The crockpot condensed water on the inside of the lid and dripped on to the loaf as it cooked. If you were to cover the top rim with a few layers of paper towels (or leave the cloth covering in) , AND keep the lid on for a minimum of 2 hours it will be flawless! That color looked fabulous and the 25 minute tip was great 👍

I’ve got barbecue chicken in my crockpot right now on the patio, It’s 109* here in Glendale, AZ., so I didn’t want to even warm up the kitchen, not even with the crockpot.🫠

I’m in California and we are supposed to hit 111* by Saturday. I use my crockpot in the garage. No oven or stovetop cooking at all when it’s this hot. Sandwiches and salads, otherwise.

Put a tea towel between the lid and the crock, next time, to take up condensation. You’ll get a browner crust

If you put some paper towel over the Crockpot before you put the cover on it should hold any moisture from the glass cover from falling onto your bread that you are cooking. 😊

One of my biggest deals I ever got was during the after Christmas sale at Walgreens. I got a lb of yeast for 29 cents. I put it into a bag and froze it. Almost 2 years later, and it's still good. So right now, a loaf of bread costs about 10 cents

In deep Southeast Texas! Hot and humid! Try not to cook (it heats up the house), turn up the thermostat during the day. Laundry during the coolest part of the day and only when absolutely necessary (we rarely get below the 90’s). Don’t go in and out of the house if you don’t have to. We have shutters shut on all windows and hung curtains over the doors! Run ceiling and box fans. Dress cool. Yep it’s pretty dark inside but the few lights we turn on are all led. We have an in demand water heater.

The prices are really going up, I have watched the store brand bread go from 79 cents a loaf to now $2 a loaf, it is crazy. I have made homemade bread for years, always the best! If you don't want to use sugar, substitute honey, you will get the sweetness, without the worry of sugar. Just a friendly tip for next time, don't poke a hole in the top to check the temperature, just let it bake and at the end of the time frame thump the top. If you can hear a loud thump, the bread is done. If not, let it bake longer. Works every time and I have never had raw bread. Love your excitement on the avocado toast, if you like a little spice, try it next time with a little salt and red pepper flakes, so good! Have a wonderful Tuesday!

If you used tap water that is the reason your bread did not rise, you need to use chlorine free water, one thing about breads, it is best not to change the measurements when making bread.

I'm using my crockpot and electric skillet rather than my stove/oven. I'm also unplugging anything not in use. Lights on only as needed and raising the thermostat so a/c doesn't come on as much and using a fan. Electric bills have more than doubled this summer from normal summer months, so I'm doing what I can to save on that bill.

To save on electric, I have stopped turning on lights - period. I make my morning coffee and shower by the light of a 3-wick candle. Thankfully, before it's time to put my face on, it's daylight, lol. In the evening, I do anything requiring light before it gets dark - we'll see how that works in the middle of a New York Winter!

Our electric bill just went up another $30 this month. Every time I go grocery shopping I try to not spend $175, yet each time it’s it is inevitable. I try to go longer in between shopping, even a day or 2 helps. This week we are paying off our car which is going to save us $300 a month so I can’t wait to do that tomorrow!

I’ll be trying that bread as soon as I finish some from the freezer. Store brand bread here in NE Ohio is running about $1.19 to $1.50 a loaf. To save on electricity I won’t turn on the air con until the house gets to 76. We live in a split level and if we let it go any higher than that our bedroom remains in the 80s all night even with a ceiling fan. But during the day I spend as much time under a tree in our yard where it is often much much cooler and is usually breezy. I’ll take a bag of things to do and a big bottle of water and stay there most of the day. I’ve even packed a lunch so I wouldn’t have to go back inside. 😂

I never use my oven in the summer. I only have a window AC unit, and it's very hard to recover from the extra heat from the oven. The slow cooker and air fryer are my only means of baking until it's cool. I also use fans to direct the air from the window unit around the house.

I love that idea of making bread in the crock pot; and my husband is a baker by profession. Bread runs from $3.00 to $7.00 a loaf here. Our electric bill has been getting crazy high. We are seriously looking into installing a photovoltaic system since we live in Hawaii but it's $62,000 😳😲. We have not been turning on our house lights until 7pm. We use a battery powered lantern until then. We have also installed 50 gallon drums in our backyard and have redesigned our rain gutters to catch the water for our many plants and lawn.

