There's been a sentiment that I've seen floating around Tumblr, that a lot of people measure success by it lasting a lifetime, but just because something didn't last didn't mean it was a failure. Like you said, throughout this journey of making the dream a reality you did things and learned things that will certainly help you out later, you experienced things you never would have otherwise and you got to taste that dream. Which is more than a lot of people can say or even more than a lot of people will even attempt in their lives. I look forward to your future projects and endeavors, and hey you never know what the future holds.

You heard him say what went wrong: the pants sold to few, the grinder belts at a loss, the anvils were too complicated to manufacture in mass. This market isn’t made for someone this big, he couldn’t scale up to make it in house at a profit and scaling down wouldn’t nearly meet demand. It’s sad, but shows what’s wrong with today’s oligopolies and quantity over quality

Have watched Alec grow from a kid to a man, it's really been quite the journey. I follow you since the Heroic Times of your daily solo videos in your little English blacksmith workshop,
and one thing that has never changed is the energy (positive and overflowing) that you put into all your work (and your videos) .
we saw you transform (several times)
from a very very young blacksmith
    to (surprisingly) blacksmith teacher! !
then a mover (of a forge workshop),
then an "English man in New Y." oops Montana! !
and in the middle of ALL this, magnificent forge projects !
the rest, in Montana, you summarized it yourself
if this stage of your life in Montana unfortunately ends,
it suggests that the rest will probably be just as exciting

I'm turning 69 this year. I'm still trucking along.
I work as a DYI auto mechanic for over 40 years. I still enjoy it.
Tomorrow as a family we are going to replant some roses and rebuild some planting areas. I welded up a metal pipe canopy frame last week. I'm waiting on the cover to arrive so I don't have to work under the hot summer sun.
Again God Bless you young man and God speed to you and your wife and family.

Its okay to feel sad and morn that dream, but do your best to be proud as well. Youachomplished something most people only dream of doing. You moved half way around the world, started a successful bussiness, and have inspired an interest in blacksmithing in millions... and you aren't even 30 yet. I have no doubt there a great things in your future, keep dreaming and keep persuing that those dreams.

End of an era! Really sad it ended with 2020 and all its shenanigans, the run up to that point was so insane and inspiring!! It all makes sense now with the production problems etc. Now that packing US gets done, you get all of the stuff sorted and tools back home... I can't wait for going back to the roots, long build projects, more tool making (like ratchet) and more discovering of manufacturing. Not to forget all the life stuff and house things on the way! - that all if you want to of course, but you got the power! Good luck!

It's the classic battle between "high quality" products vs. "cheaper mass produced" products and what the consumer is willing to buy. I make a few knives, off and on, as a hobby. I'm by no means the caliber of Alec, however I do make a solid and attractive knife. I simply cannot sell them for the amount of materials and labor I have invested. I end up gifting them to friends. The economy prevails over craftsmanship these days.
