I was only a few decades ago that people still had out houses, no electricity, or running water in their homes. Appalachia was full of people who lived like this. Mostly really good people though.
My dad grew up in rural eastern Pennsylvania, and his house didn't have a phone or indoor plumbing. Not sure if he had electricity until he was older. No family car until he entered the Navy in the 1930s.
@@RadCenter My mom grew up in rural western PA, born in '59, and her grandparents didn't get indoor plumbing until the early 60's. They had electricity when my grandmother (born in the '30's) was a girl, though.
I was born in 1964 in Eastern Kentucky, just 40 miles from Butcher Hollow. My mother was the youngest of 12 siblings (9 girls and 3 boys) and this was her life as well, just like Loretta Lynn's life. My Grandfather also worked for the Van Lear coal mine and died of black lung before I was born. It was a hard life, but the grit & resolve of the folks in Appalachia is something of legends. They're the members of an amazing culture, like nowhere else you'll ever find.
I was born and raised in Berea, KY. Not eastern, but I’ve been there and around the people throughout my life. We share many of their ways too! They’re good, hard working people!
RedHeart, my mother's maiden name was Miracle from Harlan County. She had many relatives in Berea but I can't remember if they were from the Miracle or Howard side of her family!
My maternal Grandfather was Ulysses Grant York and he was a minister in addition to being a coal miner. My maternal Grandmother was Georgia Ann York (nee Varney) and they resided in Louisa Kentucky, the county seat for Lawrence County.
You should watch the movie, Coal Miners Daughter (Best Picture Oscar) starring Sissy Spacek who won the Oscar for Best Actress. Also, the drummer (Levon Helm) from the video you watched of The Band and The Staple Singers, "The Weight", played her father.
Loretta Lynn was later an R&B singer for only once when she did “Is This Love, Must Be Love” featuring Frankie Bleu, and it was from the soundtrack to “The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh”. The song was produced and arranged by the legendary Thom Bell who did the Delfonics, the Stylistics, The Spinners and countless others.
She's amazing!!! I recommend the movie of the same name....Loretta Lynn was consulted and had input. She was very supportive of the project! A strong, talented and unique woman indeed!
This song is the musical true story of her childhood. She is an old school hillbilly from eastern Kentucky who grew up dirt poor and made it to stardom. A true rags to riches story or a true Cinderella story. She now has a mansion and a huge estate not too far from Nashville but spends most of her time hanging out in her cabin she had built on her estate that is a replica of the cabin she grew up in. This woman knows what hard times and hard work is. At 89 years old is still very down to earth and humble. She never went "hollywood".
I met this beautiful lady at county fair .I was standing by her bus when she came out to go perform..she stepped off her bus.. smiled and said hi I told her I was there to see. Her. She thanked me and signed my program.she performed on stage ..barefooted ..said she was a country girl..those darn hi heels was a Killin her feet.yal'all Don't mind.shes a class act.down to earth as they make em.i visited Hurricane Mills where she lives.its a trip worth making if you like her.the movie is amazing.thank you Sunshine for reaction to One of Countrys legends
Loretta wrote songs about her life, and wrote songs from a womans point of view about men and spoke her truth. She then had 5 or so songs (I think more) BANNED from the radio, lol. I listened to mom's country music as a kid...and I remember "One's On The Way". And Loretta didn't put up with women after her man...."You Ain't Woman Enough" and "Fist City", lol. Singing to a woman flirting with her husband and Loretta would take her to "fist city". Epic! Not long before Loretta died, and she had a replica of her childhood home built...she sat on the porch of it in a big ole dress she would wear, and did a spoken word version of 'Coal Miners Daughter". It's worth a watch, her toward the end of her life, her alone, and just speaking the words of the song.
I loved your reaction to this video it was absolutely awesome and the smile you had on your face everytime I hear this song I get a big smile to because even the sad parts in the song she made them happy Parts instead of making them sad
Great song. Did you know that Loretta Lynn sang a duet with Frankie Bleu with a beautiful soulful ballad “Is This Love, Must Be Love”. That song was from the soundtrack to an forgotten basketball film “The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh” from 1979. So that’s why Loretta Lynn went from a successful country artist to an R&B singer, but that didn’t last that long. She went back to do country music, and she did.
Loretta Lynn is 90 now, still writing songs, and released her 26th solo album STILL WOMAN ENOUGH, featuring this song as a recitation, where she tells the story like a poem instead of singing it. The album peaked at #9 on Billboard US Country chart and #3 on Billboard UK Country chart. A 60 year career with no signs of stopping, even at 90 years old.
Loretta Lynn always wrote songs that was from her life experiences like this one was about her life coming up and then there is Fist City, You Ain't Women Enough To Take My Man and The Pill and so many other great songs