Hi Emmy, I’m in Scotland and our already increased energy prices will increase by a further 80% in October and another 2 price hikes in January and April next year. Things are going to be desperate this winter, so I’ve been buying thermal throws, fleecy pyjamas, tea lights (for making tea light heaters) and I’m also building up a food store because our prices are increasing rapidly too. I’m aiming to use the heating for a maximum of 1 hour a day if I really need to. I’ve swapped to multi purpose air fryer (less than half the price of heating an oven) and limiting it to 2 loads of washing a week and 2 showers, the rest of the time just washing down. Luckily it’s only myself and my husband at home so it’s easier to implement. I dread to think how the majority of people are going to get through the winter. Forward planning is key ☝🏻

My crock pot is tied up right now cooking some pork loin for dinner. It's enough for at least 3 meals. Made zucchini bread this morning, and dried clothes early before the temperature climbed so the house wouldn't get so hot this afternoon. We run a dehumidifier keeping the AC from running constantly. I use the water that collects in dehumidifier to water my flowers, so I rarely have to get out the water hose. Thanks for sharing the bread recipe!

That bread looks great! During the summer I love to set up my solar cooker and take advantage of all that free cooking energy. The one I have can be a little fiddly to use but Paul could probably make a great one with directions found on line. It works similar to a crockpot and cooks all kinds of things beautifully -- I like it for making a pot of beans, which otherwise take a long time to cook. It's eye-opening to see how much energy mother nature gives us for free if we just work with her!

I have been making crockpot bread and I use my favorite recipe… but I don’t let it rise in the crockpot, I let it rise like normal, punch it down and then make a loaf and put it one the parchment paper… then I set it on high, my crockpot takes 1.5 hours and I test for 190 degrees with a meat thermometer… mine turns out more rounded and lighter on the top and you can either put it under the broiler or not 😉

I made this tonight. (I wanted to send a pic but can't figure it out, is it possible?). I used all the salt and flavor was good. I let it rise a full hour and it doubled the height, I would do this again. Many rustic bread recipies call for putting a pan of boiling salt water on a lower rack, the steam softens an otherwise hard crust. I brushed the top with milk before broiling and with butter out of the oven. It turned out great. I forgot to set my timer, I think it cooked 2 1/2 hours. My loaf deflated when I poked it with the thermometer...should have thumped it...whoops. I used small oval crockpot 1.5 qts. I will definitely use this method again, it saves the second forming and rise, and saves heat in kitchen/energy. Congrats on your first load it is a real money saver. (I just made my first tortillas which will save considerable dollars and store trips as well. They're not as difficult as one might think.) Thanks again.

Love this!! I will try it!! Ive been cutting Utility costs by line drying clothing- summer and winter. In the summer, i have racks outside i use, and in the winter i do the laundry in the evening., and put items on hangers to dry hanging in my doorways. This is a win/win. I’m not using the cost of a dryer, and as the clothing dries overnight, it puts moisture into the air. I find my nose isn’t as stuffy, and my skin stays smoother too.

With the fans running, we put our AC on 78 degrees and are very comfortable here in Vicksburg, MS, where our weather has been in the high 80s and 90s for months. What a great idea about the bread!
Oh my goodness...I could write volumes and volumes on how I save on utilities!! I use almost none!
    Water:
I use the tiniest stream of water possible.
I get whatever I'm washing wet with that tiny stream and then turn the water off while I wash...and that's hands, face, glasses, teeth, dishes, car, myself in the shower, etc. I also wait until my clothing is either physically soiled and/or not smelling sweet anymore before I wash it.
I only use full loads in the washing machine. I collect water that would normally go down the drain while warming up shower water and use it water plants...both inside and outside. I used to be able to do this a lot more, but now I'm not physically strong enough to do much of it at all. I've also been known to catch the water draining from the washing machine, and used dish water to water outdoor flowers. I don't do that with bleach water. My water bills can be extremely low...like $8--$13 a month...and that lowers my sewage bill.
    Electricity:
Unplug every thing not in use. I have to "unplug" the stove at the breaker box, but that's no problem. It's within easy reach. I leave it off till I need it and then turn it off again at the breaker box when I'm finished with the stove. I'm thinking about turning the whole breaker box off for a couple of hours everyday and see if that lowers my bill anymore. When I first started unplugging things, it shaved 76% off my electricity bill. I tried to find more things to unplug or turn off and only leave one light on at a time...wherever I was in the house. That took another 11% off the bill. I'm on a program now where all my electric bills are $63, and if the amount is more, I don't have to pay it...unless I go off the program. If that happens, I have to go back and pay all that accrued while I was only paying $63 a month. It's a county program.
    Gas:
Everything that uses gas I use as little as possible. The AC is set at 78 in the summer, and I don't turn it on in the day till the interior temperature is 80-81.° I turn it off at night, when the house is cooled down. If absolutely necessary, I'll use ceiling fan at night. Every day I turn on the AC, I'll use ceiling fans first. I do the same in the winter. I'll only turn the heat on when my nose gets cold, because no amount of layering up can solve that! I keep the thermostat at about 65 in the day time and 53-55 at night. At night, I'm under the covers, so the cold doesn't bother me. If I didn't have a cat, I'd turn it lower.
    Trash pick up:
No way to get it or recycle pick up lowered. I end up with VERY little rubbish to throw out. It's so little that I can often go 2--3 weeks without filling up a trash can, so I don't take it out. As long as the smell is contained, it's fine. Then, when there's enough to fill the trash can, I take it out. I've checked though. The bill is the same no matter how little I use it.
That's about all my tips on keeping utilities low. There are a couple more but I believe I may have already written a book here!
Love to you both you and Paul, and Dixie Bell and Loris, too! ❤

