Little known fact about the treaty of Paris 1898 is that originally Spain was only going to sell pne island to the USA but the USA wanted the entire archipelago as they didn't want to risk other nations possibly making more claims/deals with Spain so they fought for All of it. Also, little known fact after the treaty, the USA committed a genocide in the Philippines during an uprising when they're maintaining control. Even during the end of the Philippine Commonwealth they wouldn't incorporate the Philippines as a state because we weren't majority white and that our agricultural processes were competing better than those in the USA (Also they gave us independence IMMEDIATELY after WW2 so they didn't get to help as much on the reconstruction. Furthermore during the dictatorship era they housed them in the USA yet only recently wants to arrest them for crimes that they already know about) Also, while the Philippines' recognises June 12th 1898 as their independence day, The USA didn't give us independence until July 4th so that it matched with theirs. Fun fact: It's only been less than 50 years since Spanish had been taken off as one of the official languages of the Philippines.
