As for the kiss between Shinya and Toshiya, there's high prob it's just fan service. Something quite common in Japanese music world. Excellent vid by the way! Thank you for it :)
Shinya has a unique drumming style in the world of metal drummers. It is like he uses all the pieces of the drums and contribute them equally in the making of the songs. Nice video
Shinya has a special place in my heart because when one of my friends discovered dir en grey and showed them to me it was there Yokan PV, In which Shinya wears a nice white dress. We were young, dumb, and still trying to understand visual kei so we always kind of joked around that Shinya was the pretty girl in the band. Now it's 2020 and I found his Instagram... i'm glad he's still pretty! lmao
I do believe Shinya kinda sees himself as a woman but I don't think there's anything wrong with that or being gay or anything. He's a sweet boy and a good drummer!
@@reisnow80 I know and I don't really interpret it that way I read Japanese and by the way that he said it it seems more like a seasoned self more as a womanly type person but not necessarily as a woman
I've been a fan of these guys since way back, I discovered them shortly after Kisou was released. Hearing Shinya evolve has been one of my favorite parts of the experience. Nicely done sir
Shinya is definitely a unique drummer, but I do think where he often falls short is during live performances. He tends to simplify double bass patterns and also seems to have trouble playing really big, fast fills (check out remakes of Karma and Kiri to Mayu) for example. I think the problem is that Shinya is NOT a metal drummer, but as Dir en grey dipped into a heavier style, he was forced into adapting his drumming to fit the music. Dum Spiro Spero is DEG’s most extreme material, and this was when Shinya struggled the most. Check out live performances of Juuyoku; Shinya straight up just does not play the double kick pattern in the opening drum fill. Also, around the time Arche was being released, bassist Toshiya said Shinya would often program drum parts on his computer that he couldn’t replicate on a drum kit. All that said though, Shinya is a fantastic drummer when he’s in a style he’s comfortable with. Uroboros and Arche is some of his best work because those albums are heavy but still diverse. It’s when the band goes into heavier material that he doesn’t excel as much.
Most of the stuff you find on the internet about their personal lives is usually just fangirl BS. Japanese celebrities, in general, seem to be a lot more private about what they do when they are off stage than western celebrities, so no one will probably ever know anything about Shinya except for the people that actually know him.
Not sure if you've done anything...but what do you know about Mucc's singer Tatsuro? The band is probably one of the best out there now, as they do not limit themselves to one 'style". Their sound bounces around so much, from song to song, more so than album to album. Tatsuro has one of the great voices right now (well since 1997) . Gut wrenching is putting it lightly. Just a suggestion.
Umbrella is so basic... so easy and it's fun as hell. My biggest problem is the speed...still not quite there yet. It's a power punk song... hits me right in the feels.
Yeah, it's a very rhythmic song. Very percussive rhythms in all of the instruments. When I was studying composers back in college, I found that most drummers and percussionists in western society go for distorted rhythms and layering patterns. In umbrella, Shinya does this but also puts in a popish melody in the chorus. Japanese drummer/composers tend to use layering rhythms and simple catchy melodies. Shinya also did some interesting rhythmic layering in Marlamade Chainsaw. Kinda wish Dir en Gery still gave their songs individual composer credit because I felt like they all wrote very differently...and it's pretty fun to study them. The wikipedia page on Vulgar has vanished...I wonder if it's Dir en Grey themselves doing this. I swear their wikipedia changes constantly...but I'm almost certain Shinya wrote Marlamade Chainsaw.
I'm guessing that's what draws me to Diru... the change ups they throw at us. Songs like Umbrella, Marmalade, even Child Prey... it speaks to me on an older level, don't get me wrong, I like almost all of their stuff. but the older stuff...the more raw sounding, is throwback for me. I went through the punk scene in So. Calif from the start, until about 1990...so anything that gives me that vibe I'm drawn to. Another example of that for me is Ruder, by The Gazette... songs such as those have a chord progression I guess you might call it..that immediately hits me... makes me yearn for the pit..(not that it would ever happen) I like it when a band allows, for lack of a better term, members that don't usually contribute to the song writing, to actually write their own...and Yes, I know that Yukke of Mucc...well, we won't go there tonight.
