I have an older version of the TH-9000, from what I gather the newer ones are blocked on TX for non ham frequencies, I haven't seen how to unblock the newer models. These are basically Alinco clones. Only issue I have with mine is poor quality audio from the speaker but if I use an external speaker or headphones it is fine. Hadn't used mine for a couple of years but took it out on the field a couple of weekends ago to do the Maine 2 meter simplex challenge. Hooked it up to an 18 amp/hr LiFeP04 battery and a 9 element Cushcraft Yagi and we had great results. 73 and Stay Free!
Buying a 220 by a major mfg can be a real challenge. That's why I went with the Chinese version. No whine and it performs well. It needs a fan for high power (it does get warm but mostly on high after extended use). I didn't use the disc to program it. The disc is the junkiest part of the 220. The main secret to programming is to program on the VFO mode (upper right button on the mic). Had to work a little to get the + or - programmed. Some instruction manual typos, ie the word iron instead of icon, made it a little harder but I got it. Once that was done, I was talking to repeaters 60+ miles away and had good reports.
Try disconnecting your solar charge controller and see if the high pitch whine goes away. A lot of those charge controllers are dirty and could be causing the problem. Or it could be the radio, but I'd try it and see.
Headphone users beware! 3:04 High Pitch frequency at 3:04 !!!! Other than that great review and great video! Also can you put the handheld radio link in the description? Or even do a review on it?
I had the very same complaint with the TYT TH-9800 quad band mobile I purchased. I sent it back for a replacement and he new radio did not have this issue. it is a defect in the radio and i would send yours back for warranty repair or replacement. My best guess due to the how constant the noise was and was present on every band I tried on the radio was that it was coming from the local oscillator.
+Brian Levin Ill definitely have to see about getting mine replaced or repaired, the noise is really annoying after a very short time. I should have as soon as i noticed the issue.
I just realised there was different versions and that they are only a certain hz range can the software change that or no I got the 400 version not knowing this but i need the version you got just curious any input on this would help greatly is it a lost cause or??
I bought one and have tried a few times but I can't figure out how to use it. So being man I bought another and still can't get it them to work... Can someone help me ????
It depends on the price, if you can get a single band yaesu radio for only a little more, then id highly suggest going with the yaesu. But if you can get this significantly cheaper and your budget is a bit tight for it, i would still recommend it.
+Bradley Neil Sipaun The Yaesu FT-2900R is what I'd suggest. they go for about $160 on Amazon. But this radio does preform well. it seems to put out a full 60 + watts. and the sensitivity of the reciver is good. The only thing I don't like about it is the lack of instruction for programming the radio with all of the frequency presets you want. but there are a few good videos and posts on how to do so.
I enjoy your radio vids, but am not all that interested in your other vids...sry, but as for computer and other projects having to do with that...well, I have built many many, computers as a hobby, and finally got burned out on them...my original reason for not going into the computer business. I started selling computers while working at Radio Shack way back when and even dabbled in programing. but found that I was too easily bored. Since then, I found a renewed interest in radio and astronomy along with photography. And the there is my small collection of guns...each having a specific purpose. Oh, and not to forget my having a great deal of fun racing motorcycles, skating, hunting, fishing, and reading Sci-Fi...lol, I know, a lot of GEEK all rapped up in being a jock, lol.
Why buy Chinese? You can get a new Yaesu FT2900R for that price. Super high quality, and 75 watts output, if you need it. Before buying Chinese, check for deals and closeouts on high quality equipment from amateur radio retailers.
The 2900 was replaced with the FT 2980 and the price of that has been on the rise for the last 5 years. The FTM 3100r (analog only) is only a couple of bucks more if not the same price as the TYT and 65 watts with a years with a 3 year warranty. Watch out for the Chinese cloned Yaesu's that are showing up on E Bay.
For the life of me, I don't know why someone would try to save 20-30 dollars on this instead of buying a Yaesu ft-2900r which is available for less than $150 dollars. I just ordered one. It is made in Japan and a suberb radio. But, you folks press on with your cheap chinese radios and its accompanying problems.
This was $100 cheaper when I got it than the closest yaesu. If it wernt on sale I would have gotten the 2 meter only yaesu. This is my first non handheld so I didn't have a varey big budget. When/if I get more serious into ham radio I'm going to get better radios. Right now I m looking for a used yaesu HF rig . But taking collage classes full time in electrical engineering right now I don't have the money to drop on a nice one.
+connly33 Yeah I'm just now getting in to ham radio myself. That's the same reason I'm looking at this. broke college student looking for a radio on the cheap haha. But I'm going to keep looking around and see what all is out there.
+Eli Brown Richards comment is still valid, as if you can get something like a yaesu for only a bit more I say do it, or if you can get something used. But if this ends up being the best option for your budget its honestly not to bad, mine has a slight problem with whine in the audio but as another commenter said its a defect that the manufacturer will replace your radio if you have an issue like that. Some of these Chinese company's are really stepping up there customer service game, like renogy who i use for solar panels, and thrunite who i use for flashlights have no questions asked replacement for the first few years.
It really is, i had to guess my way through it and play with the radio for quite awhile to acctually know how to do things like program in the memory slots.
its is utterly useless ? the only thing bad you say about it is the actual usage of it cause you dont know how to use it ? as for operation , this outperforms my yaesu !!
peter krawczuk The manual contains programming errors. Follow SOME of their directions, and some programming functions don't work. I had to guess my way through some of these functions to get them working. Also things people WOULD WANT TO DO LIKE PROGRAM A REPEATER SPLIT are NOT contained in the table of contents. You have to hunt through the manual to find it. Yet they go out of their way to list simplex (talk around) in the same table of contents. What gives with that? Eventually I got everything programmed the way I want, but I don't dare change any settings, and then have to go through hell all over again. Other than that its a nice addition to my radio room.

