I particulary remember game 6 of the bruins panthers series being so intense. Everytime boston scored, florida answered. They were the definition of “never give up” hockey. After such an insane first round, and then to dominate the leafs and hurricanes, it makes you think how close the cup finals would actually be if tkachuk and ekblad were healthy…
It’s a huge compliment to my Knights that they’re all over the bottom of the board, they just left no doubt and no doubt is boring. Keep up the amazing content man!
As a Bruins fan, it was fate. The second McAvoy deflected Montour's tying goal, and when Bob magically saved Pasta's shot in ot with the butt end of his stick, I knew it was over.
Montour's goal sucked all the confidence and belief out of the B's. Boston was as scared shitless in OT as they were all series, there was no way they were winning it
in 2017 as a caps fan when i saw Ovi in game 7 vs the pens have a shot saved by Fluery off the butt end of his stick as well that really should've gone in it sent me spiraling again... only to be recovered the next year. During that moment though i really did wish for death.
As a Panthers fan I will always hold this run close to my heart. It was a magical run and it’s cool to see that the model agrees. It ended in disappointment but a part of me felt that Vegas was gonna win the Cup, and I don‘t think the Cats are gonna do it again, but I will always look back and cherish what it was and how I felt as it happened. Let’s Go Panthers!
I'm a Knights fan and I was thoroughly enjoying your run. Watching Boston flame out and The Leafs eat a trough full of shit made feel all tingly inside. It sucks it had to end like it did for you. I experienced that back in 2018. You'll be alright tho. Let's meet up in the finals again next year.
I love these videos. If I may come with suggestion for a great series to cover, the series between Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins in 2001 was epic. Jagr and Hasek’s last games with their most iconic clubs.
As an objective hockey fan, I can see why Vegas had, what most people seem to say, a "boring" postseason. They were the top seed in the western conference with no 30-goal scorers and reletively unknown goaltenders. Most of their wins were in regulation and were not really that close. I can understand why other fans found the finals (and their run in general) boring... However, as a Golden Knights fan all I can say is: Doesn't matter. Won the Cup.
@@PinholesGrahampound for pound, I’d give it to the oilers series. Edmonton was the sexy cup pick, and we were still able to weather their power play and a goalie change. Once we beat them we were the bets team left.
@@PinholesGraham Best series was the Cup in terms of enjoyment. So many stories to be told and that 9 goals final game is just an absolute statement for all the Cup run. However, in terms of which series was the most exhilerating to win, it would have to be the Oilers. A lot of drama, games would be an exchange of complete blowouts and as a Vegas fan, we were on our toes every single time Connor McDavid or Leon Draisatl would be in the offensive zone or when we'd get a penalty as you never know if we'll be able to hold on.
as a Vegas fan gotta say i actually don't mind how low our series were mostly because all them are low because they were pretty one sided in terms of on ice, and since we won all our series it means the one sided stuff went for Vegas so yea
This is one of those videos where I feel like just hitting like doesn't capture the love I have for it well enough, and I don't know how I could express it, but boy if this just isn't phenomenal work and something I'll probably return to once we get close to the next nhl playoffs

Even as a Bruins fan, I give respect to the Cats for going as far as they did. They wanted it the most out of any team in the league, they just ran into a western brick wall dressed in black and gold. Even in a disappointing year overall, it was still fun seeing an underdog get to the final, a brand new team upset the cup champs, and of course, seeing the smiles on people like Stone and Marchessault’s faces as they lifted the cup
14:52 As a Leafs fan, can confirm that it was an awesome feeling, especially winning the series in OT after losing 4 consecutive series-clinching OT games. It honestly didn't hurt that much for me when they lost the series to Florida.
Maybe an overall meh playoffs, but as someone who loves the Panthers, it was definitely one of my favorite to watch ever (since I was mostly watching the Panthers). As bad as the final was (especially for me lol), the rest of it was pure joy. I love how all 3 Panthers winning series' were the top 3. What a ride it was!
