Jay Electronica sounded like a guest in his own debut, Jay Z washed him on the whole shit, to wait 10 years for this is frustrating, it's not a bad project but is frustrating as hell.
I agree but I honestly was expecting this to happen if he ever did an album. I always expected Hov on a Jay Elect project but not almost every song. If you take the Jay-Z aspect and just forget about it, it's still a dope project.
@Big John Boatright Agreed honestly should've just put Jay's name in the title, I would've been fine with that. Yes it's disappointing we don't get just him but the fact that we get an album instead of just songs here and there like he's done over the past decade I''ll take it. Still better than most albums out today just based of lyrics and content.
@Big John Boatright I felt this was needed for the fans of hip hop on a mainstream level. We just don't see these caliber of hip-hop artists making music like this nowadays.
Have you read the lyrics and do you understand what Jay Electronica is saying? I think it's hard to say Jay E got washed or even that Jay Z was better when you dont understand it have read what Jay E was saying
Am I the only one who liked the album for what it was and didn't feel like Jay Elec was lacking lyrically. The only verse he spit that was kinda lazy was the song where he kept rhyming body with party. I like that Hov was on it a lot and I don't think that he washed him. As crazy as it sounds, they both were rappin' about the same shit. Jay-Z hasn't bragged really on an album since Magna Carta. Outside of there not being any hard drums on the record, I was satisfied with it.
Me I loved it....they are kinda contradicting Jay z has been a 5% er since magna carta. Jay Elec has been with the NOI for the past 10 years. I really need people to do real research before they review, and not also put others input into your opinion. Also I believe Jay Elec's goal was to bring attention to the NOI because Of Mr. Farrakhan's ban from the net.
In general fans that dont like it, arent giving reasons about the quality of the music, they are more just upset because it's not what they expected and they aren't accepting it for what it is. The quality of the music, lyricism etc is excellent and to me this is a piece of art.
Also most people love the album including critics, theres just a few mixed reviews but there mainly based on there being jay z on it which is just not accepting it for what it is
If anything takes 10 years it'll disappoint and the problem with J electronica is he doesn't have that much material, so if he has about 12 songs in his catalog everything is amazing but that's all his work from 10 years it's not fair to compare that to a rappers who has 50+ songs. They based expectations on a small catalogue. And let's not forget that j electronica was on control too. We only remember Kendrick and Big Shane
Blunted After Dark Media I loved it, I just think people aren’t listening to jay elects bars because he doesn’t have energy, if he rapped with the exhibit C/A energy I feel people would of been all over it.
When I heard them I went nuts, thought I was going to get a verse and bust! Universal Soldier would have been lit with a Griselda feature...but again who the hell wants that Griselda smoke!!! Dem Griselda boys bring that volcano smoke... rumour has it Griselda resulted in Pompeii...buried an entire village in smoke and ash!
It wouldn't of anyway theres plenty of rappers writing better Rhymes in one day. If it takes 10 years to release an album in my opinion.its questionable how good you are.
In terms of just the music, I like this album. Regardless of Jay Z being all over it. I still really enjoy Jay Electronica's rapping on it, Jay Z's rapping is great. The production is outstanding. I love the black empowerment, and surprisingly even the 5%r hotep shit. I can understand why people could be upset that this isn't really a Jay Electronica solo debut. That's fair, but when talking about the album purely from a music standpoint, it's still very good.
I remember in 2012 when Jay Electronica released a track list of 15 tracks for his Act II: Patents of Nobility (The Turn) album (google it). That is the album I wanted to hear. I wonder why he never released that album. It has all the just blaze production missing on “a written testimony” and it was gonna be a Jay Electronica led album not this Jay Z featuring Jay Electronica project that we got. It felt like Jay Z wanted to get off his common sense and talib kweli bars fully in a way he’s never done before and doing this via jay electronica was the way he felt he could do it. I wish it was just called a joint project like watch the throne and then jay electronica releases Act II: Patents of Nobility (The Turn) afterwards (I hope he still does)
Definitely not worth waiting 10 years for. The intro he didn't even rap on and you'd think after 10 years he'd at least make the effort to then just having someone talk. An Budden was right Jay outrapped him on his own shit it definitely sounds more like a Jay album. Usually I think Budden talks shit but I agree with him this time.
