    Dom in 2013: don't do curls in the squat rack.

      No, see this is for beginners. Doing curls in the squat rack is the most alpha way to do curls because nothing is more alpha than not giving a fuck, but you first have to look like an alpha to be an alpha.

    then a big guy came and curled the same weight doing the full range of motion
    i attempted to copy that and couldn't do 1 i had to go to 60 and felt so shitty that i could barely do 5 of those

    • @KillianDefaoite
      @KillianDefaoite 5 років тому +80

      @@imjustaplumber3661 It's the idea that in order to go from one place to another, you first need to cross half the distance. Then half of the remaining half. Then half of the remaining quarter, and so on. With a finite number of steps, you'll never reach your destination. Then how can we do it all the time? It seems we are able to make an infinite number of steps in a finite amount of time. Although we can resolve this "paradox" with modern mathematics, the notions of infinite sequences, convergence, etc did not exist back in Zeno's time, thus he had no good way of explaining this apparent violation of logic.

    • @shinjig
      @shinjig 9 років тому +51

      Paul Blakey What if some dumbass left 405 on the floor from deadlifting and didn't strip the bar. So you deadlifted it up to the power/squat rack and stripped the plates since it was suspended in mid air? You technically "re-rack"ed the weight.

    • @2003pblakey
      @2003pblakey 9 років тому +36

      shinjig Interesting point cause i did that before. I say yes. The douche left 315 on the floor and i picked it up and set it down on the low cross bar, then took the plates off. I really hate when people do that crap like their momma is there to clean up after them.

    • @FormulaKimball

    • @2003pblakey
      @2003pblakey 9 років тому +11

      MusicIsLife exactly! My point is clean up when you are done. Its rude to leave someone else to strip the weights because you are too lazy to reset the plates so the next person behind you dont have to. Think of that beginner guy. The last thing he needs is risk hurting himself on heavy plates that he is not ready for because some douche cant clean up after himself. My model is clean up your crap, and if you cannot do full ROM, then you have too much weight. Swallow your pride, drop the weight down, and do it right. Your body will benefit more from full ROM than some half ass reps with alot of weight. From one gym bro to another, take that small advise and watch your gains skyrocket💪!! Keep on lifting and drop the bs.

      Smith Machine=
      1. Artificially inflate how much weight you can use
      2. Use unnatural bar path and get no stabilization strength.
      3. Get some special "safety" that actually could be found in a normal power rack.
      Free barbell=
      1. Have to use less weight to learn movement properly and to stabilize.
      2. Healthier for body because you don't have such a fixed bar path,
      Which equipment is for the person who needs to inflate their ego, as you implied?

      James Brown
      OK let me start by explaining the video to you, as it is apparent that you and many others here are missing the point. Its a joke. Its is a video done for the sake of humor. When people employ humor one avenue is hyperbole or exaggerating the truth. The protagonist here is playing the part of a Jersey boy guido meat head. This is not a video meant to be taken seriously as a work out instructional. One of the exaggerations here was that "using the Smith at all" was un manly or a rookie mistake. You, James Brown, as well as others expressed the same feeling as real, not a joke. There is a grain of truth in everything this guy says, but its a grain not a mountain. I do not disagree with your argument about the superiority of free weights such as the bench press for strength conditioning and overall "health". I would agree that the only utility of the Smith is in bodybuilding programs and potentially for individuals with injuries. I take exception to those here including yourself who have proposed that this guy is not joking and there is really NO ROLE for the Smith whatsoever. If you truly believe that you are either ignorant or like the character in the video an insecure "guido" type who only does manly exercises, and as such u likely drive an obnoxiously loud and overly large truck as those two often go hand in hand. I do not recommend the Smith to anyone just starting out, and I believe it has pretty much 0 utility in power lifting or strength conditioning. If I had to chose only one, bench or smith, I would choose bench 100% of the time for the reasons you stated. I am not so worried about my image in the gym that I avoid using the smith because its "not hardcore enough". The smith for the very reason you stated actually isolates the primary muscles(pecs or delts) better then free weights where one's endurance is dictated by the strength of the accessory muscles and not the primary muscles...IE your rotaters will fail before your pecs do, something that wont happen on the Smith. That is why it has its role when the goal is building the most balanced physique for bodybuilding. I never do just the Smith I always combine it w free weights. I do not load the smith up with extra weight to look impressive as that defeats the very purpose I am using it for which is to work the target muscle to absolute fatigue. One other use for the smith is training through a rotater cuff injury, often times depending on the injury free bench or shoulder press is impossible yet light smiths can be done to prevent atrophy. There is a reason that you will find at least one smith machine in every single gym in the world that has a reasonable amount of equipment and most big gyms have several. I have lifted for 32 years now and never missed more then 3 weeks time at any stretch of that through Medical School residency, marriage, children a ruptured quad muscle and a ruptured bicep as well as every other run of the mill health issue. At the height of my strength I was dead lifting over 600 squatting over 500 and benching 405 all without any type of suit, yet the Smith is not too "un manly" for me to use it. I ruptured my bicep to an arm bar in a Jiu Jitsu finals match last Nov. After surgery the Ortho recommended no lifting at all six weeks, light lifting six to 12 weeks then start heavy lifting at 12 weeks. I was in the gym two days after surgery. I was curling with good form 60 pound dumbells in 8 weeks(two weeks after I was to start "light lifting"). I am 48 years old, I think most would call me hard core.

    This is the core message. Everyone is in the gym focusing on their own routines, if they spend time worrying about what some beginner is doing then they are losers and you should dismiss them immediately. Just go in, do your thing, and get out. If you are consistent you'll outlift all of the instagram influencers within 2-3 months.

    Theres no argument here. 22 years of lifting experience. 5lb can mean the difference between a successful lift and a failed lift. 5lb can make deference in getting a set weight x 12 vs x 13/14. Ive been there. Ive seen tons of others there over the years. To simply dismiss 5lb as completely insignificant or to look down on someone that puts that on the bar or stake is the most "bro" thing i ever heard.

    I kind of disagree with the 2.5 lb plate point. I don't want to use 5 lb plates to add 10 lb to whatever weight I have on the bar all the time. Sometimes I feel more comfortable adding just 5 lb with 2.5 lb plates. With my bench press, even small weight changes make a difference in whether I can lift the damn bar or whether it's just going to sit on my chest as I struggle to push it off. I don't use the little plates for the other two big lifts.
