I think I read that Vader used a force shield ability when in combat to protect his buttons and suit being manipulated via force by other force users. It didn't protect against lightsaber strikes tho. Post - suit Vader has hunted down and fought a handful of jedi, I'm sure that's the first thing Vader considered about his suit and being in combat.
Imagine being in a duel with Vader. You clash lightsabers, and quickly you begin pressing random bottons on his chest and belt! In a panic Vader force pushes you away, but the damage is done! His suit begins flashing wildly in an immaculate laser light show display! Darude Sandstorm starts playing through the speakers in his helmet! Vader begins frantically pressing buttons, trying desperately to stop this assault to his senses, but to no avail! He falls to his knees in despair, as you look on in confusion. Vader openly weeps, as you start bobbing your head to the beat!

I don’t think this is canon but I’ve actually read that Vader uses the force to maintain a force shield around himself to provide initial protection and increase reaction time, helping to protect his suit
I always assumed the vertical rods are just there to act as an obstacle to prevent unwanted button pressing e.g. if he would fall to the ground or be pressed against a wall
A good observation - perhaps they are dual function. It would make perfect sense! I’ll keep that in mind if I’m ever talking about it again in another video

It seemed unlikely then and there were probably other theories but maybe in 1983 George Lucas had already planned it and somehow it leaked out.

There’s a big head button, a David Prouse button, a Lego button, and a youngling mode button.

In rogue one hallway scene vaders box is actually turned off so, and in one of the comics he turns off his breathing so that he can move stealthily!
