Is there anyone who comes anywhere near as close to this guy these days. Peter was probably one of the greatest ad libbers I've ever seen. A true comic trailblazer that people are still trying to copy to this day ! It's such a tragedy we lost him so early !
Brilliant. "Old Spice..the height of sophistication"... we guys of a certain age thought that at the time. He could always point out the ridiculous. Love his humour.
Yea I used to think Old Spiece was the height of sophistication as well... Love that cheeky grin Mr. Cook has when he says his ambition is to shut Parky up.
RIP Sir Michael Parkinson (March 28, 1935 - August 16, 2023), aged 88 And RIP Peter Cook (November 17, 1937 - January 9, 1995), aged 57 You both will be remembered as legends.
Peter Cook was funny off and on stage. I heard someone say they had to tell him to shut up at dinner parties; everyone was laughing so much the food went cold.
Thankfully a lot of early private owners of VHS machines have come forward with some sketched that were thought lost... Bob Monkhouses private collection (which is VAST) I think will have some of them too. So there is hope! But it's astonishing to think of the BBC erasing master copies of cutting edge, historically important footage like Peter Cook/ Dudley Moores work. Unthinkable today!
Two Titans... Masters of their respective crafts. "I thought old spice was the height of sophistication until I saw the type of people who wore old spice"
I think Peter Cook and Keith Moon have a lot in common. Both effortlessly talented at what they do, both driven to an early death through drink, and similar senses of humour. Just my thoughts anyway. Both eccentric Englishmen that add to the rich cultural tapestry of this little island off the coast of Europe.
peter cook.......brilliant. sad to realise the decline in overall british comedy over the years. compare russell brand to peter cook and it makes me want to cry. fortunately, i can watch this and laugh instead. thanks for posting this mrpraline. ( im now off to watch the "alan latchley football manager" interview with clive james. thank heavens for youtube ).
The Lyndon Johnson Quote has been misquoted as being invented by Liam Gallagher, therefore getting Liam into the top ten of wits, Sacriledge... Peter Cook Noe what he says, that is wit...
I'm quite happy about this fact (being a chap) but it's remarkable how bad Peter Cook started looking not long after this, due to alcoholism. Real shame, because he was such a brilliant... genius really.
Sometimes it's sons of bitches who age badly, and they drink. Mind you, people who neglect themselves use it to cope with the trauma of their earliest years.
@williamwilson666 I think most of the pieces are available in 'Tragically, I Was An Only Twin.' If you do pick up a copy, make sure to intone it in a sort of nasally E.L. Wisty voice, otherwise it doesn't really get off the page.
You can tell from his voice actually. He's got great control, but during the more conversational moments you can hear the telltale "looseness" in his enunciation, the tendency to condense words a tiny bit or overemphasise s sounds slightly, consonants become more slippery and less important.
@StinkyKnobcheese Erasing material to reuse the film was common practice... it's unforgiveable in a sense, but it was part of the routine back then. I still hope that there are private collectors who taped the lost shows off of the television. Hopefully they're out there. He's a genius.
It's easy for those who only know Peter through "Derek and Clive" to completely under-estimate the wit and thoughtfulness of the man. Peter Cooke is not Clive. Clive is not Peter Cooke.
Apparently the great satirist of the 20th century, not sure of any better before that...I enjoyed most of the Derek and Clive sketches/skits...see his T shirt, The worst job........
I think to say that russel brand is representative of british comedy today is somewhat overplaying your point. There are thoughtful (and thought provoking) comedians today as well such as mitchel and webb, as well as some absolutely awful acts/programes.
@EmptyGlass99 'little island?'! Excluding the 4 large continental land masses, Great Britain is the 9th largest island in the world and Ireland is the 20th largest. If you are talking about tiny islands you ought to be saying the Isle of Wight or something.