Jayy the movie Coal Miners Daughter is a must- It shows all she just sang about and more- Funny moments, drama,etc.. Brilliantly done movie!!Please trust- ❤️💗👍✌️
She did a lot of duets with Conway Twitty. He has some great songs, and if you like a deep, baritone, male voice he is your guy. Try "Take the Ribbon From Your Hair", "You've Never Been This Far Before" and "Hello Darlin". You would also like Loretta's "One's on the Way".
Another song you should hear is Dolly Parton's "In The Good Old Days (When Times Were Bad)." It tells a similar (true) story of growing up in rural poverty.
You are spot on with your assessment on this song. My granny and grand dad helped raise me and my brother. He was a coal miner who passed away from coal miners black lung. I just posted a cover of this song that was requested at one of my shows. And it so true I know first hand. Love and family your roots is better than money although that is good too. 😆 Have a good night.
White man here and I have to say I love you angel you are as amazing AZ I loved. Like I love you the angel of America I woild love you show you off to the world in the green dress she wore. Cause you deserve to know you are an angel.
Loretta was a trailblazer, she has an incredible voice and spirit. Check out the songs that got her "in trouble": The Pill Rated X Also, some other great ones: You Ain't Woman Enough (to take My Man) One's on the Way Hey Loretta
Hey Jayy!! Loretta Lynn is a force to be reckoned with! She paved the way for some of todays country music queens!! Love your channel and reactions! Reba McEntire is another "queen" you should check out! Much Love from Texas
@@cnatview It's not "invisible". It's a palpable quality, a.depth of emotion that communicates the raw emotion of the singer's experience. The kids today don't make music, they remix what their elders created. It's soulless, clinically perfected sonic waves, but it's not music. Is there any pop culture singer today who can make your heart ache and bring tears to your eyes?
She had so many great songs, she was quite the songwriter but not known for it. The movie Coal Miner's Daughter starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones is worth watching, a true story of her life.
I love to see reactions to honest, heartfelt performances. Yours to this song was better than mine when it first came out. Of course, not everyone can be a Loretta, but it still shows we are all the same...we have the same needs, wants, emotions. We love and want (need) to be loved. Thank you for this.
She is one great country singer. Check out her other songs too if you have not. You are not woman enough, She and Conway Twitty also worked together, very well. After the fire is gone, And Conway is also my fav, love his It is Only Make Believe.
Her youngest sibling, Crystal Gayle Lynn was born in 1932 and Gayle in 1951) there is a 19 years age difference. Crystal had a few hits, one gr8 one is: "Don't it Make my Brown Eyes Blue".. Crystal has been known for her long hair, which is so long it reaches the floor.
Always love to hear the First Lady of Country Music, Ms. Loretta Lynn! Her story is an amazing one, for sure - you should definitely react to the movie on your other channel + look up many of her other hits, as well as those by one of her best friends, Ms. Patsy Cline.
she passed 2 days ago, so of course the media has been remembering her with clips of her interviews, over the years... one in particular, touched my heart.. the interviewer was asking her specifically about the origin of this song.. she told the interviewer that she wished her daddy had lived to hear that song about him, but she said, she knew one day she'd be back with him & then she would sing that song to him ❤️ I thought that was so sweet
There was a lot of talent coming from coal country. Loretta, sister Crystal Gayle, cousin Patty Loveless, Friend Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton and may more. They have a lot of songs that depict events in their lives.
Now you should watch the movie "Coal Miners Daughter" released in 1980 starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones. Sissy Spacek won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and the movie also a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. It's the true story of country music singer Loretta Lynn from her early teen years in a poor family and getting married at 15 (and having 4 kids by the age of 19) to her rise as one of the most influential country musicians.
Have you watched the movie about her life called Coal Miner's Daughter? It's one of my favorites. And btw Sissy Spacek that plays Loretta sang all the songs herself. She sounds just like Loretta!
The most amazing part. Is every word she sings about it truth. And her actual life
white privilege...i grew up logging at 14 years old
This is Loretta's life story, she married at 13yo there is a movie called the same. A must watch. Loretta Lynn is the Queen of country music.
super movie. Cissie Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones rock that film.
Such a great movie!
Such a great film... one big favorite of my family
And Levon Helm, drummer of The Band ("The Weight"), portrayed her father. His performance is beautiful.
Yes you're right, a must watch. And her book by the same title is a must read.
Some of her siblings didn't meet her until they were in their teens. This included Crystal Gayle, also a lovely singer.
I was only a few decades ago that people still had out houses, no electricity, or running water in their homes. Appalachia was full of people who lived like this. Mostly really good people though.

