  • In the annals of naval history, the HMS Lion stands out as a symbol of courage and fortitude, with Admiral David Beatty at its helm, leading the British Fleet through the tempest of World War I. Join us on this gripping journey back in time as we unravel the extraordinary story of the HMS Lion, which not only served as Admiral Beatty's flagship but also defied fate by surviving not one but two catastrophic explosions. As a disclaimer the map animations are not entirely accurate and are there for you to get a general sense of where the ship was.

    Another eyewitness view of the Battle of Jutland is Stephen King-Hall's "North Sea Diary 1914-1917." Stationed aboard the light cruiser HMS Southampton at Jutland, it and its sister ship HMS Birmingham were the only two ships to take part in all four fleet battle actions during WW1. It also provides a look into the daily routine of a British junior officer, during patrols in the North Sea.

    Thank you all for watching, it feels good to be back! I hope you all enjoy it. Also I'd be remised if I didn't give redirect you all to an amazing video. I don't really know the guy, but his name is TTLP Productions and he produces some amazing animations. He recently made some videos about sinking the Bismarck! So here are the parts! Also the parts are narrorated by some people you all might know like The Mighty Jingles and Drachinifel.

    Edit: Sorry if there are a few audio glitches, I looked back in the original files and it seems to be some sort of issue with the upload.

    First read Captain MacIntyre’s book about Jutland as a teenager in the early 60’s. Thank goodness we had Jellicoein charge.
    Although the Grand Fleet could have he sensibly chose caution as in fact it was a strategic victory. The mutinous German sailors played an important part in the Revolution of 1918. 👍🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇺🇸

    My grandfather served as a Royal Marine on 'Lion' after her Jutland damage was repaired.
    His luck deserted him, going down with 'Courageous' during the first weeks of WW2.

    Bravo Zulu - but at 4:10 a common mistake - the 13.5" turrets were superimposed, NOT superfiring. Due to open sighting hoods in the turret roofs, no Royal Navy upper turrets before Hood had the ability to fire within 30 degrees of the turret below.

    My grandmother’s first husband served on her until he was killed at Jutland. He was in the RMLI (Royal Marine Light Infantry) and died as part of the gun / magazine crew - only two of these men survived!
    Beatty was NOT the hero he was made out to be! He insisted that the 1st Battlecruser Flotilla improved speed of firing and this could only be done by ignoring safety procedures - too much ammunition stored in hoist rooms / turrets and keeping flash proof doors open. This caused the battlecruser losses at Jutland (ie they blew up) - Lion only survived because the magazine was flooded, which killed the marines inside but saved the ship.

German?? breton, (surely an insult to the northern regions of Spain?). Many Northern Irish , Welsh, and Scots have the right to hate English Nationalism. I have been informed that the reason for Q turret instead of having a X turret, with a much greater arc of fire, was that the ship was a 'rush job'. While not having any data to argue with that statement, and agreeing that removing Q turret from the machinery spaces would have required a redesign to make up for the space used by placing the turret further aft, I don't know of any reason for this to have been a 'rush job' as there was no reason to believe war was imminent. In any case it does not explain why there were two more battle cruisers built with this configuration (Princess Royal and Queen Mary) before HMS Tiger.

    Magnificent to have you back onboard Captaine. Please could you do an account of HMS New Zealand. It's an unusual British naval vessel, that practically fought in all major WWI engagements. However it barely suffered a few casualties. Except in one ironically sad moment, when she collided with her sister ship, HMS Australia. Hehe the latter came off much the worst. Haha

      @ImportantNavalHistory  Рік тому +1

      I’d certainly do a video on New Zealand. I’m probably going to take a break from WW1 ships for a time as I have gotten tired of writing scripts on Jutland. But, she will certainly have a video in the future!

    How biased and uninformed is it that people scream with praise about haw many hit the German "Light Battleships" of 1stSC survived (though the British AP shells were defective) and those ships limped back home barely operational. In fact Seydlitz SANK!!!! outside harbour and was salvaged and put back into service.
    These same people sneer at Lion and Tiger which took almost as many hits from fully functional AP shells but he next day were still at sea and looking to reengage the Germans who ran screaming in terror for home.
    Why the praise for Scheer who blundered into a trap twice and Hipper who demonstrated only one battle tactic during the war, turn 180degrees and Run Away

    Basically its run to the guns, rapid fire, keep hitting, keep on hitting and hit hard, order of tha day, what they did back then, didn't mess about, there was no option for the British retreat, you stayed in line to the end, no matter what, that's how British saw it, period.good video

    Just a couple of things to help you .
    1- look at the Norman Friedman books on British ships and weapons, they arent cheap but are worth it for doing research.....they are a better source than Burt in my opinion
    2- Skagerrak by Gary Staff is an excellent view of the Battle of Jutland from the German PoV
    3- Understand the failings of Beattie during the battle of Jutland of the battlecruisers is complex.....stick 10 naval historians in a room to discuss this and you will leave with 12 opinions on this. Regardless if you blame Beattie, Seymour, Bentunck, Plunket or them in any combination it is best to accept apportionment of blame is ultimately meaningless unless you have an axe to grind (or book to sell). Personally i disagree with the viwpoint of the RN board enquiry, as it was dominated by people with a vested interest in not being blamed for the preceve lack of success.....as has been said before by one admiral to a journalists " if you try to get into my office and i throw you out....no matter how many bruises and cut i have afterwards to show for this "battle" you still did not get in...so who won!"

    • @ImportantNavalHistory
      @ImportantNavalHistory  Рік тому +1

      Well for starters I appreciate the comment and suggestions. As regards Doctor Friedman's books I have several of his books and I just happen to like Burt as I find his books easier to digest. I also have some of Gary Staff's work and he does some great stuff when I do German battlecruisers I use him as my main source. Finally, I agree that understanding Beatty's failures during the battle is something I don't anyone will fully comprehend and I try to steer clear of discussing opinions on the matter.

    Beattie was your classic gung ho commander, more interested in glory than strategic thinking. In that respect he was much like the Western Front generals. The public loved him bit many of the seamen despised him in his caviler attitude.