This gives me an idea, a video about what you think are the best playoff series of the past 10 years *(best series of each year)* and then make a ranking of those best 10. To explain, Boston vs Panthers is a fan favorite series (mine too), that series could go into the top 10 and work back to 2013. This is just a content suggestion and understandably this will take some effort. You don’t have to do it if you don’t want to, but I think it would be a cool idea.
Another Pinholes banger, I'm still sad about that Florida series and my canes losing but this year was a pretty decent year in the grand scheme of things
'What an awesome feeling it must have been'. I can't even begin to describe it. Absolutely unbelievable. Even my Sens fan friend whose house I was round to watch it was celebrating a little with me.

The Cats vs Canes is absolutely the best series of the 2023 despite being a sweep. That is the only downside, and even then it had so much OT it was practically as much ice time as a 5 or 6 game series. Absolutely amazing.
If Florida wasn't trashed with injuries by the time they got to the final and that series was competitive, this years playoffs would've been spectacular imo. I feel like the shitty result in the cup final is what puts the whole playoffs in "meh" territory.
Dang it, I should have finished this. I had the spreadsheet and everything, I just got really salty after the Rangers were eliminated. Stupid emotions making me care about a team that I want to succeed. I did make one change from what you did, I made series further in the playoffs worth more value. I took the # of games modifier and used 4^-4 for the 1st round, 4^-3.6666 for 2nd, 4^-3.3333 for the CF, and 4^-3 for the Finals. That way a 7 game series in the 1st round would have the same weight as a 6 game finals but would still have more weight than a 6 game series in either round.
I'll remember this playoff year as the time when the actual best teams overall throughout this season (Vegas for sure) showed their true powers. The teams who made deep runs or otherwise played a consistent game had great sustained play to close out the regular season and turned up a level once the playoff pressure came. That includes Toronto actually, as much as it stings to lose in 5 games. They played well and ran into a hot goalie, which just tends to happen in hockey.
Would love to see more of these in the future like 2022, 2021 and more. Wonder if we will ever come across a true best stanley cup final playoff series at number 1
I like this method of ranking things because Carolina vs Florida was a great series and a lot of people would just knock it way down just because it's a sweep
I never fast forward your vids. But I saw this and genuinely wanted to see the score and rank for the bruins/cats series and was shocked but in a good way. It felt like the best series in the playoffs but only because the underdog won.
The Florida Panthers are my least favourite team, they have been since the mid 2000's, but the show they put on this year was an absolute inspiration. I even went and picked up a Cats jersey after the Leafs series, something I would never have dreamed of doing only 3 weeks earlier. I still hate em, but goddamn if I wasn't rooting hard for them to win it all in the Final. Welcome back to relevance Florida, it's been a while, I can't wait to despise you even more next year :)
I went to Game 2 of Vegas-Edmonton (Bruins fan). I remember cheering on Butch pregame in my Bruins gear. We stayed until the Knights were down 0-5 after 2. We went back to our hotel, NYNY, to continue to get trashed and don't remember the rest of the night.
I am a die hard Golden Knights fan and I’ll admit that this wasn’t a good playoff year, after that loss at home to Winnipeg it seemed Like everyone on the team decided to kill everyone as revenge for losing so bad
Don't feel bad, the refs were told who was to win. If you watched ANY series, it was clear game after game. If there's talk about a team moving, they'll make the finals and usually win. This is the first time that team didn't win and it's only because it was against Bettman's team.