I feel like if you don’t understand the message of the album it becomes just an okay album. If y’all did a lyrical breakdown in conjunction to the sonical critique, it would definitely take on a whole different meaning. Picking it apart piece by piece isn’t doing it justice as a complete piece of art. Also, interesting that you mention Travis Scott’s feature replacing Kanye, it makes the rift between Jay Z and Kanye that much more apparent. The heavy Islam influence in this album compared to Kanye being heavily influenced by Christianity brings to mind more questions about their relationship and how they’ve both individually evolved over time.
So you want him to be spitting like he's 30 year old when dude now 40,? The problem is most folk are ten years old but mentally ten years behind so that why they like jay elect from ten years ago..
It was more cryptic then old elec that’s why it wasn’t appreciated as much but in terms of being entertaining on the mic jay outshined him….old jay elec was conscious had mad double / triple entendres , crazy rhymes schemes all that but he also had charisma on the mic & he was funny sometimes I feel like he kinda lost that a bit…but jay z did that style justice like myke said maybe cause jay z was hanging out with younger guys like Mach hommy and that give him a spark lyrically & since jay z still got that charisma on the mic that’s why he outshined him
Jay-z been on the 5%/Gods and Earth shi.. Remember back in the day he was under Jaz. I think Charlemagne even asked him about it on the breakfast club.
Can't believe 2 of these dudes consider themselves Jay Z fans and think 4:44 is his only time being vulnerable. I could understand the dude with dreads saying he doesn't really listen to Jay, but Jay spits like this across his career
Seems like the people that say that are talking about the album as a whole. 4:44 Jay is transparent on the entire project as opposed to 4 or 5 songs on a reg Jay album
Facts jay z probably the most personal rapper. That’s his appeal, he’s remained relevant all these years for 2 reasons: 1. He always embraces new hot artists. 2. He raps about his real personal life, from his drug days to being married while most rappers just rap about them same 4-5 years they were in the street life.
It's simple, Jay Elec was scared to embarrass himself because of the expectations so he made the album like this. He was good back in the day, but he's not even close to as good as people hyped him up to be and I won't be told otherwise until he proves himself again. Anyone can write 5 amazing songs, but it's about who can do it consistently and for a longer period of time.
I agree with the first part of your comment, but he has shown to be consistently good from track to track. He has about 100 songs out before this, Google it.
For as limited music as Jay Electronica has put out, it was too much religious stuff for me. If he would've had a lot more material out I could've probably rocked with it more but he should've started off first on the album. No Jus Blaze on production was another disappointment
It is a tribute to the Nation of Islam, The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, and The Honorable Louis Farrakhan. Dissect and study! This album is of the highest order! It requires a 3rd eye and a 3rd ear.