This would be great at holiday time, when we are using our oven for so many dishes. This way it can cook while we are getting other dishes ready and have a nice loaf of hot homemade bread to serve our families! Great idea!

I have a recipe for dinner rolls in the crockpot I’m going to try. For saving energy I keep my AC at 80 until 9 p.m. when my kwh cost goes down, then I run the AC at 78 until bedtime. I use fans to circulate the air. It’s in the 104 to 111 degrees range outside this week so 80 degrees inside feels cool. I use my crockpot for most of my cooking since it uses the least energy. If I use the oven I cook several things at once. I turn off all the lights except where I’m sitting; I’ve turned down my water heater temp and unplug everything possible to reduce phantom energy use. I wash clothes in cold water and line dry. Winters are mild here, it’s the summers that are brutal and where I need to try to conserve the most. I try to play a game to reduce my electric bill by 5% from the previous month.

That is awesome. I've been making cornbread in the crockpot for years but I would not have trusted making regular bread in the crockpot. I might use the crockpot to proof all loaves. My mind is racing, I'm thinking crockpot cinnamon rolls 🤯. Would you consider making them? Thank you for experimenting on our behalf.

You should look into no knead bread, it takes time not energy but it only uses 1/4 teaspoon of yeast per loaf. I do this for bread, rolls, baquettes, pizza dough etc. You just mix and let it sit for 18 hours or so, sometimes less in summer and it's done.

I make English Muffin bread in the microwave. Takes 6 1/2 min each glass loaf pan. I slice with an electric bread knife. It is best tasting toasted. The recipe makes 2 loaves, so you have to have two glass loaf pans. Been making this for years. It is my sister's recipe. Will try your crock pot bread. I make farina in the crock pot and heat portions in micro wave. I also try to do baked beans in crock pot. I was getting all different beans from the free table. They came from the food bank. So far all the different beans cook up tasting great. Also did pinto beans in the crock pot and added to my chili. They tasted as good as the canned kidney beans. I keep experimenting to use the free commodities. Going to try making yogurt in the crock pot.

I will have to try crockpot bread! I looked at a few recipes and saw that you can even put it in a loaf pan and put that pan in your crockpot. My frugal energy saving trick is along the same lines. Since finding out that our 'peak hours' for power here are 3-7pm, I'm consciously using less power to cook dinner. Last night I baked zucchini muffins in my combo toaster oven/air fryer. I have to lower the temperature about 25 degrees since the heat source is closer to the food, but it bakes breads, cakes, egg dishes, and cookies great! I'm also using the microwave more instead of the electric stove top. And I'm hanging out MORE of our laundry to air dry. Even undies and socks dry great on a drying rack on the patio.

I can reuse the parchment paper one more time as I am just about out! We love it and we do the kneading by hand. Didn’t feel the need to broil the top. What a find. Carole

I learned how to make crockpot bread many years ago. Originally it was in a coffee can. I use a loaf pan now so I can make a sandwich with it.
I use my toaster oven, crock pot or instant pot whenever possible. Our oven is electric, and uses a lot of electricity. I also use ceiling fans instead of air conditioning whenever possible.

I think it would also make great garlic or cheesy bread, wonderful to serve with soups, stews, stuffed cabbage, etc. You could use it to make multiple appetizers for holidays. To save money we make many things from scratch, being creative with what is coming from our garden, definitely not running air as low as before, and trying to run errands more efficiently to save on gas.
