That's true but traps are useful even for things like ankys. Very few things in Ark suck as much as looking for an hour or more for a suitably high level dino, knocking it out, and then having a pack of raptors suddenly appear and murder your knocked out dino. For #1 I like to have stone pillars instead of one of the doors. That way you can c-spin through the pillars with a ptera but the argy will get stuck. Then you land the ptera just out of the argies range so it is still agro’d on the ptera and you can easily shut the gate. It also gives a big gap to shoot the argy with tranqs
I kite it just close enough to where I can shoot it then I fly to the trap, jump off my mount, shoot it, and run into the trap then once it comes in I shut it then run out of the side.
For the floating pen, putting the ramp on the front is extra helpful. The first Baryonyx I caught, I just scooped him out of the river without ever getting aggro.

Theres only really 3 traps you need for standard dinos: the "argie" trap (can be used to tame anything that fits through a dino gate), rather than using 2 gates use a gate 1 end and then place 2 fence foundations with doorways going 3 high the other end, you can then fly a petra straight through. The standard "giga" trap (4 dino gate frames and large bear trap) can be used to tame anything that doesnt fit through a dino gate and the raft trap (usefull for killing alphas early game and taming stuff from the snow). Tip for building your 3x3 raft: 1st have a pillar on your hot bar, hit drive and dont move the camera (this centres your view), pull out your pillar and place it where the sail goes, stop "driving" and you can now snap a foundation next to the pillar, delete the pillar and place the rest of the foundations. That slightly puts it to the right... it wont allow you to place the left one.. Same on platform saddles,, you do have to move a bit but only doseways and theres guide lines on the raft
My word of wise is: Don't use gates to trap land animals, that's asking for a swift death or failed attempts when closing it. ALWAYS use ramps, and let the gate for access (or not even that if you got Cryopods / Quetz Platforms).

I've used it to tame Rexes and if you are quick enough you can have the Rex follow you up and out of the trap and still pick up the ceilings in time. And if you can't, it's a thatch ceiling. Ultimately doesn't make too much difference once you are established but early on it's much cheaper.
Made the last trap style tonight and used it to catch and kill an annoying alpha raptor that's been plaguing our beaches. Worked nicely thanks for the vid!
For the ramp trap, a 2x1 is normally big enough. Also using wood is okay for low damage Dino’s like trikes or carnos. Wood has a lot of HP, so you will knock it out before it breaks.
Make the large carnivore trap at least 4 doorframes high when taming a Spino, otherwise it will escape. (I tried it on mobile, I am not sure for PC and console)
I barely use any of those resources, my argie trap is 2 to 3 pillars straight up depending on ground then 9 ceilings then door frames around that besides one in the front for the argie to fly into turn around and snap it in place and your good to go, griffin pen is one dino gate foundations 2 wide 3 deep with one wall missing to fly through with a Petra, hop off close door
The Griffin Trap works just as well on Argy's--but more, only put three pillars, not five. That way, you can kite the prey with a pterodon, and just fly him right out the back. Then you pack him right in the back, and the griffon or argy will stay at the back, trying to reach ~him~, while you stroll around to the front and shut the door.
You dont always have to use stone to trap. Yes wood takes damage but if you're only gonna use it once it's fine but also the dino will eventually stop attacking and start running stopping the damage to structures
Pro tip I use the 3rd trap he showed and I build a 3x4 with doorframes 3 high for gigas. It’s really really easy and it can fit almost anything. Metal costs a lot but trust me it’s worth it you can tame anything in them. Very very nice trap.
Also for the Argys I use a thatch door-frames 3x3x3. Argys can fit through a 2x2 hole so I leave a hole and on the opposite side of the hole side I cut remove 1 doorframe as the Argy can’t fit thought it and ur pteranodon can. After the argy flys in I got and place 1 doorframe in the 2x2 hole and dam the argy is stuck. It’s super cheap and doesn’t take long to make. It can be broken however iv never had it happen as argys cant deal enough damage to break through before you get it down
So, probably old news by now, but you can place a ceiling tile attached to the edge of the foundation and then attach a foundation to that ceiling tile, allowing you to extend out past where it originally wouldnt let you. As long as you're not grounded or up against a dock or something else in your way of building
I use a trap similar to your second griffin trap. I put 3 pillars up then ceilings. Then pillars go down on every ceiling on edge of trap. Then dino gate goes on last. You can now kite argies, or allos in with a ptdon. Leave ptdon at end of trap, the dino agros on the ptdon. Take your time closing the dino door.
