    Wellcome back Olha! It is so good to watch you working again on the Confederacy ...

    The turn, aft, across the steeply rising floors as the planks turn onto the fairwater of the sternpost's deadwood, wants careful attention. As you demonstrate here. They can also "want" to reverse the taper the slightest bit, and this is a pain to watch and approach. The four-butt step of the planking is just exquisite.

    The preparatory work for planking that you did makes sense in this video. Thank you very much! We can feel that Imbir is well with you and happy )))

      Yes, this is a very boring process, but it is also very important for planking. But for some reason, most modelers, especially beginners, neglect to make markings. Unfortunately, mistakenly believing that everything will be done by eye, just to start gluing the planks faster...

    Wow! When I first started viewing this, the lines drawn and planks laid were so perfect, I thought it was a CGI video

    Somehow, this particular video reminds me the great movie "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs", the scene with the trapper in a coach. 🙂
    Great job, though, as usual!

    Just curious. With the glue you are using how long until you can remove the clamps?

    Excellent hull planking. What kind of wood are you using in planking? Are the planks laser cut? Do you paint the side of rhe planks or are they laser burn? Thanks.

      This is Castello Boxwood. As far as I remember, I show in detail how to prepare the planks in episode #5. What caulking paint I used and how to cut them of uniform thickness without a planer...

    Don’t get me wrong but it’s nice to see that a pro can make a mistake and have to rip out a newly laid plank. Was that isopropyl alcohol you were using with the heat?
    I also noticed that you never carve a rabbit in the keel. Model Shipways kits include this step and I regret doing so, especially considering that the hull will be coppered anyway. I’m also considering adding bass filler blocks between frames on my Constitution model; I can see the benefit. Thanks again as always and stay safe in your travels. I just got back from a cruise on the lower Danube and the rains have made a real mess in that part of Europe.

      Tearing off planks is a part of planking. On such a large and long hull, this is not surprising. I just use water so as not to burn the hull through the thin strip...
      Rabbet - This is necessary on real ships, or if you are building on real frames with partial planking. And if your model is on the bulcheads and the end result will be the same, why add more work to yourself. In addition, it will be much easier for you to first perfectly sand the planking, and then install the backbone...

    Amazing. How many weeks did that planking take you?

    • @OlhaBatchvarov

      This part was done during last winter. Considering that I need to clamp each row strake at least 10 hours. I can make the planking only when the humidity in the workshop is 35-40%, that is, during the heating season. Hoping to finish it this winter...

    Why did you leave that space on the starboard side un-planked?

    Ольга, заметил прокрашенные торцы реек, это вы сами красите для придания так скажем контура шва или это просто такие рейки?

    I have been looking forward to your resumption of work on Confederacy. I am working on my own ship project and have been following your technique to advance my own skill. Your videos help a lot.
    A question: how thick are the planks you are placing on the lower hull?

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  Місяць тому +1

      Thank you very much!
      I am glad that my videos were useful to you!
      P.S. I don't remember anymore, because I made this part of the olanking in the winter, and now I am in Ukraine, I don't have the opportunity to measure them now. Approximately 1,2-1,5 mm. Text me this question again sometime before Christmas - I can measure them when I get home...

    • @MarkCorriston
      @MarkCorriston Місяць тому

      Thank you.
      Also (two more short questions) is this wood that came with the kit, and, what kind of wood are you using for this planking? I remember in one of your videos that you gathered up the kit wood and put it in a trash can, and then cut your own wood.
      I ask because I bought the Confederacy kit this summer, and have not opened it. I also recently acquired plans for Bon Homme Richard (but don't know when I will get to it). It is a build that might be quite similar to the HMS Serapis, which is the ship I am working on and using your techniques as much as I can.
      Please stay safe in Ukraine.
