Excellent! Congrats on passing! That bend must have scared the crap out of you! Jay didn’t want me to use wood in the Vice so it was metal on metal which upped my stress. I will be sharing a similar video later this week with my process!! Thanks for sharing yours! -Matt
What lol Shaving your arm to make sure you’re finished sharpening is a test older than time itself. There’s a reason that there is the colloquial phrase “shaving sharp” that is used to describe an extremely sharp knife. It’s incredibly safe to shave using a knife blade and is no different from using a razor or straight razor. Up until the 60s that’s how everyone shaved in all of history!
Will, for your quench tubes- weld a circle of metal mesh to a long rod with a hook to hang on the lip. If you drop that mesh and rod in the oil bath first, you can easily retrieve any items that accidentally go to the bottom of the quench tube by lifting the rod. If you felt fancy, you could make it a basket.

This is probably one of the most interesting videos you've done for a few reasons. I have always loved watching forged in fire. Not only are you taking us through how those guys became master smiths but you are peripherally explaining the structure and reasoning behind the tests on the show. I know how you feel, my nerves were the same for my pilot's licenses. Good job and congrats.
Back in my early days, I made a thin, double edged dagger. I was so excited it came out so thin. So I hardened it...I was SO excited I wanted to go test it. I forgot the key part...temper? It shattered on a wet branch XD. The grain structure is satiny beautiful. Keep the pieces to this day as a reminder.
My husband loves to watch your stuff and we have to download videos! (No signal at our house) I know he'll be so excited when I get home and tell him I downloaded your video! Thanks for always coming up with something creative and interesting to post! ❤ love from WV!
I recently commented on another video where you had asked about the purpose of the bend test. I said :ductility, the bend grades homogeneity of material and work stresses. Lovely to see the passing video. Well done👍🏻
I was the same way when I went to get my instrument certificate for helicopters and I was so nervous I could barely do all the calls and I had a surprise guest from the FAA that showed up to sit in the back seat. I still have PTSD after doing that test 15 years later. Good job on passing you are an amazing blacksmith keep up the good work.
Congratulations Will! Also something that I felt compelled to say regarding your channel in general…thank you for keeping it clean in regard to foul language (lack of!)! It shows good character and maturity.
I'm so excited for you! My daughter and I watched this together and we were both squinting as if it was going to come through the TV when you did the bend tests. 🙂🙂
he hasn't passed the journeyman test quite yet just a part of it, he still needs to submit 5 blades to be inspected and pass that inspection before he is a journeyman
Congratulations, that was interesting seeing the process for you to become a journeyman. I look forward to seeing you continue to grow in your craft and get to Master level. Oh and the puppy is so cute..
Hello from another Will! I've wanted to get into general blacksmithing for quite a few years and have watched oodles of channels searching for information. Your channel is great! You present information clearly and concisely, interjecting your own passion and personality. Keep up the good work!
I attended the two week intro to bladesmithing class in Old Washington, AR in 2004. Mastersmiths Joe Keelser and Jim Jackson were my instructors. In order to pass the course, we had to bend an edge quench and a full quench blade without breaking. I was relieved to pass on Thursday of week #2. Best two weeks of my life!!! You gotta go!!!
I'm just watching this on the internet and I still had the same reaction when the blade broke. I can't imagine what it was like in person! Great video and project. Thanks for taking us along for the journey with you
Congrats Will, there wasn't a shadow of a doubt that a master knife Smith like yourself would not pass, well done. Please one request. Can you do a mosaic Damascus pattern that will surpass Damascus patterns thus far and set a new bar in mosaic patterns like only your mind can come up with into a chef's knife . I just feel that you are the man to revolutionize and refine the knife game for the next generation of knife makers.
Awesome work! Those tests really are hard core! People don't realize how hard it is to get a blade to shave hair after chopping like that, and that doesn't even include BENDING THE KNIFE around a freaking corner!
he hasn't passed the journeyman test quite yet just a part of it, he still needs to submit 5 blades to be inspected and pass that inspection before he is a journeyman
Congrats! You so deserved to pass that test. You've already got a huge base of knowledge about bladesmithing and I am looking forward to seeing what you do going forward.
Wow! You weren’t kidding about “a tough piece of steel”. Pops delivered the next freaking day!!!! I’ll definitely be ordering from them again. I doubt I’ll be turning my steel into anything as durable as what you’ve made here but at least I know what it’s capable of 😊
Ya know, Alec may have a bit more on-screen carisma and better lighting, but speaking honestly, I've always considered you to be the better craftsman. And you are very quickly catching up in those areas(I like your personality better. Feels more genuine). Also, the glasses are new, right? I saw them in the last video as well, but I don't remember them any further back than that. Congrats on passing!!!
it's not quite a fair comparison as Alec does not just do bladesmithing all day long. He has a lot more of techniques he can do q lot with but that means his smithing isn't quite where it could be if he only focussed on that.
Major congrats Will. Was nice to see someone go thru the test and telling everything what was required. I was always curious. Was nice that during the test you had a cheering section. Always helps when family and friends (I assume) provides moral support!
Nice to see the journeyman blade smith level finally get some recognition here on UA-cam. I remember Josh in the blade articles. He was making fire blued liner locks when he was a kid. When I was that age. I had a cheap survival knife from the liquor store. Creating anything was probably furthest from my mind.
Congratulations That test was brutal and it's only for the journeyman qualification Really puts into perspective how difficult a master's test is and how skilled they must be
Congratulations on passing your Journeyman's test. You should be proud - now on to the next step of becoming a MASTER - good luck young man. Stay safe.
he hasn't passed the journeyman test quite yet just a part of it, he still needs to submit 5 blades to be inspected and pass that inspection before he is a journeyman
This was super cool to see! A swordsmith I used to know did some similar tests once. Because it was a sword, they did a full circle, tip to tang. The idea was that you could do a full circle in one direction, then a full circle in the other direction, with ideally no deformation. He tested a few blades and got to the point where there was a tiny bit after the second bend, which he was very pleased with.
Hello Hello From Canada!!! "CONGRATS" I thought the tang broke off when you first did the bend test, but it didn't and it held up so nice on the second bend. I can't wait to see what you are going to do now. Keep up the awesome content, stay happy and healthy.
Congrats so far on your journey to becoming a master knife maker... I am a retired master carpenter, not the same, but still, lots of work to becoming a master at anything... Loved this episode.. I have enjoyed watching you become so talented and skilled as a builder... Thank you very much for sharing...
COngratulations for your test,Will. Very nice indeed. The bend test was a cliff-hanger. You came through beautifully. Looking forward to the next time.
Will, congratulations! Today you are are a man. I was especially impressed that you made so many test blades until you were sure that you met the standard before driving up to test.
Will, you need to invest into a water belt grinder that uses diamond belts. It’s the same sander that some use when cutting custom windshields for cars. They work great by keeping the metal cold while grinding your blades as it floods the grinding area with water.
Congrats bud!! Horrifying is an understatement!!! I was turning away with safety squints watching the video!!! Your tester/mentor was pretty chill.....glad he kept the bend test safe!! Have a great weekend!!
Congrats man! I thought this was one of your best videos. It was such a treat to get to see you under pressure and to pass with flying colors! Can’t wait to see the next steps and next knives. Thanks for bringing us along for the journey. Be well 🙏
Will, I have some advice about testing the sharpness of your knife. I am a woodworker and luthier (violin-maker) and used to test my sharpened chisels and gouges on arm/wrist hair until I heard that was unsafe. I thought I was safe enough. Well, I asked a few doctors I know and they said that testing sharpness against skin brings a LOT of people to the ER. I think it was Jonathan Katz-Moses that I learned about this from and he says to test against the edge of a sheet of paper (printer paper). Please heed this warning so we can continue getting great content!
I like the make many blades, and how you talked about the grind effecting the cut.. I will keep that in mind for my test. Congratulations on your pass!
Excellent! Congrats on passing! That bend must have scared the crap out of you! Jay didn’t want me to use wood in the Vice so it was metal on metal which upped my stress. I will be sharing a similar video later this week with my process!! Thanks for sharing yours! -Matt
I looking foward to see it! Your channel is awesome!
I'll be looking forward to watching it Matt
@@oneshotme is already out.
Looking forward ti seeing your test
Congrats Will! I never knew that hair shaving was part of the test. This has got to be one of the manliest tests I’ve ever seen.
If you don’t sharpen your knife and go right to shaving arm hairs with it, then how do you know its sharp!? 🤣🤣🤣
What lol

