Ive got all my ferrets as rescues from a shelter costs 5 to 10 uk pounds every one i got i took to my vet for a check up 30 pounds and most of them have been euthanised for cancers costing £50 2 major operations for £ 100 , euthanasia £70 .so for me no major vet fees, just food and vitamins roughly £30 a month, in the Uk we dont have to worry about rabbies or distemper shots! So uk bills are not too bad?
@mattm7798 ohhh? You mean the ferret farmers? Who also supply ferrets for testing?? Not only breeders but suppliers ? The same sort of thing as the beagle farmers who supplied beagles for smoking tests? Ferrets are used as test subjects for heart treatments , blood testing and much more?? SAVE THE FERRETSl
Your vet care was way less expensive. We have had multiple ER visits for $1500 at the end of our boys life for insulimona. Our vet visits are $80 regular and X-rays $180 for heart failure
My vet charges 150$ for a regular visit and 188 for a sick visit per ferret. I have 4 ferrets. I've had emergency visits a few times since owning ferrets because once one gets sick if you don't realize it right away, they all get sick or need the meds regardless. One time it was almost 5k. A few years ago I had to put my Stewie to sleep and he was at the MSPCA ER for 2 days, it cost 2700$ . We never go on vacation because i spend all my money on pee pads, food, cages..Toys , vet, tubes etc. Love them tho. But after these 4 I'm done lol
This was super helpful but with the expensive cost I highly doubt I'll spend that much because my last dog only cost me $3,320 before she died so this isn't totally accurate and I highly doubt I'll be spending 10,000 on a ferret during the 7 years probably 1,000-2,000 from what I'm hearing is her ferret was super unlucky and had lots of issues.
Honestly, she is a great ferret owner and went way above and beyond what many pet owners would spend. If your ferret is 3 and needs treatment, you do it because they are well within the normal lifespan. As they approach 5 6 7 etc, they are nearing the end of their lifespan and any medical procedures may only prolong their life weeks to months. You then have to consider quality of life and quite frankly, whether you can afford it. I know some well intentioned people condemn others for not spending all they can on vet bills, but most pets other than tortoises and birds are not genetically going to outlive you, and that's ok in the sense of if the animal will need costly constant vet help just to stay alive, is that really a life worth living for the animal?
My first ferret lived 9 years in good health. My 2 ferrets are now 3 and 6 and both have adrenal disease and the shot per year is now $500 cdn at my vet up from $300 when my first ferret was diagnosed 2 years ago. The vet visit is now $118.00 up from $60 a year ago so I am looking for a new vet. I love the crazy guys and do not regret getting them but yes it is a very costly commitment.
Yeah, for some reason, most of the ferrets in the US are from the same mass breeder, Marshall, which has bred for friendliness, but also massively inbred to achieve this. Finding a quality ferret breeder in the US is not easy.
800$ on a suspected bowel obstruction this includes the x-ray, the free "your ferret is a clumsy dummy and took a bad fall" diagnosis, the clotting agent, fluids for the slight dehydration (because he apparently couldn't figure out how to use a nonrodent bottle).
Help! We need to move and can't take our ferret.I'm looking for a kind owner, you,to take him,he free roams, has a nice big cage, loves duk soup for breakfast, and is very sweet but lonely. Can you please take him..I'm afraid to give him to anyone who wouldn't know how to take care of him.Thx
Holy crap. I had ferrets with all kind of issues but i don't think i spent more than a 1000 usd on any single ferret over its lifetime. That being said, i live in eastern Europe so vet costs are nowhere near as high as in the US, it seems.
You also, living in Europe, have access to genetically much stronger ferrets luckily. In the US, somehow Marshall ferrets are often the only ferrets available.
I know I should probably call my vet but I’m going to ask as many people as I can first before I take her in tomorrow. Can I spread my cold sore to ferrets? She’s acting funny and I have a cold sore, I’m worried
Omg where do u live/where is your vet bc it sounds very cheap compared to others Ive seen and I think this would be perfect for me when I soon get ferrets
My first ferret, Leona somehow fell from her hammock at the top of the cage, missed the two hammocks under "hers" and broke her right fang. Of couse she did this on a Friday night, no Vets open on weekend, added water to her pellets to make a mush she could eat without chewing. Monday to the vet, they kept her over night, cost a little over a $100. All hammocks were moved to the bottom of the cage.
Have you done a video on harnesses? We are wanting to get our ferrets some harnesses, but they are complicated, confusing, and we have had them pull out of them. If you already did it, sorry. I must have missed it. Nim and Dusty are brother and sister, and Nim, being a lot smaller, is harder to find one for. Dusty is kinda chunky, and 50% bigger. Anyways, thanks.