Eric Ali Khan foh the references are almost completely surface level. I find the NOI to be one of the most hilariously asinine religious sects of the modern world, and I still understood pretty much every reference made. Being familiar with certain religious concepts doesn’t give you a strong third eye. Nor does having read the Qur’an or undergoing dianetics or knowing what Ezekiel’s Wheel is. Peace
@@masteryakubalikhan704 people keep saying it's surface level as if that's not the entire point of rap music. Gotta dumb it down enough for people to understand and to get them intrigued
@@masteryakubalikhan704 Sorry I didnt see this until today. I actually think the burden of proof is on you to show me the evidence of this album being so deep, as it’s not really possible for me to prove that it doesn’t exist. Like if you claim Sasquatch is real and I said no, I think it’d be on you to show me otherwise if that makes sense. Anyway tho, I’ll give like an example or two of what I’m talking about. From flux capacitor: “Remember Rappin Duke? Duh-ha, duh-ha - You never thought we'd make it to La ilaha illa Allah” Like in this, a listener might hear the “La ilaha illa Allah” and go “woah this is deep”. But he’s literally just referencing the first part of the muslim proclamation of faith - “there’s no God accept Allah.” That’s it. Essentially saying, “you’d never thought I’d end up being a devout muslim.” Not much more. Here’s another one: “Jay Electollah Flomeini mainly is support mainly - The fatwa he issued on al-Shayṭān was delivered plainly” Jay Elec is just referencing ayatollah Khomeini’s condemnation of the controversial book “satanic verses”. This reference doesnt go any further. Just two lines. There’s also some similar references to the tribe of shabazz and black kings and all that kinda stuff. When he talks about that kind of stuff, its just one or two line references, nothing more. I don’t think he hides behind these biblical or islamic references, but I do think there are certain listeners that hear them and simply subconsciously associate the references as inherently deep and intellectual because the Nation of Islam is seen as the religion of the actualized black man or something like that. But anyway, “It requires a 3rd eye and a 3rd ear.” Really? It requires any level of experience with islam or the mildest interest in religious studies. Anyway I hope this gets to you and I apologize for this writing a whole essay in a UA-cam comment.
Not even, I grew up around all that stuff and it’s not deep. Very beginner level FOI stuff. Those who are impressed don’t have many original thoughts about the faith
@@MartyMcFly__25 I didnt say it was deep. I'm saying if you have no context, it just sounds like a bunch of words. Like you dont even know what he is talking about.
@@getayereigns2438 my problem? I understood it. I am not part of the faith but I grew up around people of that faith and was recruited by it. My best friend growing up is still in it. But if you never been to one NOI mosque you just hearing words. You cant possibly enjoy any Jay Electronica verse unless you like the flow.
The production and lyrics were solid. If I was told that a Jay Z and Jay Electronica album was coming, I would be happy. And that’s what we got. So I’m happy! I disagree with the review, but enjoy hearing you guys. Stay safe brothas!
The moment I heard Hov rapping first on this album I understood alot about Jay Elect. From having Hov on here 8 times, to the 10 year wait, to having another rapper start off your debut album….it told me Jay Elect might not be as confident in his work as we think AND he is uncomfortable with being critiqued….I still enjoyed the album, I think that their are alot of things that I need to go back and read and do research on because in Hip Hop I dont think we had someone talk about the FOI as open as they did on this album. So alot of the bars I didnt or understand so it will take some time to really digest but I also think people had unreasonable expectations for it and adding Hov on it put the bar of expectations into outer space.
The line about staying up for Falon late nights is about his sister (named Falon) - the previous bar is about Hav asking him to drop an album for his sister
gunnyo50 I mean, Joe and others got him a bit raddled, I don’t see why the valid points made here won’t give him some needed insight on what to do next.
Jay has literally been this good for YEARS. He can turn this on and off. He knows what kind of rapper Jay Elect is and knows that he has to come correct so Jay really used the full breadth of his powers. Jay Z can do this anytime he wants and is truly the best rapper alive.
I think it was never was supposed to come out to begin with. It's not uncommon for artist to get signed for the sole purpose to shelve that artist for various reasons. But I'll keep my theories to myself. EDIT: I posted before I heard the review and Myke said Jay bit off Mach Hommy. Myke is that dude for saying that.
Frank Nitti Yall always trynba credit someone else for Hov. Griselda was inspired by Jay. Not the other way around. You think if Jay wanted to hop all over Fly god or Benny’s albums theyd tell him no?
I was guilty of heavily criticising this album when it dropped because of the expectations but a few months later my opinion has changed. If you take this album for what it is then I’d say it’s actually a beautiful album
Even though Jay stole the show I loved how Elec and Jay went back and forth and I fucked with the beat selection. Was it worth over 10 years though? Eeeeeeehhhhhhhhh........ but it was a hella fun listen and I really enjoyed it. The content was really dope to me even if I don't always agree with the messaging.
This whole project showed and he explained his issues with SELF, DOUBT, AND INSECURITIES, he is still dealing with. The war is still brewing within him, even while still on his spiritual journey. He's not in a happy place outside the confides of the NOI affiliation.
