saver that is!!
Hi Mike... i am watching all your videos even i use cakewalk since 1993... since it was in apprentice and professional versions on windows 3.1... And everytime i discover something new... I need to ask you... which DAW is the best one for you?

I have been doing music for over 25 years and I loved this video. I have been using Sonar from their start. Great Video again and I hope that cake walk takes your advice. I just went to each track and muted areas in just that track.
Great video! - Just a few things you may not be aware of: - If you're doing a bunch of section edits and you don't want the sections to include your events, un-check "Select Events with Sections" in the Track View "Options" menu. - To exclude a track from the arranger, go to Track properties tab in the inspector and check the "Arranger Exclude" checkbox. Unfortunately you can't do this at a section by section basis though. - For clips that have lead ins... When the arrangement has been committed, the clips that have been copied have actually been copied in full, and have just been cropped to the size of the section. If you find that vocals etc have been cut off, you can extend the crop out to the left to include the missing audio.
Great, helpful tips! Thanks! The second one I was actually wondering about already. The first one, just to be sure I get it, you mean if you are editing ONE instance of an arranger section (in this videos case, say it was the second verse which is just a copy of the first) and make changes you do that? Third tip is also fantastic to know! Nice of you to share these!
@@shader26 When "Select Events with Sections" is turned off, all it means is you can move the sections about without changing any of your events. You would use this when you are first marking out your sections, or you want to make corrections to the section placement - i.e. you just want to change the sections themselves and not move any events. BTW - this is now a toggle button in the "Select" control bar module to make it easier... just set the "Select" module size to large. As an addendum to the third tip... as of Cakewalk 2021.01, there is now an "Arranger Section Event Overlap Threshold". If you set this to say 1/16 note, then any MIDI notes that overlap the beginning or end of a section that are less than a 1/16th note will automatically be seen as part of the section and moved/copied/deleted along with it. This is useful when dealing with unquantized MIDI parts (e.g. piano, hi-hats), or synth pads that are played slightly early due to them having a slow attack.
Cool feature. I'll make sure to try it out. Question of the day: will we ever get unstuck after so many times? Should we call for rescue? ;) Have a nice weekend and thanks for your vids.
You're VERY COOL MAN!!! This is a VERY useful and COOL Feature, especially auto-copy-paste!!)) I watch your videos and am HAPPY! I'm going to try NOW:)))'
Thank you for this video. I would like to ask if the different sections of the organizing section, eg intro, poem, corus, end, could be assigned to the PC keyboard? For example, intro: the key, verse B key, Corus C key, end D key. I would like to sing on a musical basis by dividing the song with a marker, for example, into four parts and starting the different sections from the keyboard. For example: intro, poem, corus, end.
Never apologize for wasting 27 seconds of my life again. I can't think of a better way to waste 27 seconds of my life then listen to some corny music by you.😊
Great walk through Mike. I have been trying this out myself for the last few days. I'm pretty impressed with it overall. I agree that having the ability to include or exclude various instruments would be a great additional option. Through doing some additional testing I have realised that once you "Commit Arrangement to Project" it slices up the tracks into individual sections that you can easily mute or un-mute, using the K key, to have those instruments playing or not. This gives ability to do what you were discussing in the video afterwards. To have this feature in Cakewalk is a great thing though and it's a credit to the development guys that we are still getting additional features added to a "Free" product. Keep up the great Cakewalk content and help spread the word on how capable a DAW it is to a wider audience.
Great vid as always Mike. I don't so different versions of my songs as I pitch to publishers with the aim of getting a cut so I would most likely use this as you suggested as a great way to see your markers. I wonder if you can loop a section. Handy for practicing a guitar solo etc.
Great Feature. I'll definately be using this, I already used it on one of my new tunes. The big downside is that, yes, at some point you have to commit, the live audio parts do have a lot of dynamics (as you suggested on the pre-roll) and that creates issues all over the place -- That SAID as a way to organize your song structure "bones", I got to say, it's pretty DARN cool! Two thumbs up for what it does. thanks for the run through, it was spot on. it would be interesting to see the done with Audio, but I suppose as long as you don't overlap (as you mentioned) it should be fine, no variation however because he guitar track (for example) would have to be exactly the same unless you created individual blocks with different guitar audio. Another thought is that you could finish the arrangement, save it down then add all the live audio. Sounds like a Steely Dan dream eh?
