In a personal heath sense, rugby has come a long way in applying rules and regulations to make the sport safe. And you will see this in instances in older videos where players can make more "dangerous tackles" than what they can make today. As well as real-time concussion evaluation, where a player is taken off the field for 10 minutes to get assessed for a concussion. This made leaps and bounds in the safety of the game. Yes its still physical. Yes the players still love the game because it is physical. But in the same breath, we play this game from primary school (aged 6 or 7). The game is adjusted in rules to ensure the safety of the young ones. From the age of 13/14 you will start to play the same rules as the professionals do. Yeh, that is about all I can contribute to this video. Loving your reactions. Loving both American Football and Rugby. They are not the same sports, but deserves the same respect.
The greatest 10 (fly-half) of all time. So he was the most important player in the pitch. I’d say if you had to make a all-time team he’d be the first name most people would pick. Lomu was probably more dominant but Carter is way more important to a team. Think in football Tom Brady vs Calvin Johnson. Brady is the more important piece. Carter debuted in the early 2000s and is still playing today
Dan Carter has been active from 2003 or around that and he's not still officially retired at 38. He has been pure class in his preferred postion at 10, so sleek and perfect. Amazing distributor, cool head, great vision, crafty passing skills, perfect kicking either around the park or at the posts. Good in defence and as a tackler too. I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but, really he seemed to have it all. The definition of an all around player. Really, really impressive and scarely consistent too. Much as Richie McCaw, beyond being an amazing player, he has been also a very likable guy and a good role model also out of the field. About your questions. The number 10 is essentially the main playmaker: he is the one who makes the most of the thinking decisions and really steer the team around the park as it he sees it more profitable; he's usual the main distributor and many times the one at the kicking duty. The number 9 is the other playmaker on the team, but his action is more focused on organizing the play of the forwards around the contact points or the set-pieces. He has to be on point on the speed and accuracy of his passing skills from that contact points to the 10 in open space, in order to give him time to think and execute the next play efficiently. He's also has to be able to execute a wide range of kicks as well. Finally, I have to agree with you on the essence of rugby and other contact sports that put also much stress on team work: they are special and they can't left you indifferent emotionally. But, even if I fully recognize the importance of the contact in rugby and maybe that was also what attracted me to it the most, I never think of Rugby UNION as a "violent" sport: it's physical, sometimes brutal, but never violent. In it you want to dominate physically your adversary, but never harm him consciously. And you're right: contact sports teach respect for who stands out to you on the field and that lead naturally to respecting the opposition, the rule of engagement (as the rule of the game), the officials. In rugby, I've expirienced the sense of brotherhood not only within my team, but also with the adversaries at the end of every game: after all, that was a war we fought together even if on opposite sides. A shared experience, not to forget.
I am glad to hear you're enjoying this beautiful sport. The big difference for me in why Rugby will one day be known as the ultimate sport is the mantra that is a sport for ALL shapes and sizes. Every single body type is included, and I love that. Shout out to the props out there, you are warriors!!
What Carter makes him the best was his ability to make the others around him better players as well as being a game breaker with silky skills and ice cool goal kicking. Stephen Larkham was freaky talented and his running game was better than Carter imho but he didnt lift the team like Carter did
At the 2015 world cup there was a greatest of all time, mccaw and carter were there obviously but Jona Lomu was the greatest left wing, he was in the semi pro to pro era and changed the physicality forever. RIP Jona
Yup as a South African... Even we rate him one of the best fly halves of all time... Loved how he could boss a game.. Something the current crop of nz fly halves seem to lack at the moment... I dunno... They just missing something...
10 Controlls the back line... Runs the plays and determines the type of game they play... I think boks are one of the few teams that uses the 9 to boss the game...
More then just his playing skills, his management, leadership, attack and defense stategies all relative to senior players like Dan and Richie. Its a full time job, on and off the field.
The 10 is the 1st 5 or Fly half. He's the playmaker. The Tom Brady of Rugby. He's a back similar to offence. So if you see the numbers 9 to 15, they are all backs (the speedsters and finishers). Forwards or Defence are the engine room guys, guys wearing numbers 1 to 8....they do the hard work so the backs can make magic.
Yeh, I'm going to respond to your questions, sorry if the answers have already been made in the comments. Yes we in South Africa love Dan Carter, we respect the number 10 position, because like in football (the quarterback), It is a pivotal position, and also called the Fly-half (scrum-half is no 9, you'll see him around the scrum and rucks), he will decide what play to make. Dan Carter was and is still one of the best play makers in this sport. He is a good kicker as well, both in play, and field goals.
In rugby: 1 = Loosehead Prop 2 = Hooker 3 = Tighthead prop 4 = Stronger of the two locks generally 5 = The brains for the locks 6 = Blindside in the rest of the world, openside for South Africa and I believe France. Not so much opnen/blind as a 6 or 7 though. 7 = Reverse of the above 8 = Invented, I believe, by the kiwis who had a "roamer" the 8th man. 9 = Scrumhalf 10 = Flyhalf 11 = Left wing (needs to be very quick) 12 = Inside centre 13 = Outside centre 14 = Right wing (needs to be very quick 15 = Fullback (needs to be steady under a high ball, quick-ish and good on defense) Of course, those are gross exagerations but that's the gist of it. The kiwis can explain 1st 5 and so on as alternatives. The modern scrum was invented by RSA in the 1930s.