Im not that big of a Hov fan but i have to completely agree with Myke when he said he saved this album. No hate to Electronica but he seemed more full of life on these features. I do like what Jigga has been doing since 4:44 though.

Every time B talks about his mother i get emotional
Sidar Kesen thug tears for the homie
love how y'all working on cleaning the studio and the importance of protecting from the virus. I hope y'all stay safe! The DEHH crew gotta stay alive
Am I the only one who heard Westside Gunn ad-libs all over this?
When I heard them I went nuts, thought I was going to get a verse and bust! Universal Soldier would have been lit with a Griselda feature...but again who the hell wants that Griselda smoke!!! Dem Griselda boys bring that volcano smoke... rumour has it Griselda resulted in Pompeii...buried an entire village in smoke and ash!
benny got hov rapping.
They also just sounded like dump gawd adlibs tbh
Naw I heard it too. Jay is biting Westside Gunns style
No
40 mins?!? Yea this review about to be classic ✊🏽
This was the most disappointing album so far. Babysitting album. Jay Z rapped like a beast though!
@@TealeafRogers real talk this album felt insulting cause I came out of it wanting a Jay Z album on another man's album.
No matter what elec dropped he was never gonna live up to the crazy hype from all these years. As a watch the throne style tag team tho it bumps
Look at y'all leading by example. Love it. Hope y'all stay safe and hygenic.
I wish it was just called a joint project like watch the throne and then jay electronica releases Act II: Patents of Nobility (The Turn) afterwards (I hope he still does)
Mixing is from the Myspace era on half the tracks. No excuse for that these days.
@TORAH KNIGHT TEMPLE: JUDAH NATZARAH I half agree with you but there's plenty gritty beats mixed clean
@Daniel Hill I preferred Kaynes album over this and that was proper corny.
Joe us completely right The gap between Hov and Elect was massive in this imo. Jay had so many dope verses
Love ALL mikes takes on here, you’re brillliant bro
"You needed a thesaurus, the Qu'ran, the Bible, a dictionary, Google and Ask Jeeves to decipher the s*** he was saying on Eternal Sunshine"
Lmao 😂🤣
Nah... Eternal Sunshine was simple and straight foward. This new album went too over peoples head.
@@felipealem6590 Then it's not that simple if it goes over a lot of people's heads.
I liked this album but yeah JAY ELECTRONICA had better lyrics 10 years ago.
Totally agree
So you want him to be spitting like he's 30 year old when dude now 40,? The problem is most folk are ten years old but mentally ten years behind so that why they like jay elect from ten years ago..
Revisiting this album I feel Jay Electronica’s lyricism was slept on
It was more cryptic then old elec that’s why it wasn’t appreciated as much but in terms of being entertaining on the mic jay outshined him….old jay elec was conscious had mad double / triple entendres , crazy rhymes schemes all that but he also had charisma on the mic & he was funny sometimes I feel like he kinda lost that a bit…but jay z did that style justice like myke said maybe cause jay z was hanging out with younger guys like Mach hommy and that give him a spark lyrically & since jay z still got that charisma on the mic that’s why he outshined him
@@giovannidejoie8618 I definitely was trolling … Jay Electronica is Jay Electronica
@@justicexholidayJust went back to it, still dogshit.
Fruits of the spirit is the best verse on this album.
Been waiting on this!
yo! i didn't even make the Mach Hommy connection but after going back to listen, Myke is spot-on. Jay's flow is way more buttery than Mach's tho.
Jay-z been on the 5%/Gods and Earth shi.. Remember back in the day he was under Jaz. I think Charlemagne even asked him about it on the breakfast club.
No Jay Z is not a Five Percenter, no no one from Allah School in Mecca. Look for UA-cam clip by Born Justice Allah and the source magazine.
Yeah he’s always referenced it and has taking nuggets from it. I doubt he’s a member
Just a voice for da people..the many people, places, things that encompass HIP-HOP. And maturing justly...#ezelldazh
Whether he's a member or not he's definitely been giving them nods forever now.
