  • Dutch tourist's films from 2009 and 2013 combined. Christchurch and New Zealand deserve support from their allies, Europe, United Kingdom and the USA. As your men fought for us we have to fight for you. Rebuild with extra garden and less tarmac please!!

Thankyou for compiling these videos...don't want to be insenstive, but thank god we lost the green BNZ building on the cnr of Colombo and Hereford - it was pulled down well after the shakes.

That was hard to watch. I went back recently and its nice to see it slowly coming alive again esp along Oxford Terrace. Long live Christchurch

Very good. I was in NZ in 1997 with a brand new digital video camera, filming everything that moved (as you did), and I went up the Cathedral tower whilst my wife sat in the square. I’ve searched all my footage but can’t find any from up the tower, and I’m sure I would have filmed it. Can’t find any.
So I’m very grateful you managed to preserve it 😮

Excellent video, you show the life and happiness, vibrancy of 2009 and now the somnabulistic death throes of 2013. Although its changing now, most of the fences are gone and new buildings are going up. The Cathedral should be sorted out in a few months.

Sadly, thanks to the heritage trust it won't be sorted for the next few decades now.

What a beautiful restoration. Great and awesome job. May the Lord God be glorified that this building is still standing! Amen

Thanks for sharing. I haven't seen Christchurch in person, since before the 2011 quake. So sad!

There is varied and interesting architecture now, probably more so than before the quakes. But opportunities have been missed to improve the transport infrastructure, and ridiculous decision-making regarding the cathedral.

Great to have this record of the pre-earthquake city. Was really vibrant back in the day. Gone forever unfortunately :( Bit of bad timing with the much bigger, more devastating Japan EQ though 2.5 weeks later. As after that it pretty much disappeared off the International news cycle.

To do that I first would have to book a flight/holiday to New Zealand, because I live in the Netherlands... Would like to go, but maybe I can't, also because I emphatically hate the covid-hysteria.

This video shows how the once vibrant and lively city center has died at the hands of the bureaucracy.
Govt control has held back the progress in the CBD so much that most bussiness has moved away to the outter city.

Thats actually wrong. My aunt and uncle are both on the council. Ones a town planner and the other a civil engineer. They took their time so they could plan out the city to be better than before. Often a city evolves over a very long time span making it a real mess to try and implement new technologies and ideas into. With Christchurch the slate was wiped clean and they were able to redesign a CBD to fit with today. It was nothing to do with bureaucracy, it was all to do with having the chance to redesign a city and wanting to do it right.
