    Like you, I also had an opportunity to row a gondola in Venice once and like you, I wasn't what anyone would call naturally gifted. I was embarrassed at how poorly I did and surprised too at how hard it was to get into the rhythm. Thanks so much for being such a good sport about it. Venetians are suffering greatly from the pandemic. I'm sure it's of little comfort but their city is beautiful in its solitude.

    Another great video guys. That ship is a hopper dredger, when they get on the location of where they are dredging they lower them two poles that are sticking up down onto and penetrating into the sea bed, that holds the ship in position, then the dredging is done with that crane you see mid ships, on the crane there is thing like a grab that they lower down onto the bottom grabbing the silt/mud off the bottom making the channel deeper, when she is full, as she was in your vid, they travel out to deep water or to a place they are in-filling and dump the load, there are big doors on the bottom of the cargo holds that hydraulically open and all the mud falls out, close the doors and they go back for another load. They are flat bottomed like a barge so they don’t draw a lot, light ship she would draw less than a meter, full she would draw 2 to 2.5 Maybe 3 I would think.

    Great video - very creative use of the 3D camera. Rowing a gondola is almost unique form of propulsion, the closest compatible technique is a single man Canadian canoe but the movement is reversed on a gondola due to the fulcrum and more power can be generated due to the long oar.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  3 роки тому +1

      I was expecting it to be similar to a Canadian canoe, with some sort of J stroke to keep you straight. But it's very different from that. Using the oar to maintain steerage but not create too much drag (which not only slows you but makes the oar fall off the Focola) is extremely difficult!

    Just to inform you in case your not updated yet, those boxes at Torcello serve to cultivate the so-called "Moeche", a kind of shore-crab. In order to avoid that the skin/outside skeleton starts to get rigid the crab should not touch the ground as the contact to the ground starts to process to get rigid. The moeche in the traditional venezian kitchen will be fried and are delicious. As they are a lot of work the cost more then 40 € /kg. I'm following your channel since several month's. I am from Austria and my wife is from Venice, we live in the mountains close to Salzburg .We discovered the lagoon for several years with a traditional motorboat, the topetta. Being a leisure-time-sailor since decades we bought this year our Sun Odyssey 37, she is moored close to Venice, at Cavallino. Many thanks to you to give us the possibility to get thes great pictures from the lagoon. Did you know that in march-april you can find there thousands of flamingos. Thank you very much again und "Buon Natale".

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  3 роки тому

      Arh that's really interesting. We watch the guys picking up the crabs at low tide at Certosa for Moeche. We're told they usually put them in some thin batter so they eat it and then deep fry them whole so the batter is inside. Sounds interesting. We haven't tried them yet.

    Thanks for this introduction to Gondola rowing. I will practice next time I go to Venice.
    The big boat with two "masts" was a dredger. So if it got stuck it could easily dredge an deeper passage. The masts go down to become standing poles. (mansplaining or guessing)

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  3 роки тому +2

      I think that was guessing Lars! The 'Masts' are definitely on rams to lower for stability, but I think that just for lifting building materials on & off and general use of the crane. Cranes, cement mixers, materials all work from boats here so I think this is something that would pull up to the building that was being worked on with all the necessary materials & crane them on & off. Wasnt dirty enough to be a dredger!

    • @Vd1912
      @Vd1912 3 роки тому +1

      @@svfairisle No ist a dredger to deepen the waterways. The poles are lower in the ground for anchorage so that they can lift the sand up and load it on board or on a barge. There was high water in Venice the last days. They said the weather forecast does not see it and they didn't close the MOSE system.

We aim to leave at the beginning of April and head for Turkey for next winter. Do you have plans yet? How are you going to tackle the Brexit issue? I guess you will have to bring Tigerlily back next year if you want to avoid VAT?

    Great video, just love your history segways. FYI; the big ship is a shallow draft dredger. Identified by the spuds or mooring posts fore and aft, the day shapes and lights and the air cooled power pods at the rear. If you get close you will see the big dredge buckets for the crane on deck. Don't get too close! We used to fly into Marco Polo airport every two weeks in a previous life, it is a wonderful place Venice. If you get the chance try to get a look around the tidal defence barrier. Brilliant piece of engineering no one seems to know about. Have a great Christmas. Hope you guys have a great Xmas too, where are you now? The Bose barrier here has been a big success it is a great piece of engineering, but it did take two decades to get built! It's been a bit of a scandal here with money being syphoned off, but it's working now and has already saved Venice from flooding 3 times this winter. Until this week when they forgot to activate it! Well, it was something almost a stupid as that, the high tide was higher than predicted and they didn't close it because they didn't have permission! I'm will try and get a closer look at the dredger, if thats what it is, seems strange it's so clean & it wasn't displaying any day shapes. Don't dredgers display a diamond when they are not dredging?