@@jeffreycairns767 talk of a team moving? You’re referring to the Florida panthers, who went under new ownership within the last ten years and have been extremely profitable the last five? Fantastic video! If you don’t mind me asking, is there a way we can see the excel sheet or google sheets you used for this video? I was thinking of making something like this for myself for 2024’s playoffs
That series against the Oilers felt like a close match and a lopsided match at the same time. Despite Game 3 being ranked the "best" game in the entire playoffs, my favorite game from that series has to be Game 1. After being outplayed for 40 minutes, the Kings clawed back with Kempe scoring two and the captain tying the game with 17 seconds left. What made it the best for me was the disallowed high stick goal. That goal zapped all of the energy out of me and I closed off the game without thinking about the possibility of it being a no goal. When I saw on twitter it was a no goal, I never felt so happy to continue watching more Kings hockey, especially when Iafallo scores the game winner. Games 2 and 5 was all Oilers while Games 1 and 3 was the Kings defying the odds and clutching the game. I don't wanna talk about Game 4, although that first period was absolutely perfect. Game 6 felt like a Game 7, so many emotions. LA kept on fighting and they tied the game 3 times but they couldn't catch up with the Oilers. When Danault scored that shorthanded goal, I was jumping up and down, I never felt so happy and filled with so much hope by a goal that I witnessed in person. Although it ended in 6, it should have been a 7 game series. The Kings have improved a lot since the rebuild finished and I have a good feeling that LA will win a series very soon. Hopefully they can solve the Edmonton problem just like how Vegas did.
aves vs kraken was the most entertaining series i’ve ever watched easily. what kind of algorithm would put vgk vs jets 5 game blowout as higher than that
That canes-fla series was one of the most frustrating and demoralizing things to watch as a canes fan. A couple more bounces and it could've gone the other way.
question- where in the stanley cup finals ranking does this years finals stand? where does florida stand in the ranking of best runner-ups? don't need a whole explanation necessarily (unless you want to), just wondering where they land
i’m confused, Game 5 with NYI/CAR never had a 3 goal differential, was just curious is this is the model or a graphic issue? Was surprised to see that series in the top 5 but the fact that Isles defense / goaltending keeps games close but watching it felt like they were outplayed most of the series especially when they were ahead! fantastic work on the video as always.
And against Bettman's team, go figure. I'm not a Florida fan by any means but the fact that the Oanthers got away with murder for every series but against Vegas, they called EVERYTHING. No one will convince me it's not rigged. Unfortunately the refs get the hate but they're just doing what they were told to do. It gets worse every year.
@@PinholesGraham Would absolutely love to see past playoffs. I’ve watched nearly every single playoff game from 2021-2024 and I’ve always had my own ranking. Really cool to see someone make a video using stats. Also if it were me I would decrease the weight of xGF% and series length. And I think a perfect example which you even agreed with yourself was the overrated ranking of the Boston - St.Louis SCF. Series length is pretty self-explanatory, quality is better than quantity, although that does seem to even out as you showed in this video with the top 2 series going to only 5 and 4 games. More importantly though, in the 2019 SCF there were 4-1 and 5-1 games that were scored higher just because the xGF% was close, and I really don’t think that matters, especially when the score is so far apart. Nobody is watching a 4-1 game thinking “well at least the chances are even.” I think people (including myself) care much more about the closeness of score and total scoring chances. Another example in this video was the Colorado-Seattle series, which as you said looked sexy, it was close in score, had lots of scoring chances, and had lots of goals, and as I remember was absolutely incredible to watch, yet it gets weighed down just because Colorado dominated play, which I genuinely don’t think anybody remembers or even cares about. But all in all great videos I love seeing statistical videos for hockey topics that people love to debate. Would absolutely love to see this again for 2024 and even 2022 and 2021. I think if you didn’t like 2023 I am very curious to know what you think of 2024, which I think has been way more boring than the past 3 years. Love the music too makes these videos even more awesome.
I know you said this years final would rank 16th on your finals list, but one more thing has me curious: where would Vegas and Floridas runs rank amongst the other winners and loser of the past 15 years?
maybe it’s because I missed the playoffs after the first round this year, but I thought this year’s playoffs were pretty good actually. Florida’s Cinderella story in the east paired up pretty well against Vegas’s quest for blood in the west, and even if the cup finals is rather meh (even if I find it satisfactory due to the team I like winning), I still think this year had some great hockey games played in it. pardon me going to go get a vgk tattoo on my thigh for the meme
No wonder you think it was a good playoffs...the first round was the only good round 😂 If you look at the graph, you can see how the series scores get absolutely cratered after the Round One.
