    So sick. I'm glad someone finally decided to get footage of an aurora without feeling compelled to put it in a time lapse. That gets so annoying.

    I remember when I was a kid, my step-father waked me up at the middle of the night because there was a aurora borealis. Still have the image in memories, with was purple and even more beautiful since there was a lake and you could see the reflection. If you ever get the a chance to watch one, do it.

      Me too. And I lived in Orkney and Caithness (very northern UK) for three years and never thought to look! No one ever mentioned the Lights...

    • @krystallvinter7438
      @krystallvinter7438 7 років тому

      John Melville you're lucky, you live a place where you have the chance to see them. I live in denmark, and it's not nearly north enough for the lights to appear here. if you get the chance, you should go see an aurora!! I bet the experience will be magical.

    • @johnswimcat
      @johnswimcat 7 років тому +2

      Hi Mili, unfortunately I don't live there any more, I'm in Wales now. Some people I've spoken to have been to Saariselka in the far north of Finland and said it was really good for the Lights. Anyway, let's hope we both see them sooner or later, I'm told it's amazing!

      Hi Mili, you might be able to see the Lights from Denmark tonight. We've just had a weather forecast saying they should be visible from northern England tonight (Thursday 29th September) and were last night. That's about the same latitude as some of Denmark I think.I drive a taxi at night so will be looking out for them but am probably too far south. Anyway, good luck, let me know if you see them! John

      Roshni Rajendran On average I see them once a month, maybe more in winter. I usually stay up until 2AM to see them. The northern lights come in many different colors such as green, blue, yellow, pink and red. You need to go very very far from any city as possible and make sure to check nights when there's no full moons, because full moons and city lighting won't make you see them good. There is nights where the northern lights can be seen all night long, while there's other nights where you'll see them for a few minutes. I'm not sure where you'll see the lights but the northern lights can be seen as far south as Kansas in the western hemisphere while in the eastern hemisphere, the most south they been is Germany and countries that are paralleled with Germany. I live in Minnesota on the 47th latitude but the more north you go, the better you'll see them but don't go too north because they aren't seen in the north pole.

      The Northern Lights dip down into the temperate latitudes sometimes. Been seen at least as far south as the Carolinas, and more frequently if you live along the Canadian/U.S. border. If you live anywhere but the tropics you could see them a number of times. But, unless you are near the Arctic Circle the lights won't appear to be overhead, the colors are greatly subdued, and the shifting around isn't apparent. I saw them once in Wyoming back in the early 1970's; the lights were mostly white, localized in one spot and not really moving. The closer you get to the poles, the more dazzling the display.

  • @9UaYXxB
    @9UaYXxB 8 років тому +3

    I'm not sure how this was filmed. I've never seen the aurora until its quite intensely dark out, I assume this was done with a special camera/optics? You can see stars clearly in this, yet the foliage on the trees shows its coloration, so I assume some sort of polarization was used to diminish ambient light yet 'admit' the spectrum of the aurora itself in these images? I imagine this was shot at twilight, but again with very special camera and lensing.

    • @9UaYXxB

      +Swede McGuire And my compliments to you, Gardar. This is very special!

    • @octavomaran5972
      @octavomaran5972 8 років тому

      +Swede McGuire I'm pretty sure that it is just a high iso. I don't think that it is a special camera or lens or filter. Judging by the noise and high contrast, iso is probably the best guess.

    • @andiprice7743
      @andiprice7743 8 років тому

      +Swede McGuire you would need a wide (low) aperture such as f/2.8 or so. Depending on the camera you can also adjust the ISO settings to that the sensor is more sensitive to light coming into the camera and what the camera detects. Of course it never hurts to have a good lens like this anyway.