Thanks for your ideas. I play mobile and used your cages in this video to solo tame a quetzal. I used the behemoth gateways and an elevator above a revival platform. Because the mobile version has the platform I can revive creatures from their artifact implants. It’s not easy, but all I had to do was kill a quetzal; take its artifact, build a cage around the revival platform, and finish the process off by shooting the quetzal with tranq darts til it passes out. The large elevator platform kept the quetzal from flying over the gates and opening the doors forces it into the corner where two gates meet, snapped. If my phone could capture anything other than screenshots I’d have recorded it so others could try. If PC and console versions have a way to revive creatures other than the obelisks, this is easier than trying to grapple and shoot from an argentavis.
Little tip for new players: if a gate isnt opening inwards or outwards, whichever way you want. Stand to the side and open it and it should open the other way.
In the beginning you explain about moving straight back to place gates parallel. Because you could accidentally rotate while moving back in 1st person view which would also rotate gate off alignment, there is an easier way. Most times I place structures in 3rd person view. I rotate in 1st person, switch to 3rd person, use movement to check alignment (with like buildings and such, alignment to walls, floors, etc), then I continue to check alignment with 1st person & 3rd person views. Once aligned, I then also set placement while in 3rd person. In this case (of placing gates aligned, if in 3rd person when 1st gate placed, just moving back to place further gates ensures alignment... and better view of structure placement).
Very helpful vid CJ Thankyou. I recently picked up the game and thinking of adapting this to a raft, that way Im not restricted to kiting back long distances. Keep up the great work mate!
I just build the boat trap as far back as possible from the rudder with my rudder being on the outside of the trap. I can get every carnivore in it besides a Spino. I then make a 1 by 1 room around the rudder so the Dinos can't damage the raft. This is pretty cool because I place 2 standing torches inside the room and with the door closed I get the house effect so I can travel along the snow biome pretty comfortably without even the need of clothing. I barely ever get a snowflake and when I do it isn't up for long. I play on single player so I think when I built my two extra rooms that I might have gone above 88 peice limit at that point, not sure. But I made two small rooms on the right and left side. I have collision off so I can build compact. The left room has my bed, preserving bin, A table with two mortar and pestles and a campfire between them sitting on top of the table on it a storage box tucked under it, a smithy against the wall with another storage box over the anvil and one refining forge. This has been pretty efficient mobile taming base. My second room is a small cargo room. there are sloped roofs on these arms so I can run up it quickly on top of my rooms if I need to get a different angle to shoot. These too rooms are only 3 foundations big plus the slope roof so I can shove some boxes in them. They are one high so I don't obstruct my view. For the cage I used all door frames as I don't plan to use it on Raptors or smaller. The one side I have a stone dino gate. This is good if I also want to transport some dinos like my ankylosaurus. If I capture something larger that can't get out like a Rex. I take advantage of floor glitching with the raft to get it out since I am on console and don't have SPlus. EDIT: Works great on raptors I knew they couldn't go through doors but wasn't sure if they could go through frames without doors 2 high until I tried it out, just won't work for Pachy's and frogs for example although you can probably just drop them in their and then use the bola on them before they walk out.
Tamed an Argy by using the first one but bc I was a beginner level I used wooden ones and it took FOREVER to tame. Afterwards I built a hexagon-shape taming den out of stone gateways/doors, and built pillars with ceilings around it. I used my argy to kidnap an anky, frog, Equus, Kapro, and raptor to tame. I shoot tranq arrows from above to avoid damage and making it an easy tame
THANK YOU CHEESE!!!💖 This will help LOADS of new players! Trying to explain a build without actually BUILDING IT was absolutely frustrating... Thanks!!