Jay Z used to be with Jaz-O and the Ansaar Allah community.
4:44 as a whole. Jay-Z has always shown vulnerabilities just not for entire album.
You Must Love Me
Facts jay z probably the most personal rapper. That’s his appeal, he’s remained relevant all these years for 2 reasons:
1. He always embraces new hot artists.
2. He raps about his real personal life, from his drug days to being married while most rappers just rap about them same 4-5 years they were in the street life.
Feefo kills the intro, clean. No one can touch him on UA-cam
This is what happens when you don’t work on your craft. This is a lazy album
Exactly
Mike: “I am not a jayz fan”
Mike: “Jayz doesn’t rap like this”
lol
The fact that he really thinks that he was rapping better on this than on The Blueprint is crazy to me
Myke has a really weird bias against JayZ. Pretty much hates all his albums except for his debut
@@eyecontrol4900 I think Myke maybe a bit of a contrarian. Anything that isn't abstract isn't for him.
@@TONEYVISIONENTERTAINMENT reasonable doubt isn't abstract but he liked it. I think he just hates Bling Era sounds in his Jay's later 2000s albums
Thanks for the effort, really appreciate y’all dedication. Wouldn’t mind a remote review through Zoom
Dorian RC Taylor relax brother
I agree with the first part of your comment, but he has shown to be consistently good from track to track. He has about 100 songs out before this, Google it.
"Anyone" you say...well where are your 5 classic songs???
@Dorian RC Taylor no
"anyone can write 5 amazing songs" um no they cannot lol
Feefo and Myke how is that “Weeknd album “ looking ?
This is the Dear Summer of the 2020s.
Jay was doing that before dear summer
Be safe out there guys! Thanks for the content.
Been waiting on this shit !
Peace
@@josephniedermeyer4874 Okay. Since you say the references made on this album are on the surface. Please give us your exegesis Niedermeyer.
Duh-ha, duh-ha - You never thought we'd make it to La ilaha illa Allah”
Like in this, a listener might hear the “La ilaha illa Allah” and go “woah this is deep”. But he’s literally just referencing the first part of the muslim proclamation of faith - “there’s no God accept Allah.” That’s it. Essentially saying, “you’d never thought I’d end up being a devout muslim.” Not much more.
Here’s another one:
“Jay Electollah Flomeini mainly is support mainly - The fatwa he issued on al-Shayṭān was delivered plainly” Jay Elec is just referencing ayatollah Khomeini’s condemnation of the controversial book “satanic verses”.
THANK YOU DEHH for giving us ONE more Review for possibly the year!! Much love and respect. Stay safe!
Been bumpin’ this album all day for the first time since summer. So good!
Jay Electronicas verses only mean alot to people who are FOI or 5%er who understand what he is talking about. That's the problem with the album.
Well said.
Not even, I grew up around all that stuff and it’s not deep. Very beginner level FOI stuff. Those who are impressed don’t have many original thoughts about the faith
That's your problem. Your missing the point. They just Cracked the Seal
Been watching y’all since the Take Care review. Hope y’all stay safe❤️
Oh yeah? Well I've been here since Sorry 4 The Wait Review. Looks like I win.
Jxson247 yo avi pic legendary 🙌🏽💯😎👏🏽👌🏽
The production and lyrics were solid. If I was told that a Jay Z and Jay Electronica album was coming, I would be happy. And that’s what we got. So I’m happy! I disagree with the review, but enjoy hearing you guys. Stay safe brothas!
It was a JAY-Z mixtape with heavy Jay Elec features.
Excited to see this one.
Appreciate any and all content, guys and team! Stay safe everyone.
Been a fan since 2011. Listening to this sanitizing a building. Love you guys, stay safe.
I hope Jay Electronica sees this review and it lights a fire in him.
Nothing lit a fire in Jay Electronica for 10 years, I doubt these guys critiques of his latest work would compile him to do any better.
gunnyo50 I mean, Joe and others got him a bit raddled, I don’t see why the valid points made here won’t give him some needed insight on what to do next.
