    For me, and it's just a personal thing, I think the dark grittiness of the original film is an intrinsic part of the whole world of the Crow. I don't think I'll be buying the 4k version.

    Thank you for the video.
    I am going to have to strongly disagree with you. The Blu-ray images actually look a lot better than the 4K. The 4K looks like they bumped up the brightness way, way too much, making it look grainy and low quality. It is hard to tell just from some screenshots though.
    You are right about the movie and storyline not being particularly good. That is not why we love the movie or comic book though. They do visuals very well and the movie taps very much into 90's nostalgia, just listen to that Stone Temple Pilots song that sold the soundtrack. Interestingly enough, the comic book is very 80's, just look at that hair.
    In the comic book, his name is not Draven and O'Barr hated that they gave him a last name in the movie. In the comic, he does not have a last name but you can see when they show his case file, his last name ends with the letter S, so you can surmise that his last name would be Curtis.
    They gave him the name Draven as in d raven. You were right to call the bird in the film a raven because it is a raven, not a crow.

      @@MattEdwards1 Oh, so I'm not alone in thinking that. I saw another video talking about how amazing this film looks in 4K which made me really want to see it in 4K. However, I thought the screen shots in this video looked terrible. The Crow is coming to theaters for 2 days this month, but not in my city, otherwise we would go. My dad and my uncle went to The Crow in the theater in 1994.

      That is a very in depth and informative response. Thanks for taking the time to write it.
      Part of what may be making it look the way it does is I’m literally taking a picture with my phone directly off the projector screen. It’s a highly reflective screen so I think it can often make images look brighter even though I’m taking them in complete darkness.
      But I’m trying to show what it would look like on “the big screen.” So maybe not apples to apples.
      In the future, I’ll see if I can do more of the same from the bluray so the comparison is more “apples to apples” because when viewing with my own eyes on my equipment, I do believe the 4k is better

  • @ungraduatedmedia

    I’m not sure if it was Originally in 2:39 aspect ratio in 1994 or 1:85. I know the bluray was in 1:85 same as the 4k so I don’t think they did a resize on this one.

    Bottom line if you're a fan of the 1994 The Crow and you're a fan of 35 mm film this is the movie for you this is one of the best transfers I've ever seen. I seen this movie 30 years ago in the theater more than 20 times I know what it looks like and this is how it's supposed to look the regular Blu-ray is okay and there's nothing wrong with it but if you want a better picture quality more detail and filmic like structure and grain this is the movie for you also the title of this video doesn't say anything about criticizing the storyline I thought it was just a transfer review anyways get the movie you won't be disappointed it's better than the Blu-ray by far . Movie studios should pay attention , this is how 35 mm film transfers should look . they're supposed to look like this .

    Hi Ken, thanks for this detailed side by side comparison, watched this movie long back on star movies. Need to check it out again.
    Just a humble remark, I agree with some of the other commentators here that the 4K looks like we're watching in vivid mode of our TV and the bluray is probably the worst PQ ever. And I guess it's to do with your cam quality or may be since you're watching it on projector screen? Like with Aliens comparison also, I rewatched my bluray on my Sony X95L and believe me or not, it was on par with your 4k Aliens screenshots!
    I believe you could probably watch it on your TV to see any difference? The projector lacks some brightness and contrast compared to modern days TVs, may be that's what is revealing here.

    Good review. Still, taking pics with a external camera or a phone for comparing them is not the way to go for various reason. I already said that in one of your previous review.
    If I didn't understand or know anything about media stuff and would rely only on your pics to take a buying decision, I wouldn't buy a single movie, no offense intended. Per example :
    4K : look way to bright, grain to obvious which take all the place in all your pics. I see only that and it's not supposed. The bird close up at 11:04 is the perfect example of OVER-bright image and lacking contrast, it look almost like a black & white movie. Contrast and depth is 2 different things.
    Blu-Ray : look washed out, to dim, DNR at max, lack contrast.
    I have the same 4K player as you. 90% of the time, HDR is set to Natural (a notch above Standard) or the third setting (don't know the term in English since my player is set to French), the last setting (I think is Vivid) make the picture too bright since it crank the brightness too much and you lose some fine details and depth in most case.
    There are free tools we (media collectors) use since years for backing up our movies (DVD, BD, 4K, etc) and you can even find free tuts on UA-cam that explain step by step how to do it. MakeMKV is the most use one which you can download freely, use to backup your movies in mkv files without losing any A/V quality.

    • @ungraduatedmedia
      @ungraduatedmedia  25 днів тому +1

      All fair comments - I’m learning the best way to do this / show. I do think I have my player set to natural. And for the bluray I have been just putting it in the player and “recording it” and then saving it to an SDD so I can then capture the screenshot as legit as I can. The problem has been that the recording device doesn’t capture HDR10 or Dolby Vision.
      But I do have make MKV as I burn my discs to a NAS unit to play on Plex while I travel and it does capture HDR10 and Dolby Vision.
      My hope was to “show what I’m seeing” by taking images from my phone right off the screen. But I see your point…
      Moving forward, I’ll be changing to all off make MKV.

    • @SteviesCornerYouTubeChannel
      @SteviesCornerYouTubeChannel 25 днів тому

      @@ungraduatedmedia Yep, I understand your goal of sharing what you see to your audience.
      The thing is HDR content is manage and handle by the player and also by the TV / Projector. Having 2 devices in the equation alone and changing only 1 setting will show something different on the screen. Imagine now changing a multitude of settings on both devices... That is why I suggest you to show the image directly from the MKV. Since you already aware of the process, that simplify much. MakeMKV rip everything from the disk indeed. All HDR content.
      Also, since 2022, the difference between HDR10, HDR10+, DV and HLG is less pronounced since TV manufacturers color grading chips are far better than 4K TV's prior 2022. For what I saw, the latest 2024 TV's from top brand like LG, Samsung and Sony, HDR content is very well rendered, no matter which HDR encoding is use. DV is becoming more useless than before with latest TV's.
      As for UA-cam, HDR content isn't supported so your audience will always see a SDR presentation.
      My setup is much simpler than you. I rip my disks to a Windows PC server which is connected to my TV. I watch my movies on this 65" OLED only. I can't watch my movies elsewhere like you but it satisfy me that way.
      Continue your good work!