      Maybe I can answer one of your question in return (# 9:49): the ship is an excavator, I know such from Holland, it rams at a certain position the two long piles (front and rear on the ship) into the ground to stabilize, then the boom can be used to take out the mud out of the the channel/fairway, the material is then unloaded either on another ship or on the edge of the channel....

    Just a thought about the brass protection. There's a product that was mentioned on the You Tube Sampson Boat Co., site which is being used to protect the polished bronze work. We have tried it on the brass fittings we have on Greenwitch and it really does work very well long term with out creating a hard permanent coating as with lacquer. It is: Renaissance Wax, which is the polish protector and there's also the Pre Lim burnisher. These are available on-line through Rest Express and well worth a try. Enjoy Christmas and New Year. Looking forward to your further adventures in 2021.

      Hi Richard, yes I saw it and I got some Renaissance wax. I didn't find it worked though. I admit I only tried it on the bronze compression post inside the boat which I have at a high polish but will pick up a hand print every time you touch it. It thought the wax might stop that, it didn't. I could try it on the outside stuff to see if it delays tarnishing, but I have high hopes of the Gtechniq stuff for they make teflon coatings for metals and for gel coat. I'm going to try both, we will see!

    • @richardkeen1996
      @richardkeen1996 3 роки тому

      Hi Steve, that's fair enough. We used it on the cabin lamps and bell and it seems okay, Sue also used it on our front door fittings at home and doesn't - so far - show marks if it's touched. It will be interesting to see how it works on external fittings. It'll also be interesting to see how the Gtechniq performs and it would be good to hear the results in due course. May be a better option for us. Keep safe and stay well.

Would love to know what video editing software you use and how many cameras you use seems you set a couple of cameras up and edit in the different shots? Hi Steve, I will try to do a video on production at some point. I use Adobe Premiere Pro, I switched to it from Final cut 7 about 10 years ago & think it's very good. Yes I do often use multiple cameras, Premiere can easily sync sound sources so as long as you get reasonable sound on all the cameras you can line them all up on the timeline and cut between them. I'm a little old fashioned and I never jump cut I just think it's lazy and ugly.

    Hi, What size Mr Funnel do you use and does it solve the blow-back you get when using the pump nozzle directly in the filler? (Fed up of getting diesel all over my deck and dogger!)

      I got this one... www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000SOKE5E/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s05?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I suffered from occasional blowback so would usually be filling at about 1/2 speed, with the funnel I can actually fill quicker it's more like 3/4 speed without it overfilling the funnel & no blow back.I'm sure you already know this but always chuck a bucket of salt water over the deck before you start and the odd splash won't matter so much.

    What is the tidal range in venice, I thought most of the med had hardly any tidal range.

    • @judyaslett2
      @judyaslett2 3 роки тому +2

      About 2 meters

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  3 роки тому +2

      It's an oddity of the lagoon that the very small tide (about a foot) in this part of the Med gets amplified in the lagoon producing about a meter of regular tide. Added to that the effects of Southerly/Northerly winds in the Adriatic can build up another meter which is harder to predict which is why they miss-judged the tide this week and they didn't shut the barrier in time so Venice flooded again.

    If I may add summat...I recently watched another sailing blog (gasp, shock, horror, probe)...yes there are others, not as brilliantly produced of course but nevertheless entertaining, and they did a video of the ten worst boat purchases that they had made (two of them were ten gorillas each!)...totalling around $23,000'ish. It occurred to me that during one of your quiet moments whilst gazing at that cloudless blue azure sky you may fancy doing the same as it was extremely helpful (I imagine) to those who actually own boats. Come to that the ten top purchases would make another interesting video likewise. Just a thought.

      Yes I saw that video from the Rigging Doctor. Luckily so far we haven't made too many bad choices in our purchases. The Aquamot outboard is the only really bad purchase that I can think of. At the moment we can cope with the worst case scenario, a strict 90/180 rule, by staying in Croatia, Montenegro and Turkey along with the Schengan countries, but getting out of the Med in the Western Med will be a real PITA if that happens.

      Yes you give it to the petrol station staff to dispose of, they have safe disposal and it's a good chance to point out their diesel has water in it, they usually look embarrassed! I didn't give the little bit we collected in there to them this time as I wanted to film it and we were in a rush because of the tide, so it went in with the 2 gallons of old engine oil I currently have in cans waiting for proper disposal once we get back to the marina.