He can’t take criticism
DJ Devinstation he didn’t want to drop an album for fear of criticism so I think more criticism will make him even less likely to drop something
If he sees this review he’s 110% never dropping another album again LMAO
"Stop rapping" I'm fucking dead, bro
Jay has literally been this good for YEARS. He can turn this on and off. He knows what kind of rapper Jay Elect is and knows that he has to come correct so Jay really used the full breadth of his powers. Jay Z can do this anytime he wants and is truly the best rapper alive.
I preciate you guys risking y’all safety to still get content out . Thanks again guys been anticipating this review an Electronica’s album
Oh yall dropping dropping!
Appreciate that the DEHH guys gave us this review.
Stay healthy all 🙏🏾
The only reason this probably came out is because of how much Jay-Z is on it lmao if it was 100% Jay Elect it would've never come out
I think it was never was supposed to come out to begin with. It's not uncommon for artist to get signed for the sole purpose to shelve that artist for various reasons. But I'll keep my theories to myself.
EDIT: I posted before I heard the review and Myke said Jay bit off Mach Hommy. Myke is that dude for saying that.
It's like that Dear Summer situation with Memphis Bleek all over again.
Facts.
I think those *Griselda* niccaz got Hov rapping like this.
Frank Nitti facts,
Need a Hov x Westside Gunn tape
fm232 that would beyond sick!
Frank Nitti Yall always trynba credit someone else for Hov. Griselda was inspired by Jay. Not the other way around. You think if Jay wanted to hop all over Fly god or Benny’s albums theyd tell him no?
Wtf! Jayz started out rhyming like similar to this.... Stop it! .. Jay z is 50 he's going be talking wisdom ISH not guns and women ...
I was guilty of heavily criticising this album when it dropped because of the expectations but a few months later my opinion has changed. If you take this album for what it is then I’d say it’s actually a beautiful album
I believe Jay Z heard the album and said, “ I gots to get on this”. This is a level of Hov we have not heard.
Y'all stay safe out here!!
Thanks fellas for this review....appreciated
The Fallon line was referencing his sister named Fallon
love y’all for doing this came at the perfect time
Even though Jay stole the show I loved how Elec and Jay went back and forth and I fucked with the beat selection. Was it worth over 10 years though? Eeeeeeehhhhhhhhh........ but it was a hella fun listen and I really enjoyed it. The content was really dope to me even if I don't always agree with the messaging.
Tha Swami nailed it! I agree completely
Totally agree... I also feel like Jay Elec still has the skills he once showed 10 yrs back
This whole project showed and he explained his issues with SELF, DOUBT, AND INSECURITIES, he is still dealing with. The war is still brewing within him, even while still on his spiritual journey. He's not in a happy place outside the confides of the NOI affiliation.
Not easy to be chosen to save lives
Jay-Z been rapping with that flow for the past 3 years..The Carters is where he was doing it a lot
They recorded APIDTA on the day they found out about Kobe (said that on the live release). Really just shows how recent the actual recording has been
Not just Just Blaze ,Jay got poppin from Angela yee being his manager way back when and the puffy co-sign
Cant exclude YE
Damn great information I didn't know
BadNewz BrownBoxing Erykah Badu started her label for him. She pushed him behind the scenes too. Nas as well
@@sinematic06 Wait, what? Angela Yee was Jay Z's manager?!
S T Jay Elec not Jay-Z lol
Im not that big of a Hov fan but i have to completely agree with Myke when he said he saved this album. No hate to Electronica but he seemed more full of life on these features. I do like what Jigga has been doing since 4:44 though.
It’s Here Now
YES!!!!!!! FINALLY!!!!!!!!!
Glad to see y’all back! Haven’t seen a video in a cool minute
Anybody would’ve had an issue rappin with Hov who is arguably the greatest of all time.
True, but damn without him this Album would be TRASH
Marlon Varnell You missed the part when I said arguably. I wasn’t making a definitive statement since music like all art is subjective.
