In this video I feature two events that I recently attended purely to use as practice for my photography. Even after 20 years there is no harm in practising and trying new things. I went to a 1940's event and also a Motorcycle show with one aim in mind.
Composition! I took with me my Nikon F3, Ilford FP4 and three lenses as well as a Polarising filter.

Brilliant shots mate. You have a knack for "war" photography. Whoever arranged that festival(?) ought to commission you for promotional work.
Hi, Roger.
You are doing a heck of a job with your channel, my friend.
I really enjoy looking at it.
And I love the 50mm, my friend.
And even though I photograph for 35 years I still learn a lot from you, my friend.
Greetings from the Netherlands,
Antoine.
Nice job here. Love the photos.
That’s no ordinary F3 😎
Great shots! (and who doesn't love a Spitfire?!?!?). Love how you talk us through your process!!
Thanks Eric.
Great photos i like the motorcycle and the Spitfire ❤!!
Great ideas I would love to do something like that but with my luck events like that happens on days I work at my regular job lot of times. Awesome photos!
Great video, really sound advice. I'm going to force my daughter to watch at least the first half, as she's learning proper photography at the moment. I love the results with the Ilford FP4. Amazingly, I just tried it for the first time last month in the Pyrenees and got the most spectacular crisp light and dark contrast with it. I was a died in the wool Kodak man until recently. I'll be working more with Ilford in the future.
Nice compositions, Roger! I like your play by play, it really makes a viewer feel as if they are there. I have recently been having issues with composition. The last half dozen times I have done an out and about shoot I fail to take my time and really focus on the composition, vanishing point, negative space, etc. Last time I got only 2 blocks from home and shot two rolls of TriX 120 within 30 minutes. Have not developed yet.
That's the key Rick. Taking your time, studying the subject. If you have time that is like I did in the video! Sometimes quick shooting such as Street Photography things aren't so accurate but they don't need to be.
One of your best videos, always good but this covered so much and a great overall educational experiance.
Glad it was helpful!
As always a really great video. Thanks for doing these!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Sometimes you just have to take what you get at these events
There are always distractions in the compositions that you just have to embrace
A nice selection here Roger 📷👍
thank you , yet again another great vlog, with ideas
Thanks Steve.
Love the photos! Fun Video
Thanks Ted
An F3, true classic & my favourite camera
I don't always comment but I really enjoy your content. You certainly go the extra mile to make them entertaining.
Thanks Yorkie!
This is another great video keep them coming, This proves you need a a 24 mm Nikkor lens just to get that bit more in the frame.
Definitely. Wish I had wider!
Brilliant brilliant brilliant Roger !!! You rock mate! 🍻
Thanks!
Super brilliant episode 😃
Thanks for watching.
Nice shots!
Thanks for the visit
Loved it m8 🙂
Glad you enjoyed. The profile pic put me off the scent for a moment.
heading straight ebook - thank you!
Thank you. Enjoy! Any questions feel free to email me.
Nice work as always. You've got more self-control than I do - I would have burned through a dozen rolls at an event like that
I took one roll with me (24). I felt it was enough though, but I did have a digital camera with me Mike
Try limiting yourself to 12 shots in the whole day. You need to observe more and take your time. Some of my best stuff has come from a single picture taken rather than dozens.
@biggstavros5876, first of all, I was just kidding Roger with my comment.
As to your comment, it doesn't matter if you take 1 shot or 10,000, as long as they please you.
My style is very similar to Roger's (one of the reasons that I like his channel so much) and I would have taken many of the same shots.
Btw, I've been a hobbyist/semi-pro for over 50 years - maybe I'm fooling myself, but I'd like to think that I'm starting to get the hang of it.
@@mikesmith-po8nd Please don`t get the hang of it. You will then become bored.
Love this! Many thanks
Thanks for watching.
Thank you for purchasing the ebook.
Thanks for taking the time to make one too Roger
What a pity the Spitty didn't have an engine. You could've gone for a spin in it!!😊
I could have but I forgot my flying jacket lol
I actually like the look of your digital shots man. Oh and as a former journalist I feel I have to mention your video title used the word practiCe when it should be practiSe. Always with an s if it’s a verb. I sound like a school teacher 😂😂 Enjoyed the video mate. I go to a fair few 40s and 50s events. Steampunk events are quite popular with photographers now too. 👍📸
Thanks! Those bloody 'Cs". Yes Steampunk is popular at the music festivals here.
In England, it`s `practice`.
@@biggstavros5876 Not if it’s a verb. Practice with a c is when it’s a noun, e.g. a practice session, a doctors’ practice etc.
I’ve never shot 35mm FP4 at ISO 200; I’m guessing it’s a little bit more contrasty but the grain is still okay?
Do you prefer using FP4 to HP5? If so, do you shoot at box speed or 100. My camera doesn’t have 125
100 is close enough really. Russian cameras never match ASA//ISO exactly, so with them I shoot as close as box speed unless I want to push or pull, like any film. 👍📸
I prefer FP4 where I will shoot at 100 - 400 even 800 sometimes and it handles well. (With development compensation). HP5 is a very good film also.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss thanks for the info Rog, it’ll help the next time I get a roll of FP4 👌🏻
What camera did you use Rog?
He used his F3
Nikon F3 Limited this was. With Ilford FP4.
It's a shame the Union Flag was upside down. Although due to your composition it actually isn't noticeable in the shot 13:55
I didn't even notice that at the time. Well spotted.
Why does your ebook come up with price in dollars when you live in uk ?
It's an easier currency globally. Larger percentage of viewers are not in the UK.
Shoot like a papa Bos🇬🇧s🤫
Should have used a 1940s camera😂
I was going to but then I thought I'd end up being part of the show 😂
