  • Thousands of people flocked to northeastern China’s Jilin province on Thursday as the 22nd edition of the annual Chagan Lake Ice Fishing Festival kicked off.
Chagan Lake is known as one of the top 10 freshwater lakes in China. Stretching 37 km from south to north and 17 km from east to west, it occupies an area of 420 square kilometres. Winter fishing there is recognised as an important part of the nation’s cultural heritage.
The lake set a Guinness World Record in 2009 when 168,000 kg of fish were caught from a single net.
The winter fishing season at Chagan Lake typically lasts from late December until mid-February of the following year.