This band seems really interesting. You've convinced me to check into them a little more. What songs are your favorites by Dir En Grey, or what would you recommend?
If you're not into screamo, then I think that Kodou is a good one to start with. Cage Rinkaku The Final Vinushka I think those are good ones. If you like screamo then Grief will get you pumpin.
They all used to be on here. I remember watching them on UA-cam long ago, but I could only find people who've used clips of them. Here's Shinyas. ua-cam.com/video/ya3vUp7TVNc/v-deo.html
Maybe you could do one for isshi, the singer of Kaggra. He passed away but I thought he was really an amazing singer. And maybe Shin of Kagrra. He played the guitar and the koto which you don't normally see a Koto played in a rock or visual Kei band.
😂 I thought the reading of the profile thing was pretty funny I do agree a lot of the profiles can be weird and just made up but you actually did find one that was genuine I know a lot of people that use that page mostly what they're doing is translating things from interviews or radio shows and then putting it into writing. as for the Die having a crush on him part is referring to when Die first join the band and he was confused as to what gender Shinya was and it became an inside joke in the band so I don't really think that part of the profile was meant to be taking that seriously but you never know I guess.
Ya never know lol Yeah Dir en Grey profiles were always funny to read. Shinya's an interesting character though. He has really good technique these days too. He was one of my favorites when I was playing drums. I would even play that "304" song on gauze that had a rare drum solo.
@@PhoenixSplash yeah he really is something amazing! I've been listening to dir en grey for a very long time since I was like 9 years old I have a few friends that are Japanese and introduced me to the band so you could say that dir en grey has always had a special place in my heart also having friends that speak the language and are also just as much into the band is I am really helps with getting to understand things like a lot of the interviews and stuff like that lol! I've always liked shinya the most even though I used to get a little weirded out by him at first mostly because he seems to be very distant at first and often doesn't even look at the camera or anyone for that matter and never really seems to say anything but the more time I spent watching his interviews and simply paying attention to his work I began to appreciate him because he and I are very similar in the fact that we're both very introverted but extroverted at the same time it's weird to explain but he's a very nice person and he's very talented person at that sadly though I don't think he realizes how talented he truly is I believe that's why he didn't really show a lot of his skills in the early days of the band just a theory I guess but I suppose it's interesting to think about lol!
Yeah, he's very humble. He reminds me of a 70s drummer. They look like "rebels" who are really into rock and roll only, but then you analyze their technique and style and you hear jazz and bossanova mixed to fit Dir en Grey songs. I don't know how he got to be so good. It's kind of cool to see Yoshiki's technique becoming more proficient like Shinya's even though Yoshiki was the one to inspire Shinya. There was a tour that Toshi did with Shinya on drums and you see Shinya play those X songs like a breeze using finger muscles instead of forearm.
@@PhoenixSplash yeah I remember seeing that I don't remember much of it but what stays with me definitely was the way Shinya played! But maybe it's just me but I think that he tends to not use is forearm strength more often than not I mean I think he tends to use his finger strength the most intense and tends to just rely on his arms for support well mostly letting his shoulders do most of the moving so not only is his drum playing technique very intricate and very almost delicate and away the very way he moves and plays the drums also is! maybe if you look closer especially when the drum cam is showing him playing at side angles it's pretty easy to notice I guess I don't know though! Either way I haven't really seen a lot of drummers play exactly in that way so I guess one day Shinya just got up and decided I'm going to change everything! Lol!😄

Dir En Grey was my first jrock band and I always loved Shinya~ I used to trick my family with his beautiful photos haha