You should listen to Patsy Cline one day, great voice and she was Lorettas best friend.
Yes Fall to Pieces was one of my favorites by Patsy Cline.
This song is a true story of her childhood.
Another country singer is Loretta Lynn's sister, Crystal Gayle. "Don't you make my brown eyes blue" is one of her hits.
she is boring she n0t LORETTA LYNN l0l
I'm from where Kentucky too and am also a coal miners daughter. My cousin play her daughter in the movie coal miners daughter.

My parents are from Harlan County, Mean Max...good people, hard living and hard working. Several men in our family died of black lung.
I enjoyed this comment. In deed an amazing culture like nowhere else.Proud to call Kentucky my home.

I saw her in concert in Lexington Ky in 1978. The entire population of Butcher Holler Kentucky showed up that night.
I’m Jealous
The movie of her life is amazing!!

One of my all time fave movies. Fell in love with Tommy Lee Jones then, too. ;)
It didn't win best picture.. it was nominated for best picture but it didn't win.. only best actress
This is real country. Loretta Lynn is country royalty right beside her sister Crystal Gayle and Dolly Parton. BTW this is a true story.
Back then singers sang with so much emotion you could actually feel what they were going through .
Loretta Lynn, is the real deal! I had the opportunity to see her live, well into her years and she still sounded great.
She's amazing!!! I recommend the movie of the same name....Loretta Lynn was consulted and had input. She was very supportive of the project! A strong, talented and unique woman indeed!
Some people do not appreciate how hard life was for alot of folks back then!!! 🙏🙏❤️

Loretta lived in our stereo speakers when I grew up.... my father made sure of that. Thanks for your reaction, Jayy..... Take care and be well. Peace.

I think instead of Take the Ribbon from your hair, you are thinking of Help Me Make it through the night.
Loretta and Conway's song, "Your the reason our kids are ugly". They were a dynamic country artist duo.. way to many to mention.. lol
You should listen to Loretta Lynn fist city
Hey Jayy, if want to see another side of Loretta Lynn, check out "Fist City" and "You Ain't Woman Enough".
YES SUCH A VOICE AND THE MOVIE IS AWESOME SHE REALLY EARNED WHAT SHE HAS ACHIEVED...
Another song you should hear is Dolly Parton's "In The Good Old Days (When Times Were Bad)." It tells a similar (true) story of growing up in rural poverty.

Her younger sister Crystal Gayle is a singer also. She is famous for "Don't It make Your Brown Eyes Blue".
A pure country classic with a movie titled about her!
This is real country music, not the junk they call country today.
i love this song... so proud of you for feeling it too!
The artists back then were real. They actually lived what they "sang" about...unlike the artists these days...no offense! 👍🏻
I agree Randy.... that is what gives them that invisible quality.

Values are priceless 😌 Tks for reacting to another classic from a legend. She has mentored most of the young female country artists.💕
She had so many great songs, she was quite the songwriter but not known for it. The movie Coal Miner's Daughter starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones is worth watching, a true story of her life.
This is true. In the 70s they made a film called "Coal Miner's Daughter." It's great.
More greats from Loretta: Fist City, You Ain’t Woman Enough, Rated X
Check out her sister, Crystal Gayle, who had a huge hit with "Don't It Make Your Brown Eyes Blue" ua-cam.com/video/C9lz_yzrGZw/v-deo.html
They don't make'm like that anymore. Same lifestyle most of my family had during the depression up into the 70s.

Harland Howard said country music was "three cords and the truth"...Loretta is the epitome of that statement...God bless Loretta and you as well jayy
That woman had an incredible voice and the song had such meaning.
Loretta’s songwriting is Unbelievable! Always true events and attacking controversial issues.
She is one great country singer. Check out her other songs too if you have not. You are not woman enough, She and Conway Twitty also worked together, very well.

I grew up in the Smoky and and she and her sisters did local commercials back in the 70s for Crisco.
They made a Movie after this song and her life. Queen of Country