Excellent feature overview! This is an awesome fast track feature for song writers. You've inspired me to invest the time into learning this tool and add it to my workflow. Thank you for your Cakewalk tutorials! 🎵👍
I notice that your arrangements don't "glitch"; there's a smooth transition. When I do it, there is a noticeable "glitch". What am I doing wrong? Some have said that it will until I commit. I would like to hear what my different arrangements sound like BEFORE I commit. Let's say I have an intro that starts at 2.01.000 to 5.04.119 and verse starts at 6.01.000 thru 13.04.119; when I arrange, say intro, verse, intro, when I play that arrangement, there is a noticeable "glitch" (for lack of a better word) transitioning from one to the other. Please advise. Oh, and I use 120 TPQ and 20 FPS ndf.
3:48. Dude... if you think that's garbage you must so DUMB LOL (no offense though im jk) I really like the way that sounds I won't lie. I can barely make songs as good as you bit there's something called trying but i like your compostiion.
I scrolled down to see if anyone had ask/answered this same question before asking myself. I guess I'll have to try it and find out myself! LOL! I do acappella music!
Hi, I' m following your great cakewalk vids here on youtube, great work. Can you please make a video how to save a workspace with console (screensets) active and browser closed, and here is my problem, the browser don' t stay closed when I come back to (screenset 1). I mention that I have the latest Version of Cakewalk 2020.04 (Build 179 ,64) The other saved numbers 2 to 10 work great in the screenset, the only problem is nr,1. and also, I set the modules in console and when I reopen the project the console set don' t remain as I set it previosly. If you can read this, and make a video to show this things I thank you very much in advance! Have a nice day.
re- your single "I wanna see" observation: How about if you want "instances" of sections with certain tracks muted, etc. that you do it after "committing to arrangement" ? Automationing (?) of whatever you want to create variances between sections?
I was fascinated by this, and will use it. However, I was hoping that you would be doing something about using an arranger keyboard with Cakewalk. What I do is do a quick midi record on the PA4X, dump that on a stick, then load it into the computer for editing. It plays back just fine through the keyboard using midi, but going the other way - well, I haven't found the settings yet.
Hi Mike. Hope you read this. I'm wondering when you will have another Q and A? I'm making great progress in some areas. Your vids are super helpful, for the most part, but there are a few things which I have't seen you cover, which are driving me a bit crazy. And there are a couple of habits you have in your videos, which make me yell at the screen. LOLOL I figure if I'm having these issues, others will be too. Let me know if you have a Q and A planned and I'll make a list of the top 3 or 4 issues, so we can all benefit. Thanks, brother. I'd have uninstalled Cakewalk by now, if it hadn't been for you. - Jstn
For recording I always liked Cakewalk, but for arranging and sequencing I'm still waiting for them to go a more standardised route of which I'm used to. But this looks pretty nice for testing things out.
Gday Mike. Great videos. I have learnt a lot. I came across this other vid on arranger -ua-cam.com/video/cQqy65pVywU/v-deo.html - . Does a lto of copying and pasting individual parts on individual tracks (if I understood it correctly}. Secondly, have you done a vid on purpose and use of Markers? Cheers
Cakewalk has to be upgraded. 2.0 1) we want it to have its own pitch-correction plugin. 2) we want instruments with more sound banks. 3) the audio editor has to allow us to "denoise" the recorded or the imported samples.
I have a question for you, is there a way to select a track and minimize the other tracks in Studio one like the feature cakewalk has? I Iove that feature.
Great video...thanks. Since cutting and pasting and rearranging is a disaster for me. This feature is huge! It helps me to organize my bigger projects.
Hello Mike. Thanks for sharing this. After this tutorial I created an arranger track with sections for intro, verses etc. I have then added a piano track and and strings. Both midi. I am having a problem that If I move any clips or delete them it is affecting the arranger track but splitting cutting or deleting parts of the arranger track. I ant to edit the clips only without it affecting the arranger track. Would appreciate if you could help. I am pulling my hair out after hours of trying to arrange my clips. All I am achieving is screwing up my arranger track.
So we can use this feature for live performance? I use DAW when I perform with my band, so let say I would like to repeat the chorus, but I only 1 chorus section in the box.