KannabisBarbie It’s a bit of a clusterfuck, this video. Not sure it will actually help. There’s no point saying how to do it when you build it wrong and say don’t do that or it doesn’t matter, it’s a video presentation of how to do something not how not to do it and then narrate the correct way.
I use monkeys. Whistle the monkey to attack while on your shoulder (Make sure he is set to "Target Conscious Only") he will start whipping poop at the dino and it will act like dilo spit. Very good for keeping runners from getting away. once the poop starts flinging you just start popping darts into the dino and you are good. You can do this for flyers as well but you need to be on a griffin. Pteranodon, Argy and Wyvern all get their heads in the way but the griffins head sits level with it's back.
the first trap is better with a piller and a ceiling+wall on one end instead of another door. Cheaper and you can fly straight thru when argy chases you while on a smaller bid.
That first trap, the Argy trap. You are wrong about having to go around to close gate... You could easily close from between pillars. It's easy either way.
I don't know if it's still the case but when you made the video, there was a problem with rafts where they were vulnerable to any damage on the invisible mast. This why your baryonyx was doing damage in the video : it was hitting the invisible mast and damaging the raft directly as a result, bypassing the foundation protection
the argy trap... if you use double door frames a pteradon can fit through but an argy can't an only need on gate and run some ceiling tiles. a far superior way of building the trap...works for griffin as well.
This is great! I'm going to be issuing all of these traps!! I've been playing solo and get so aggravated when any dino that I'm trying to tame gets killed
If you are not allowed to place those foundations you can snap a thatch roof on the side then the foundation will snap to the roof which you can demolish afterwards Tested :)
? just use wooden or stone fence foundations to line one side of your gate trap. The gates snap to them for perfect 1-wide spacing. Then if you're building a blocking wall for one end with a hole for running through or pulling with a Ptera, you can right-angle the fence foundations across the gateframe to anchor the walls.
Griffin trap. 1 dino gate 6 foundations 18 door frames 6 ceilings 6 pillars. Just 2 pillar sets on the back allows a PT to fit but the grif or argy cannot. Much easier land PT outside back to keep agro run around close gate
Better way to do the large carnivore is to build ramps on the all the sides without the gate, kite it through, run through your door frame, zero chance of dying or having the thing escaping when trying to close the door, can even use a flyer that way
6 foundations, 24 door walls, 6 ceilings and a Dino gate is a much better argy trap. Works for anything that can fit through a gate but not a door. Only flyers need a ceiling, everything else just needs the doors. You can run into the trap to kite it in, then run out through the door walls. It is much less finicky than the trap you show. I have used it as my go to trap for most things for years
you can do the raft foundation with thatch then after the process of losing the thatch foundations you can then add stone foundations around the thatch one then demolish the thatch one and put stone in simple.
i play on a official server, so i thought that those traps are a little bit expensive for me to use. but then i saw the last one and i thought: thats my trap. i can use it over and over again, and i can use it whereever i choose to! genius! thank you!

It can be broken however iv never had it happen as argys cant deal enough damage to break through before you get it down
4 High***
So, probably old news by now, but you can place a ceiling tile attached to the edge of the foundation and then attach a foundation to that ceiling tile, allowing you to extend out past where it originally wouldnt let you. As long as you're not grounded or up against a dock or something else in your way of building
Also thanks I'm good at ark don't really know how to trap things so helped alot
You can only do that on mobile
You can only revive on mobile
I haven't used taming pens yet but I'm definitely going to do it now
cj: “c’mon come get me!”
argy: **proceeds to shove ptera off the cliff**
Very helpful vid CJ Thankyou. I recently picked up the game and thinking of adapting this to a raft, that way Im not restricted to kiting back long distances. Keep up the great work mate!
Great vid bud. Messed up alot and very funny but knowledgeable and good info. The fuck ups just made it memorable. GJ man.
