How about the fact that he never actually caught the Larvitar? Should've brought Charizard and Bayleef for sure. I'm not bother by Heracross, that's a strong bug.
@Nate Van Slyke he actually did hatch a larvitar in johto, but he could have brought bayleaf instead of bulbasaur and could have even had his quilava or Donphan.
He caught it 20+ years ago during Ash in Johto. Everyone see Episode 132 Pokemon Ultimate Journeys There a Larvitar during Pikachu vs Charizard. After it He release Larvitar in Johto already 20+ years ago it's because Ash see Larvitar with Tyranitar + Ash got Larvitar from egg

He found a egg, it hatched, he took care of it until it's mom came and took Larvitar from Ash. Why did they show it in Pikachu vs Charizard? idk ig cus Larvitar was important?? Ok but johto ash did the worst playing ever, he literally wasted larvitar and heracross, and snorlax could have done way more, and why pikachu used double edge? I will say congrats, that was the perfect simulation, even knowing ash wouldn't act smart on a battle.
Larvitar technically wasn't his Pokemon, he returned it to his rightful mother tyranitar. I agree he could have done much more splendid agaisnt Whitney if he used Heracross.