I love Markers! They make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside! :) I def like this feature and will begin to use it from now on! I feel even more warm and fuzzy inside than I did using Markers! :)
Fantastic demonstration of this long-overdue feature, Mike. I've been clamoring for this for over 20 years. Finally, I can experiment with song structure ideas without the creativity-destroying _tedium_ of copy/paste, select, delete, undo, redo, yada yada, over and over and over. At 9:00 I was bracing myself when the play-head approached the end of the Chorus, fearing there'd be a noticeable gap in playback when it jumped back to the Verse. But NO, it was SEAMLESS (9:10). Wonderful! They've essentially combined the Track View with the Matrix View! But yeah, at 14:30 you mention the _exact_ thing I hoped you would: lead-in vocals (or lead-in instrumental phrases). If they can crack that issue, that's going to make the arrangement-experimenting / auditioning experience SO much better. Cheers!
Very useful and as always Mike you have produced a clear video easy to follow and nicely paced - I was working on a test piece I had produced for learning and the arranger option came up for some reason - looked useful and now I should be able to shunt sections around into order.
For a song writer this is an absolute game-time changer one thing i missed Ive made three arrangemants and i cant for the life of me recall them only the last one ( i have exported them but i´d like to see them in my project ) , i `m sure its simple but i cant figure it out any solutions out there ?
Hi Mike. Excellent timing with your video. Thanks for posting this. As chance would have it I am just finishing a song which I have done in Cakewalk and which has taken me two months of work. I just noticed a few days back that there was an update and when I saw there was an arranger track I was very surprised. That is quite a very big feature to be added to what is essentially free software. Ok I am going to watch the video now. Very interested in this one because I have not used an Arranger track before but I know there is one in Studio One which I do not have.
As a follow up to my first comment. I have just watched the video. Very interesting. It reminds me somewhat of Blocks in Reason at least on the top of the Track view. I am not too worried about the singing aspect of this as I usually lay down vocals last. The arrangements would be finished by that stage. However I agree with you on the second point that you should be able to take tracks out of a song section. That would be more versatile.
Thanks for another brilliant tutorial! One thought: Since the Arranger Track completely shatters the need for linear continuity in the normal track view, I believe it will result in more interesting musical choices if musicians actually DO copy/paste sections in track view for use in non-linear ways all to be used as arranger sections later. The musical usefulness of this is that you can go well beyond just muting/unmuting tracks and, instead, edit any parameters of each section to avoid boring, repetitive arrangements. Making that kind of varied arrangement in the traditional track view has always been a bit of a pain for me since I then need to move the rest of the song sections around, sometimes problematically. This Arranger Track allows me to mostly ignore where I place sections in the traditional view, giving me immense flexibility in making a more interesting arrangement with varied sections. It's just strange to break out of the expectation of what a song should "look like" in the traditional Track view. Edited to add: The arranger does not always make large jumps smoothly in large, complicated tracks. In fact, it comes to a full pause for some jumps, which is unfortunate. Still, I find it very useful for arranging. I can move sections in the sections window which moves them in the track view, but I prefer to keep my source file non-linear, then save my preferred arrangements as new Cakewalk documents where I can then commit to specific arrangements and polish them off around the edges in the traditional track view.
As always a very good tutorial, i've been recording for years the good old fashioned way with amps, 16 track recorder etc. and was always reluctant to switch over to computer. However, having subscribed to your channel i was convinced to download the Bandlab/Cakewalk software and "have a go" i must admit i find it all fascinating. I'm not at the midi stage just yet but just playing around with the software importing previously recorded tracks then adding the salt 'n' pepper with Cakewalk. I'd just like to say a big thank you for the tutorials without which i would have just given up and not had a clue...
Another day, two new functions learned, this program is getting better and better and very cool videos as always! This is something im gonna use, perfect testing out what parts to use, order and perhaps remixes and alternativ versions.
Is there away to start the transport at any point on the timeline? For example I have an arrangement called "Solo Placement 1". I do not want to start at the intro for evaluation, I want to start at the end of the bridge into the solo section for eval. Question is so I don't have to listen to the whole section to get to hear the next section come in for eval. With my "Intro" section first, if I put my transport later in the song when I press "play" in the arranger section it starts at intro. I wanted to start at a specific place in the song. I could make the first section "bridge, then solo, but that means reconstructing a new arrangement just to evaluate a small transition in the current arrangement! Remember there are no DUMB QUESTIONS! Thank you!