It varies by vet. In CA, you should have access to a lot of them so just go on google and check out the reviews. Also don't be afraid to shop around. Just because a vet is good, doesn't mean there isn't an equally good vet that charges less.
Hey! Reaching out because I’m currently trying to earn a ferret! I’ve seen almost all your videos in addition to other UA-camrs like emzotic and the friendly neighborhood ferrets and am aware of the responsibility it requires. Could you recommend a safe odor control spray for ferrets, to keep my room smelling fresh?
Keep in mind those end of life vet visits often are optional in the sense that a good vet will tell you "even if this is successful, it may only prolong his life for a matter of months". You have to weigh the costs in terms of money and in terms of quality of life. These decisions are often not easy but vet bills add up very quickly.
You may want to choose someone in your life not emotionally attached to them to make the decision for you. This will help the decision be based on the animals quality of life without emotions clouding that up. But I can relate as I was against getting a Marshall ferret for a while but in the US, it is not easy to find a non-Marshall ferret. I've also noticed many do not come de-scented for some reason and some breeders won't sell to new ferret owners. If it were economically viable, buying from Europe would make sense as the bloodlines over there are much more diverse.
I have a question. I really want to look in to breeders but I’m not sure where to look or even what to look for in a breed. Also the oldest you can get them from a breeder. Since I don’t want them to be too young but I don’t know if it’s possible for me not to get a baby from a breeder. And is it not as good to get a ferret from a pet store. I’m afraid that they will be mean and not have shots and descended. I need help 😭
Honestly, just google ferret breeder and nearby states. Some have more than others. Keep in mind for some reason, some non marshall ferrets are not fixed or descented, so factor that into the cost. Also, some won't sell to new ferret owners and there may be a waitlist. It sucks, but Marshall has such a monopoly on ferrets a good breeder is not easy to find.
Kristi from Omaha, we have the same vet where you are? :) Great job on the video! Yeah, the DES have gone up! I about fainted when I paid Zeus bill in April! We use a compounding pharmacy for their insulinoma, and feel we get a better quality product, as per the pharmacist. With two prednisolone rx's and one diazoxide per month, two ferrets meds are a little over 200! But Zeus' insulinoma is more advanced and requires a higher dose, which can be lessened by the concentration of the compounded prednisolone, and or diazoxide. Not to mention their DES implants (both 2x a year since they actively have adrenal) so...$200+ for compounded meds, and 1200 for two ferrets for DES. I feel All Felines costs are ok, otherwise. Also, love Dr. K, since she has a *feel* for treating them. Our two A & I kids are 7. The Little Gods. :) Keep up the good work! ❤
I say it's better to bring them home at the same time. I have integrated multiple ferrets and it always goes smoother if you get two that are already introduced and used to each other so you know they will get along. Not all ferrets do and it can take a lot of work trying to get them comfortable which is not always easy to watch. A fight for dominance is always going to happen and you have to be patient. They will look like their fighting, sometimes they will fight, and you have to be prepared for the sounds they will make and any blood or fecal matter ( ferrets will often expel it while being introduced to one another). You have to have a tough skin and let it happen because it will continue until dominance has been established. ( Always split them up if you see blood. This means the ferret means business and they could kill each other.) If you can avoid all this by getting two ferrets that are already friends, then by all means do it. And then there is always the possibility that no matter what you do, they can't get along and will have to live separately. Adrenal disease ( very common in US ferrets, out of the ten that I have owned 6 of them ultimately had it)) can make them extremely aggressive towards other ferrets and you may not know the ferret has it, particularly in its early stages.
I should mention that fight for dominance is less likely to happen in kits. But it will almost always happen in ferrets that have reached adulthood. Also, keep in mind that it isn't uncommon for people to lie about the history of the ferret, tell you it's healthy when in fact it has adrenal, or tell you it's a baby when it is actually much older. Had this happen to me when a ferret I adopted from a private owner told me that the ferret was a year old, but it was actually more like 8 years old and ended up dying three days after I brought her home.
As someone who works at a Veterinary Clinic, your vet charges WAY less than mine does. But, we do have things called Wellness Plans, which cover all preventive care like vaccines, deworming, blood tests, dental cleanings, ear swab, fecal tests, and some special care items like a tono. Without a wellness plan, it would be $71 for the exam, and doing all the preventive care items like blood tests, vaccines, fecal testing and deworming, that would be over $400 dollars. Also, euthanasia costs about $400 at my work. Sounds like you've got a very affordable vet.
please make a video on the process of actually getting a ferret and the best places to adopt

thank you for sharing these numbers. It's super helpful for other ferret owners or people thinking about getting one.
I wish it were economically viable to import ferrets from Europe. The bloodlines are so much strong than the Marshall monopoly in the US.
