Thanks Don. I have been building stuff like this for years. When I was in High School, my Electric Shop Teacher asks me to build something for a competition at SIU (Southern Illinois University). I made a Capacitive Relay Tube Circuit (1962or63), same idea as this, I won First Superior.

This circuit is just one part of a the musical instrument Theremin. From the Theremin technology the US developed the proximity bomb in WWII. So this circuit can be modified for many purposes.

Hey Carl. So that's what that noise is outside my door. Where or why reinvent the wheel? Yes it my favorite oscillator design, you can make very stable or unstable for this circuit.

You maybe able to use the chip. But if the oscillator is stable the circuit won't work. The oscillator should be unstable so that as your hand approaches the antenna, the oscillator frequency changes.

I have a commercial touch switch. It works pretty good as a shack interference generator below 20m.

Is this somewhat like the proximity fuse used in missiles and bombs in WW2?

Yes it is! A circuit similar to this was very effective in WWII. Increased the the number of enemy aircraft casualties significantly. It was from a circuit of the Theremin musical instrument, Theremin was from Russia. I think sometime after the proximity fuse was developed Mr Theremin disappeared in Russia. how much turns must the coil have or any value that suits best

The coil is a P-C70-OSC with the core removed.

Curious why the 3 transistors were needed? Does it help with sensitivity?

Yes. Try to make it with less transistors and send me the diagram.

How can I insert a relay into the circuit when it detects a person? Will this also detect a screwdriver in the field?

The relay would where the LED is. No it will not detect a screwdriver because it don't have enough capacitance.

@@jbjb303 The LED gets brighter as the hand gets closer to the capacitive plate. Just replace the LED with a 12VDC relay.