Update: I ran a very complicated Arrangement with roughly 10 sections, and some of them used multiple times in different spots. The commit did not go well. It actually left out full parts (like inserted the bass track but no drums or keyboard) for some of the arrangement blocks. I'm trying to figure out what happened now. BTW, it played FINE before commit just running the arrangement...Humm -- Wacked. I did the commit, same thing. then I did a ctrl-Z (undo) and it fixed note so they started RIGHT on the first beat (not before by any amount) and it worked, sort of, I when to look at the arrangement and it was all messed up, so the ctrl-Z didn't undo it properly. so I'm going back to my save, fix the "chunks" to start right on the money and then try the commtt again.
Cakewalk just keeps getting better and better. This is going to be a huge benefit for me.
I think it would be a great idea to have the arranger show the list of tracks in each section, maybe in a drop down or by expanding it. Then you can create duplicate versions of that section and mute and unmute tracks in each version.

I figure if I'm having these issues, others will be too. Let me know if you have a Q and A planned and I'll make a list of the top 3 or 4 issues, so we can all benefit. Thanks, brother. I'd have uninstalled Cakewalk by now, if it hadn't been for you. - Jstn
Very nice video, Mike. You explained it and demonstrated it well. I will use this feature daily. Thanks!.
Cheers
Very helpful video! definitely going to make use of this feature.
Cakewalk has to be upgraded.
2.0
1) we want it to have its own pitch-correction plugin.
2) we want instruments with more sound banks.
3) the audio editor has to allow us to "denoise" the recorded or the imported samples.
I was about to start a project where I'd need to split and copy and paste and all that crazy confusing stuff. Now I don't have to! This is great!
Awesome!
Thank you. Nice feature ! I will use it for varying my "hear and play" congas training sequences !
Cheers!
I just learned about this feature and I'm definitely going to use it. I've started already. Thanks for this video.
Great video again Mike - especially the dad dancing ;-)
This is a game changer for me! Thank you, Mike. Is it possible to select all notes in a track on the same key?
Very useful and as always Mike you have produced a clear video easy to follow and nicely paced - I was working on a test piece I had produced for learning and the arranger option came up for some reason - looked useful and now I should be able to shunt sections around into order.
For a song writer this is an absolute game-time changer one thing i missed Ive made three arrangemants and i cant for the life of me recall them only the last one ( i have exported them but i´d like to see them in my project ) , i `m sure its simple but i cant figure it out any solutions out there ?
was hoping it would be more like reason's blocks, but thats cool enuff
I would imagine you chose midi tracks as it would be easier. Would I be correct?
Nice new feature, and you explained very well. Just I do not arrange my songs in a way that will take advantage of this feature.
Question, If we change to another section before the present section ends will it go straight away or will it wait until the section is complete?
Fantastic tutorial, I will be using the Arranger from now on, thanks
is there a way to get audio guide as it is in e.g. Ableton? I mean voice telling you "chorus", "verse" etc.
Really cool video. Mike short question does it work with audio track or only in MIDI mode
Thanks for all the video's! Keep up the great work mate!
Hey Steve. Nice to hear from you. It’s probably more useful in the early stages in my opinion, but have fun with it!
powerful feature - thankyou for explaining
Would you recommend Cake walk for live gigs ?
You worried about eh music ruining your reputation then you start dancing like a nutter. lol
Can cakewalk be used to live performance like ableton live?
What? I liked your tune. Thanks for all your help.
That would be more versatile.
you can..watch this around 1:17 for a few minutes ua-cam.com/video/nvrW9UrzFpk/v-deo.html&feature=em-lbcastemail
Very good video Mike, all clearly explained. Thank you
Very useful! Thanks from Lima, Peru.
Great. Will use this feature. Thank you!!!
Excellent video. Cakewalk Rocks!
tried this and when exported arranger as audio parts of tracks missing
pls can you tell me the name of the vst drum kit you used.thanks
downloaded cakewalk a week ago because of your videos. thank you so much. I have subbed
Thanks man!
That's exactly what I needed. Thanks Mike!
Another day, two new functions learned, this program is getting better and better and very cool videos as always! This is something im gonna use, perfect testing out what parts to use, order and perhaps remixes and alternativ versions.
This fits really well into how I write songs. I will use this before laying down vocals
Thank you!
Great video. Very useful tool and you are a great dancer too...
Thanks for the step-by-step breakdown of the getting started process complete with helpful tips.
Hi mike can you please do some tutorial for izotope ozone 9?
