    As someone who does brake jobs so often I carry the tools to do a job with me at all times I can say that there are SOME vehicles that can be expensive, but more often than not most people can get away with the cheapest pads and having the rotors turned unless they go for a long time without checking them. Even then, it's rare that you'll need to replace a caliper even if the rotor is destroyed.
    Unless you're driving your car as aggressively as they do in the car commercial every day you own it, you don't need top of the line parts to stop safely. Most people with domestic or older forign cars can get all the brake parts for between $100-$200. Labor for changing the parts and fluid can get up there as well, but you should never see a bill of more than $600 total unless you need everything on all 4 corners.

    I do my own brake jobs (rotors, brake pads and brake fluids), I just buy quality parts and do it myself. Been doing it since I owned a car. I never brought my cars to any stealerships for this kind of maintenance or repairs. Saved me a ton of money.

    I have had seized brakes on several old cars. Lack of maintenance to the brake system such as cleaning and lubricating the slide pins, cleaning brake dust off the calipers, and of course in New England, salt and crap helps things rust.

    I had a 2011 A4. I had exactly the same thing as my dealer quoted about $800 for all. I thought was very high. I would take it to someone else for a second opinion. I did part myself. The front brakes are very easy to do. I bought a front set of good quality pads and rotors for about $200 from the local auto parts store. It took about 45 min or less to replace. The rear, on the other hand, is a bit more involved.There is a specific procedure on how this is done you can find online or from Audi. With the electronic parking brake, you have to have a VW/Audi or compatible scan tool. Not a generic OBDII scanner. The reason for this is you have to tell the computer to retract the electronic actuator that applies the rear parking brakes and hold them while you disassemble and reassemble the rear brakes. You have to leave the key on NO START! Hence the scan tool. If this is not done the actuators will come out and is a mess to fix. This is directly from the Audi repair procedure.

    I've never met or talked to anyone who ever had their rotors turned or machined. Its always cheaper and easier to just go to autozone or wherever and buys new rotors. Plus disc brake changes are easy to do at home.

    The capiller one wheel probably seized.

    DO IT YOURSELF. There's plenty of diy videos out there or you can buy a repair manual. Often you'll find oem or quality aftermarket pads and rotors online for all 4 wheels for under 150 dollars.
    I've saved thousands over the past few years doing my own brake jobs on various used cars I've bought.

      Calipers rarely need replacing. That is why we found it strange that the service was recommend. Although it is possible for a caliper to seize, usually with much older age.

  • @RobinsM

    The caliper thing sounds like BS. I remember I had to replace mine because my car was a used in the winter they were seized any my warranty wouldn't cover weather damage.

    • @RobertLeBlancPhoto

      You should've complained to the manufacturer. The Stealership denied your warranty claim because it costs them nothing to do so. Had you stuck to your guns, it would've been covered. Do you really think the vehicle manufacturer designed their brakes to not withstand winter weather?

    Truth be told if you are driving a premium German car there a number of things you must factor in about maintenance. Either
    1. You chose to be informed about your car so that people don't take advantage of you because they think you are a rich chump
    Or
    2. Accept you are rich and can afford to cough out more then necessary when you are ignorant of the topic at hand.
    Otherwise, the experience will be dreadful.

  • @neiljborja
    @neiljborja 7 років тому

    Good episode as always but you didn't answer the German vs American/Japanese question. From my understanding, it has to do with autobahn expectations, where German cars makers are willing to sacrifice rotor life more than other manufacturers since they have the expectation of their cars being able to brake well on the autobahn.

    • @Syntax.error.
      @Syntax.error. 7 років тому

      The break pads grind against a metal part. You will need to replace it at some point. I don't get how that is not the case in Jap/US cars.

    • @neiljborja
      @neiljborja 7 років тому

      Material choice on the brake pads can affect wear on the rotor, with more aggressive pads causing more rotor wear than less aggressive pads.

      Audi is actually the top rated luxury maker for tech and reliability, second in reliability only to Lexus, and second in value only to Acura.

    Also stupid vw making their pads slightly smaller than the rotor... leaving that classic vw ridge on the rotor

    • @RobertLeBlancPhoto
      @RobertLeBlancPhoto 5 років тому +1

      Because pads that are a few mm smaller than the rotors are safer than the other way around, produce less dust, and prevent premature wear of the rotor edge.

      What's your point? This person has every reason to be suspicious of the caliper replacement. Calipers rarely need replacement and it's highly unlikely that a 5 years old car would need a caliper replacement. Shelling out extra dough for luxury car ownership is one thing. Being ripped off is another.
