I liked the interview. Very decent man being interviewed. Not many will admit to having been on the wrong side of a major issue; and instead of appealing to emotion, give you a reasoned reply. Enjoyed watching you around 1971, RIP.

I've searched high and low for the CBS report "Who Speaks for Birmingham." I have had no success. Anybody ever see it?

Well I gotta tell ya I really liked Howard K. Smith when saw him on ABC News when I was a kid. Him and the guy Harry Reasoner. I thought they were very clever, with words. Spoke directly and honestly, both of 'em. Probably related to Howard K. cuz I was a Hawk too, in Dove's clothing. Back then every kid where I lived had long hair and got high. But I was all about being a Marine, a grunt, a jar head. Then after Tet I saw it was like another Peleliu, where they were lying to them throwing away good Marine's lives - at least they was lying to us, the citizens. Oops! Sorry, I digressed. Yeah, so I can see the, "Murrow boy's" connection as can detect the influence for having personal integrity as a priority. Really like that. Belated RIP, Howard K. Smith, you were one of the Greats!

Mr. Smith died on February 15, 2002. It says here that this interview was taped on December 8, 2002. One of these must be wrong. Which one? Aha . . . At the end of this video, a subtitle appears that says it was taped on March 9, 2001, almost a year before he passed. The caption is wrong.

From the video's description: "In 2001, the late broadcast journalist and commentator for CBS and ABC News Howard K. Smith gave what was to become his final interview."

I think Howard K. Smith was the first news anchor to call for President Nixon's resignation while still on the air after reading the latest bombshell over Watergate.

I can recall the later years of Smith's career at ABC. There was a time when national journalists held our attention because in their reporting they were objective giving voice to BOTH sides of an issue. Now today, we have national journalists who use their position to advocate for views that mirror their own thus limiting freedom of speech all in the name of social and racial justice. We have become a poorer nation intellectually because freedom to express is being cancelled out. H K Smith would be aghast at what CNN, CNBC and the networks have become today.

The British are more honest in their job titles. The BBC has "news readers" that don't pretend to be journalists, out in the field as reporters actually developing stories.

This is the most awful questioning I’ve ever heard. Let the interviewee speak, and quit asking such labored, arduous questions. It’s obvious the God-forsaken interviewer loved to hear himself talk. Stop already.

The interviewer Silverstein is skilled and knowledgeable, his questions complete and literate, his subject Smith clearly at ease and engaged in lively conversation.