I'm surprised the Dallas vs Minnesota series was that low. I thought that was a entertaining series. I agree with Dallas - Seattle series and the Dallas - Vegas series being pretty boring
It's a shame that all the Stars games ranked so low on the list, but I guess it isn't without due reasoning. The Stars either blew out their opponent, got blown out, and the only series that was close (I.E. Seattle) was fraught with blowouts from game to game. Sucks, but we are all slaves to the machine.
@@jeffreycairns767 yes. Stomped. As in, the most dominant run since the 2012 kings. As in, a plus 31 goal differential. As in, controlled over 60% of all even strength play every series. Bitch about how the “refs” and “Bettman” rigged it as though Vegas didn’t have half a dozen games with five even strength goals. They were way better than whatever sorry team you root for.
@thomasibach234 I'm not saying that they're bad, I'm saying that if Florida got nailed for all their dirty shit starting in Boston, they would never have made it to the finals or if Florida got away with the same shit they did against every other team they faced, Vegas wouldn't have won, as all their main players would have been taken out dirty style. No, ofcourse there's one set of rules one day and another the next.
Okay ngl as a Leafs fan this tier list shows me exactly why this scoring method is a fun idea but completely worthless in actual practice. The Tampa series was so much better than that dogshit Florida series. The Leafs were weak, soft, didn't play remotely near their potential given the roster they had and sat by and did nothing when they watched Florida try to injure player after player including a ROOKIE. The stars didn't show up, AGAIN, they played their worst game in game 3 when the series was actually on the line - once you're down 3-0 it's a wash - and compared to the gutsy efforts they put forward in games 3 and 4 especially against Tampa, that series was brutal to watch. Maybe the numbers reflect on it favorably, but dear god that was not fun to watch. At all.
I am a Devils fan, will always be for as long as Iive. That Rangers series was amazing, and if i’m being honest was the greatest Devils series since the last Hudson River Battle. The thing i disliked the most and I don’t know if anyone can agree was the commentating on ESPN. It. was. awful. They couldn’t even pronounce some of their names, and from what i heard because i didn’t watch the rest of Game 6 they were laughing at the Devils..? All in all, it never seemed like they cared about the Devils at all. It was so upsetting and yet so funny how they were all one-sided at the Rangers. Still, I loved how they were shut up as the Devils won in 7. Continuing on the main path of the playoffs, although it was unfortunate in the second round, this young Devils team learned so much about the playoffs, especially Schmid and Vitek (who were AMAZING the entire season!) and I wouldn’t be shocked if they are with the Prince of Wales next season. Great video as always Pinholes, keep it up!
When the greatest series maybe ever and the closet sweep in history aren’t has good as a forgettable five game series that most would probably of said was a route if asked you know it was a weird year.
I resigned myself to knowing Toronto was getting kicked out in the second round. But, man, the way they played in that series against Florida.. It wasn't Toronto playing. It couldn't was have been. They were a team with purpose and determination. They just couldn't get passed Bobrovsky.
It's crazy to me how the Hurricanes outplayed the Panthers even more than Vegas did but still got swept. Shows how crazy Bobrovsky was versus them and how much he fell off in the Cup Final.
Also, just want to point out a small error -- Canes vs Isles game 6 did have a lead change. Isles went up 1-0 but the Canes ended up winning 2-1 in OT.
@@PinholesGraham because that does not take into account entertainment factor… there’s no stat for the Evandro Kane or Alex Peitrangelo drama. There’s no stat for the Leon Draisaitl individual history. There’s no stat for watching McDavid vs Eichel round one.

Hopefully they can solve the Edmonton problem just like how Vegas did.
aves vs kraken was the most entertaining series i’ve ever watched easily. what kind of algorithm would put vgk vs jets 5 game blowout as higher than that
"At least we got an overtime goal" should be the slogan for this channel lol
You should cover the 1997 series between the Ducks and Detroit or the 1998 series between Detroit and Dallas.