"Cutting-edge service" - Pops did see the opportunity for a pun and they executed it flawlessly! 😁😎👍

That's a good idea!

Congratulations and welcome to the "we bend blades" club. Meetings are on Tuesday evenings and the new guy brings cake. See you at Blade Show Atlanta!

I heard that a lil bend is preferred 🤣
Sterkte by die skou Neels!
Is it byob? Bend your own blades? Or should I bring a bender? 😁 we're having fun with words now.

Congratulations on making your journeyman qualification. That was tremendously impressive performance . Best regards!
Congratulations. You are an inspiration to many a young person and us old grey beards who live vicariously through you. Be strong and courageous
I've seen the Blade Smith societies testing. I have a hard time picking up my jaw after seeing the knives that passes. Incredible.
I'm so excited for you! My daughter and I watched this together and we were both squinting as if it was going to come through the TV when you did the bend tests. 🙂🙂
Congrats on passing your Journeyman test Will! You’re going to be a Master Bladesmith in no time!

I was holding my breath during that bend. Great job, Will.
Thanks Pops for the support!!👍🏼
I started watching you and Alec a couple months ago and got hooked on knife making. I’ll be watching your work too.
It slices, it dices, it cuts two by fours,,,, but wait there's more........ Excellent.
Thanks for the video Will. Jim in Chile

Congratulations Will! Thank you so much for showing us part of what is required to be a journeyman bladesmith! Really great to see how the test goes.

Well done mate, thanks for stepping through all the trials and tribulations.
That is just a brutal series of tests for a blade. Very impressive, well done for producing a knife to pass that!
Heck yeah man, loved watching this
Congratulations
That test was brutal and it's only for the journeyman qualification

Rad! Congrats Will. Never doubted ya for a second.
Congratulations, Will!! This is awesome to see you go through failures until success. You're a true craftsman :)

Congratulations Will!!! You definitely earned it with all of your hard work and diligence. Keep getting after it man!
Congratulations Mr Stelter. You deserve this, well done from Tasmania, Australia. A LONNGG way from Montana!
Congrats Will! 👏 I absolutely love that shape of a knife.

Congrats Wil! Officially a blade Jedi!
Congratulations will well done.
Congrats, Will! Well deserved.
Congratulations on your test. I'm new to knife making and getting ready to join abs so I guess in 3 years I'll be sweating it myself.
Heartiest congratulations sir.

Good for you buddy, best of luck in the competition. God bless you buddy, you had me nervous for you. Lol.
Congratulations Will! You did really well! 🙂
Congrats on passing the test. Can't wait to see what happens in the next vid.
Congratulations! So cool seeing you going through the JS process! I have little doubt that you won’t pass.
