  • With limited time for trekking in Nepal, my friends and I decided to do the 4-day Poon Hill trek from Pokhara. We hoped to get a taste of the Himalayas, see some incredible views, and visit some of the smaller, Nepali villages. On Day 1, we were transported by van from Pokhara to Nayapul where we officially started the trek. We hiked for about 6 hours and stayed the night in Ulleri. On Day 2, we hiked to a village called Ghorepani which ended up being my favorite night of the trek. The teahouse we stayed at was comfortable, the food was delicious, and the views of the mountains were insane. The following morning, we started trekking around 4:15 am and arrived at Poon Hill for sunset. We continued hiking for the rest of the day and spent the night of day 3 in Ghandruk. On day 4, we hiked for about 2 more hours before getting a Jeep back to Pokhara.
In the end, it was an amazing experience and one of the highlights of my time in Nepal! I can't wait to return and hopefully take on a longer, more challenging trek next time.

I did that trek and more a few years ago at 70. It was tough but I prepared well. I still have it the whole trek stored. 2000 vertical meters and 18 kms in a day up to Ghorepani. it was magiificant.

Poon hill is wonderful. There are also fabulous views if you trek back via the route to Ghandruk or to Khopra Danda which many consider a superior view point.

I think U missed 1 things while you have gone to height of the poonhill. You guys could have waited another hour or so, to see planes flying below you. Planes fly by the sides(ally)of those mountains and it makes feels like you are really at the top. I had that experience and i was so excited when couple of planes were flying underneath that top. Oh man that was amazing.

When it comes to the equipment needed for the Poon Hill trek, there are a few essential items to consider. Here's a list of recommended equipment:
1.Hiking boots: Sturdy, comfortable hiking boots with good ankle support are crucial for the trek.
2.Clothing layers: Dressing in layers is important to adapt to changing temperatures. Pack lightweight, moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and a waterproof outer shell.
3.Trekking pants: Opt for lightweight, quick-drying pants that offer freedom of movement.
4.Insulated jacket: Carry a warm, insulated jacket to combat the colder temperatures at higher altitudes.
5.Sleeping bag: A four-season sleeping bag is necessary to stay warm during cold nights in the mountains.
6.Backpack: Choose a comfortable backpack with enough capacity to carry your essentials, including water, snacks, extra clothing, and personal items.
6.Trekking poles: Recommended for added stability and support, especially during steep ascents and descents.
7.Headlamp: Essential for early morning or late evening hikes, as well as in case of power outages in tea houses.
8.Sun protection: Pack a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to shield yourself from the strong sunlight at higher altitudes.
9.First aid kit: Carry a basic first aid kit containing essential items like bandages, antiseptic cream, painkillers, and any personal medications.
Remember to pack light and only bring the essentials to minimize the weight you carry.

Poonhill is outdated. You gotta try newer, more exciting and less crowded trails like Mardi Himal, kori trek and Korchan dada (Great Machhapuchhre trek) to see the himalayas up more close and understand the hardship of highlanders.