Crazy that Vegas’ best series was against Winnipeg💀
That canes-fla series was one of the most frustrating and demoralizing things to watch as a canes fan. A couple more bounces and it could've gone the other way.
reminded me of the 2014 stanley cup finals
always a good day when pinholes graham uploads
question- where in the stanley cup finals ranking does this years finals stand? where does florida stand in the ranking of best runner-ups? don't need a whole explanation necessarily (unless you want to), just wondering where they land
Go back to the cup finals rankings video and check the pinned comment for your answer
What a wonderful thing to wake up to
Best hockey on the planet right here folks!!!
Where does Vegas and Florida ranks compared to the other finalists from 2008 and forward?
All the way at the bottom
Looking at the dominace stats I kinda suspected that. But Florida should at least rank high in the "Fun" category.
i’m confused, Game 5 with NYI/CAR never had a 3 goal differential, was just curious is this is the model or a graphic issue?
Was surprised to see that series in the top 5 but the fact that Isles defense / goaltending keeps games close but watching it felt like they were outplayed most of the series especially when they were ahead! fantastic work on the video as always.
As a canes fan, I was so mad that bobrovsky decided to suck right after playing like god against us
It was more like everyone on Florida just ran out of energy in the Final.
The most lopsided cup final since 1996
And against Bettman's team, go figure. I'm not a Florida fan by any means but the fact that the Oanthers got away with murder for every series but against Vegas, they called EVERYTHING. No one will convince me it's not rigged. Unfortunately the refs get the hate but they're just doing what they were told to do. It gets worse every year.
As a heartbroken Bruin fan…😢💔😢
Thank you, Pinholes!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can you do his for a bunch of years pls?
If there is a high enough demand for it, I will!
2 reasons why the Florida and Toronto series was so great. “We want Florida” and Gudas’ “wooooooo” in Woll’s face.
Do a top 10 list of the best nhl series of all time
Another good playoffs past is the 2001 ECSF between Pittsburgh and Buffalo
Not sure why Vegas fans should be upset about this. All this proves is how badly they stomped everyone
Lmao, stomped. Yeah, OK. If not for Bettman and the refs, who knows what would have happened or who they would have played.
@@jeffreycairns767 that’s an idiotic statement. No major player was taken out in any series against Florida. And believe me they tried against Vegas.
At all.
Should judge series on ref factor, where Toronto wins 1st place on refs deciding games and the series
-a Flyers fan
5:57 that nearly made me stop being a Stars fan
The Colorado/Seattle series was the most boring 7 game series ive ever seen and the Canes/Panthers series was the most fun 4 game series lol.
The goat
Before watching the finals better be last. It somehow made the NBA finals look better 😂
7:06 sigh* my favorite teams and I wasn’t even able to watch half the series
"Cumulative team effort"???
Are there really people out there who actually think players don't try their best in playoff games
As a Dallas Stars fan, this season was a falling point.
ANOTHER VIDEO TO THE COLLECTION OF PINHOLES GRAHAM’S INFINITELY REWATCHABLE CONTENT
The saltiness from this video because of Vegas winning the Cup is wonderful. Keep dumping your salt, NHL. Its making for wonderful seasoning.
I resigned myself to knowing Toronto was getting kicked out in the second round. But, man, the way they played in that series against Florida..
It wasn't Toronto playing. It couldn't was have been. They were a team with purpose and determination. They just couldn't get passed Bobrovsky.
And the refs/Bettman.
cool
In my unbiased opinion, the Panthers/ Bruins series sucked.
Jokes aside, this would be really cool if you did this for other years.
Hill was the best goalie ez
Vegas sucks ! Let's go Stars !
Ok and here is where advanced stats gets stupid. Vegas Edmonton was miles better than Caronlina New York
How so?
Also 0:09
@@PinholesGraham because that does not take into account entertainment factor… there’s no stat for the Evandro Kane or Alex Peitrangelo drama. There’s no stat for the Leon Draisaitl individual history. There’s no stat for watching McDavid vs Eichel round one.
@@dannydevito2989 Did that make the actual hockey better?
Games 2 and 4 were over less than a period in.
Game 3 was over halfway through.
That's half the series. It wasn't a bad series. Just okay, on the whole.
Edmonton should have won the cup, vegas cheated there way