Brilliant. "Old Spice..the height of sophistication"... we guys of a certain age thought that at the time. He could always point out the ridiculous. Love his humour.
I still wear it!! 😂
Dad always kept a bottle above the bathroom sink, bless him.
Incredible Peter Cook. We will never see his like again. He was really exactly the same form the age of 27 to 57!
You were definitely 1 of the Great Ones......passed at only 57, so very very young.
All bow down to.. The greatest comedian of them all
The funniest man who's ever lived
Yea I used to think Old Spiece was the height of sophistication as well...
Love that cheeky grin Mr. Cook has when he says his ambition is to shut Parky up.
^ ^ If this man had a flaw or a fault it was that he was just too honest.....but absoutely brilliant! VVxx
The presence of genius.
RIP Sir Michael Parkinson (March 28, 1935 - August 16, 2023), aged 88
And
RIP Peter Cook (November 17, 1937 - January 9, 1995), aged 57

Totally agree with earlier observation from sirmgoo. To see Peter being himself is very unusual.

this is so good, not just because of peter cook but also the audiece, who are not a whoopin and shouting, and carrying on like tits.
No one like Peter Cook, the Bruce Lee of comedy!
this guy is so explicitly honest about everything. . . and this is way before Howard Stern and new standards
Brilliant brilliant mind. But never found personal serenity.
Peter Cook is brilliant, I don't know how he does it
I guess his secret is not holding back. Saying what he thinks. The buggery story was hilarious. The BBC would censor that now.
He doesn’t, he died several years ago
arsehole
The much missed Peter Cook.
I think Peter Cook and Keith Moon have a lot in common. Both effortlessly talented at what they do, both driven to an early death through drink, and similar senses of humour. Just my thoughts anyway. Early death? ??? Cook??
he was 57 years old when he died. thats fairly young
Pete you fucking genius!!!!
I love his t-shirt!
peter cook.......brilliant. sad to realise the decline in overall british comedy over the years. compare russell brand to peter cook and it makes me want to cry. fortunately, i can watch this and laugh instead.

I think he looks like ' Wolfie' out of Citizen Smith, the comedy from the 1970s.
Kinda kwote one o' Pete's courtroom sketches, "Yes M'lud. I do know that barrister. She is a proven lawyer!"
I've always thought that too. He looked like him in the 60's especially.
What can you say ? Quality, I do miss good chat shows, Jonathan Ross look and learn , effortless
peter being peter. Hes just as funny as peter.I say almost if not nearly as good as mr cook himself.most unusual.
The Lyndon Johnson Quote has been misquoted as being invented by Liam Gallagher, therefore getting Liam into the top ten of wits, Sacriledge...
Peter Cook Noe what he says, that is wit...
My mum has nickname dud. Her❤😂🎉 friend was Peter cook
I'm quite happy about this fact (being a chap) but it's remarkable how bad Peter Cook started looking not long after this, due to alcoholism. Real shame, because he was such a brilliant... genius really.

Remember Mother, Derek and Clive? They were bang on the money about child abuse.

Unfortunately alcoholism can age you in later life at least 20 years looks wise
Look how far chat shows have fallen since then.
Old Spice the height of sophistication. LOL.
Until that 'Splash it on all over" campaign for Brut with Barry & Henry !

Wolfie smith
brilliance is sexy
I think Cook may have been slightly inebriated during this show. Both his eyes and his hesitant speech seem to indicate this.
You can tell from his voice actually. He's got great control, but during the more conversational moments you can hear the telltale "looseness" in his enunciation, the tendency to condense words a tiny bit or overemphasise s sounds slightly, consonants become more slippery and less important.
@@artemisvega8940 Was he really a Sodomite?
How is 39 here!! He is soooo handsome, damn genetics it is so unfair that men get better looking with every passing year :)
Oh I thought this was Cook talking about HAVING Parkinson's disease...
Once again genuflect: Peter was an honest genius!
@StinkyKnobcheese Erasing material to reuse the film was common practice... it's unforgiveable in a sense, but it was part of the routine back then. I still hope that there are private collectors who taped the lost shows off of the television. Hopefully they're out there. He's a genius.
Make a proper movie about em especially these years
There's people like that everywhere....just not flexing it on stage....
It's easy for those who only know Peter through "Derek and Clive" to completely under-estimate the wit and thoughtfulness of the man.
Peter Cooke is not Clive.
Clive is not Peter Cooke.
He is hunting Parkinson
yeah, i mean long before that kinda thing became popular
Apparently the great satirist of the 20th century, not sure of any better before that...I enjoyed most of the Derek and Clive sketches/skits...see his T shirt, The worst job........
I can't believe he's nearly forty in this clip - he looks barley twenty.
I used to go to school with barley twenty, lovely feller.
What has that got to do with anything?
I think to say that russel brand is representative of british comedy today is somewhat overplaying your point. There are thoughtful (and thought provoking) comedians today as well such as mitchel and webb, as well as some absolutely awful acts/programes.
Russel Brand is a self aggrandising twerp! Horrid.
Couple of ladies gossiping.