Rod Bish page 27 is wrong when describing how to set the repeater offset.Do not push the F button or it will never work use just the P4 button.
To program this radio by computer, download and install CHIRP from miklor.com. Makes programming easier and very straight forward.
Try disconnecting your solar charge controller and see if the high pitch whine goes away. A lot of those charge controllers are dirty and could be causing the problem. Or it could be the radio, but I'd try it and see.

Yes I just tested mine with a 20 Amp power supply and it only had fan noise from the power supply.
So what is the difference between the 9000D and the 9000? I have both and deciding if I need to install both or one. Thank you! 😊
I use Yaesu mono banders and needed 220mhz. The 220mhz version of the 9000 doesn't come close to the level of a Yaesu.
Can you run a headset instead of or in addition to the hand mike? Just asking for those of us with very loud vehicles
I just realised there was different versions and that they are only a certain hz range can the software change that or no I got the 400 version not knowing this but i need the version you got just curious any input on this would help greatly is it a lost cause or??
Thanks for the awesome video
Thank you for commenting, im glad you enjoyed it !
Did I miss the part about the scrambler? How does the scrambler work?
maybe you can tell me I can only get the stations in the 136 and to about 165, how can I get the other bands? any help thank you
Go nzo This model only does the 2 meter band. there are versions that do 220 and 440 but all of the 9000D's only do one band.
Returned the first one, tried again 42 watts on the second unit
Does 9000D have dual watch option?
how come there was NO high pitched whine when audio testing ?
There was, i demonstrated it at @3:07 in the video. Its at exactly 4Khz.
yes there was the audio at 3.07 , BUT later on when you did the actual voice testing there no whine...
It would be better to have heard a qso in progress or the radio opening a repeater.
I bought one and have tried a few times but I can't figure out how to use it. So being man I bought another and still can't get it them to work... Can someone help me ????
What is it that you are having issues with ? Ive been playing around with mine for quite awhile so ill help if i can.
Joe Elder it is a simple radio to program even by hand. I don’t see why anyone would have any issues?
I have the 220 version manual does not match radio 65 watts are in China watts....best i get 35 watts
Stan M I have two of them for 220 models and both do 60 watts on high power. Very nice radio and simple to program by hand.
I also have the 220 version. I get good audio reports on transmit while the receive is horrible -even on a remote speaker.
so do you recommend on getting this unit?

+connly33 yaesu what model? well my budget is a lil bit tight. but will check out the yaesu first tho. but this radio did it perform well?

Alibaba and Ali express is full of "new" Yaesu's that have been discontinued over 10 years ago.

I own this radio and the manual is UTTERLY USELESS!
