    Hi Ann, I’m fairly new to your channel…which I truly enjoy watching…and new to worm farming. I’ve been at it for about a year and a half, so I’m certainly not qualified to give advice. However, I haven’t had any fruit fly problems. I keep all my food scraps in the freezer before feeding them to my worms. I think….not real sure…that freezing my produce kills any eggs that may have come in with the food from the grocery store or from my garden. Maybe you do this as well, but I wasn’t sure. Have a blessed day and best of luck with eradicating the fruit flies.

      @PlantObsessed  Місяць тому +2

      I think it was caused by my trial of only using hand torn paper instead of shredded. The food was not as thoroughly covered and the little things found their way in. I make mistakes so you don't need to lol 👍🏼😀🪱

    After 10 years of careful testing i have not found any coco coir or peat that is free of various parasites. Gnats being the most common. Thrips, root aphids, mites and fungal disease are rapidly moved to plants. I mostly use egg cartons for worm bedding, maybe some composted wood chip for startup. Never seen a gnat in my bin.

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed  Місяць тому

      Interesting. This bin has not had any peat or coir for about 6 months. :)

    almost three years and i haven't had gnat's in my bins in a noticeable amount. (they are outdoors so...) though in the spring the gnat's show up in my food scraps waiting to go out to the compost pile (wish i had room in my freezer for that stuff) then they like to hang around the fruits and vegetables on the pantry shelves. I've always gotten rid of them with a shop vac or the hose attachment of the vacuum cleaner. sucks them right out of the air. i can never get them all in one go, some fly off. but once a day i vacuum them out of the air and about day three they are almost all gone. (and by then too i've cleaned up whatever mess brought them around lol) doesn't work with house fly's . they are too strong flyers. gotta swat them lol but the wimpy little gnats are no problem with a vacuum. works on fleas too , but that's a different story :)

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed  Місяць тому +1

      I wish I could remember to keep a shop vac near the bin. So much to do in the spring,my brain is all over the place.👍🏼😀🪱

    Well…😂 nice harvest Ann. My worst infestation came from the slugs I introduced into the worm bin. Once I started freezing my food scraps I’ve been pretty good with fruit flies and fungus gnats

    The Bti worked very well for me this winter. Took a good few weeks to be 100%. Actually, I was in a bin the other day and saw a few fungus gnats, so I just mixed a handful of granules into a pretty moist bin.
    My poor worms are on autopilot with all the garden chores, I have been giving them some worm chow at least.
    Have a good week! Stay Well!!!!

      It is seriously a struggle with spring tasks in the garden. It has rained here so much the weeds are getting out of control. I'm putting in the garden this week too. Good thing worms are patient.👍🏼😀🪱

    I got a heck of a gnatocalypse when I bought some worms from a guy and they came in on them. Was almost forced by my then boyfriend to get rid of my worms over it! Did everything under the sun for it, and it still took a long time to get rid of them. BTI, layered dry cardboard on top, bubble wrap on top of that, starved the bins, put a bedsheet on top of all of my bins, sticky tape traps in and around the bins, an actual machine that sucked in the buggers in and lodged them onto another sticky trap (called Katchy if you're curious), froze the crap out of everything that was to be fed to the worms, the ACV traps (which did not work at all for me)... I was super aggressive about it since I was about to lose my worms. They eventually faded away, luckily. I haven't had a problem since, and it's been over a year now. But if it happens again... This time I have some carnivorous plants at the ready to help out (my sundew seems especially good at the task of eating fruit flies, but I'm about to get a butterwort that's also supposedly good for that too)!

    Just got rid of my “gnatpocolips” with sticky traps 3 of those gnat traps you make and then I cover my bin with a layer of brown paper the put diatomaceous earth on top that and repeated that for 3 layer making sure to cover the surface of bin then let sit to dry out some and cross my fingers they seem to be gone thanks for the videos

      Ya know... it didn't really occur to me that punching and stick probing might cause harm to the wormies. I can see how it might be a slightly legit concern - but when it comes to worm farming, I believe that some collateral damage is unavoidable and to deny that is a bit naive :)

    I had a problem with Gnats last summer and it took a month to get rid of them using traps and BTI solution. AV turned me on to the BTI after watching his videos daily ! I like the idea of using BTI solution to moisten the bedding. Will keep that in mind if it should ever happen again. :-)

    The only place we're getting a gnat'o'pocalipse is the kitchen, flying all over the cuttings of veggies. As long as they don't get into the bedroom and fill my nose while I'm sleeping, I'm okay. 😅 They aren't too much of a problem in the worm bins, as of now... let's see what the summer brings this time ☀️🤣