EDIT: Works great on raptors I knew they couldn't go through doors but wasn't sure if they could go through frames without doors 2 high until I tried it out, just won't work for Pachy's and frogs for example although you can probably just drop them in their and then use the bola on them before they walk out.
i love the classic ten by ten wood ramp pen
You can just use bolas for small carnivores and herbivores
I use monkeys. Whistle the monkey to attack while on your shoulder (Make sure he is set to "Target Conscious Only") he will start whipping poop at the dino and it will act like dilo spit. Very good for keeping runners from getting away. once the poop starts flinging you just start popping darts into the dino and you are good. You can do this for flyers as well but you need to be on a griffin. Pteranodon, Argy and Wyvern all get their heads in the way but the griffins head sits level with it's back.
yeah but that's only like small herbivores and at the very best a raptor
If you look at 27:07 you will find...
That it doesn't exist
wait WHAAAAAA
I little....
XD
the first trap is better with a piller and a ceiling+wall on one end instead of another door. Cheaper and you can fly straight thru when argy chases you while on a smaller bid.
Tried small door trap and the trike got stuck on rocks lmao
That first trap, the Argy trap. You are wrong about having to go around to close gate... You could easily close from between pillars. It's easy either way.
I don't know if it's still the case but when you made the video, there was a problem with rafts where they were vulnerable to any damage on the invisible mast. This why your baryonyx was doing damage in the video : it was hitting the invisible mast and damaging the raft directly as a result, bypassing the foundation protection
On the one he tamed a therizino in you can also put a dino gate on the side so you won't have to demolish part of the trap to get the tame out
the argy trap... if you use double door frames a pteradon can fit through but an argy can't an only need on gate and run some ceiling tiles. a far superior way of building the trap...works for griffin as well.
This is great! I'm going to be issuing all of these traps!! I've been playing solo and get so aggravated when any dino that I'm trying to tame gets killed
Using not issuing
I tamed my first hyenadon thanks to you thanx dude
Great video very very helpful and honest 👍 keep up the good work 👏
If you are not allowed to place those foundations you can snap a thatch roof on the side then the foundation will snap to the roof which you can demolish afterwards
Tested :)
Love ur way of taming. Brilliant and creative
“They shouldn’t be able to hit you from here”
Gets attacked...
? just use wooden or stone fence foundations to line one side of your gate trap. The gates snap to them for perfect 1-wide spacing. Then if you're building a blocking wall for one end with a hole for running through or pulling with a Ptera, you can right-angle the fence foundations across the gateframe to anchor the walls.
I'll be using the Argy trap. I got lucky and found a trapped one stuck in a tree but haven't had any luck trying to get a second one.
I have used it as my go to trap for most things for years
I always go for 2 gateways and 2 gates to trap argy. Works like a charm
Is their an effective trap for therizinosaurusse? Because they can damage stone. And I don't want to use metal for it.
they dont damage stone enough that they would break out
Unless you shooot nice and slow v.v
you can do the raft foundation with thatch then after the process of losing the thatch foundations you can then add stone foundations around the thatch one then demolish the thatch one and put stone in simple.

This was amazing, thank you! I made the raft one but I tweaked it a bit. Took it to Rex island and got a Rex! Again thank you so much!!!!
Dont call it rex island either carno island or dead island
i play on a official server, so i thought that those traps are a little bit expensive for me to use. but then i saw the last one and i thought: thats my trap. i can use it over and over again, and i can use it whereever i choose to! genius! thank you!
U can't take it to the volcano
Use a quetz with a trap on its back
Awesome vid really enjoyed it will come in handy with these ideas didn’t have to skip and didn’t want to because it was interesting and awesome 👏
Thanks for helping me so much
This helped a lot! Thanks CJ
I remember the good old days when ark was first released and u just stacked some movement speed to run faster then them and just shoot them and feed them with out any fences and clear the way of any predators :)
I still do that cause I’m to lazy
I must be crazy, the only creatures I use taming pens for are the big underwater bastards like the Mosa and Tuso, and on land for the Giga. These are some handy designs though, cheaper than I make mine, maybe I'll set some up in popular taming areas and make things easier on myself.
Thanks, I started my very first ark solo on hard mode and taming is a pain, need that beaver, the small trap is gonna help me a lot rn
Use 4 dino gates and 2 doors, creates a cage if you line them up and seal it with the doors. Much easier imo.
Best tips ever.. Thank you dude! 💪
On a serious note though, that raft pen was pretty nice. Going to give that a try.