Watch the British and Irish Lions tour back in 2005, Dan Carter single handily destroyed them in Game 2 in Wellington, scored all the All Blacks points in the second half
Rugby doesn't have the head injuries like Football . You have to remember that although Rugby doesn't have the money like Football . It's a massive international sport with a excellent governing body that make sure players are looked after. Rugby is safer then Football,on the whole. Rugby is not under threat like Football.
Ther scrum half is number 9,he feeds the ball to the backline from the scrum,First 5,or Fly Half as they call it up North,is number 10,is usually the main distributor to the rest of the backline, not always, but mostly.
I don't think the video you chose here showed the best of Carter. Maybe have a look at some extended highlights of the 2nd All Blacks test against the British and Irish Lions in 2005. Widely considered the greatest individual performance ever.
I don't know about Football but Rugby will never die . It's safer, the injuries aren't as prolific as in Football. Rugby has safer guidelines which some of your coaches are starting to utilise, especially around tackling. The other big factor is , although Rugby doesn't have the money Football does .Rugby is international and played all over the world , it's epic and has a very rich international history . Rugby is also not as complicated as Football and accepts players of all sizes . Love your reactions.
Please react to "Portia Woodman - Unstoppable". Don't reject just because it's a female name - she is a member of the Black Ferns, the female All Blacks. Just as tough as the men.
As kiwi congratulations on the RWC! So good to see the Bokkies back after a few years of “kak”😉😂 . I’m saying it! The bokkies are and always will be our main rivals. We love RSA rugby and their supporters!!
Horse Footrot Absolutely mate! NZ vs SA is the best rivalry in rugby! It’s at its best when both teams are strong. Looking forward to the Rugby Championship 😊
Kyle Driscoll haha yeah mate, the fear of playing the bokkies is back and I love it! I’ve a lot saffa mates and the banter and piss taking is back too. Some of the best rugby I’ve ever watched is the AB’s getting beaten preferably by RSA. I’m also an Aussie now too. The Wallabies wish they were our rivals...yeah keep wishing! I’d rather play you guys in the Bledisloe Cup.. best of three against you guys. Mouth watering rugby for me.. lekker!
10=fly. Flys are often exceptional kickers but as importantly the have to be quick - quick to pass the ball, quick to break through the like and quick to choose where the attack goes next
I respect you bro for trying your best to learn about the sport, I'm australian and i know exactly what you mean about "that thing about it" with rugby and american football - its the competition and physicality and potential for injury without caring about that. Ive played first grade rugby for 3 years so far and broke both hands respectively in two years, its just the way it goes sometimes for the love and the brotherhood
#10 is usually called Fly-half. He's the guy one out from the Scrum-half. He initiates the wide attack by passing or kicking to the backs. Together with the #9 they basically control the game. The harmony between the pair usually dictates the personality of a teams play. "Woah! Looks like he put some curve on that." I'm pretty sure that's just him playing the wind on a gusty night. Not saying it isn't impressive. I'm not sure on his retirement date. I think it was 2 years ago. He didn't play in the last World Cup (2019) but he played in the previous two. A guy you've reacted to replaced him on the ABs. Beauden Barrett.
This guy Carter was brilliant! Absolutely brilliant! What a bugger of a thorn he was for South Africa and the rest of the world but we can only admire him.
The Flyhalf is basically the one who runs the plays for the backline and he's like the general on the field he knows where the ball is and where it's going to be nothing goes by without the flyhalf knowing about it
Not in the UK, scrum half (9),fly half/stand off (10), then inside and outside centres (12 &13) respectively, so I guess you are from Aus or AZ? We don't do 5/8th stuff
If you're looking to watch some current games there is the Super Rugby Aotearoa going on in NZ right now

Dan the man had a great rugby IQ. I’m biased as kiwi. He was always composed and cool under pressure.
I think they've both said that the other is their virtual equal and they're honoured to be mentioned alongside them
Dan Carter and Brian o Drisscol would be the first names on the team sheet .
Dan Carter has been active from 2003 or around that and he's not still officially retired at 38.

Very well & clearly explained & put; unusually for me, I've nothing to add. Why gild the lilly?
Caspar von Sader thanks for your comment. But I did forget to mention so many things!
Carter retired from international play at the end of 2015. He is still playing but in lower level competitions around the world....
I'm south African and Dan Carter will forever be my all time favorite
Hmmm as a kiwi. We love RSA and their supportersL Congratulations on the RWC!!
I am glad to hear you're enjoying this beautiful sport. The big difference for me in why Rugby will one day be known as the ultimate sport is the mantra that is a sport for ALL shapes and sizes. Yeah Carter could marshal the troops under pressure.
Carter was a pretty good defender, Larkham wasn't. After Gregan no 10 in Australia has had a world class 9, Carter had 4 world class 9's.
Im a kiwi who prefers league but loved watching Larkham play.
He's definitely one of my favourite union players
At the 2015 world cup there was a greatest of all time, mccaw and carter were there obviously but Jona Lomu was the greatest left wing, he was in the semi pro to pro era and changed the physicality forever. RIP Jona
Something different, please check out best bits of Nigel owens. Greatest rugby ref and a legend with his quotes.
Agree, he’s effin hilarious and a great ref!!
Put it simply, 10 is literally the quarterback of Rugby...period
He officially retired yesterday. The greatest 10 (fly half, 1st 5/8, out half, whatever you call it) the the professional era.
I'm French and when he came, he win the title with my favorite team (USAP)
9 scrum half, 10 fly half.
Whats always underlooked is Carters Defense , he was also a elite tackler
Yup as a South African... Even we rate him one of the best fly halves of all time... Loved how he could boss a game.. Something the current crop of nz fly halves seem to lack at the moment... I dunno... They just missing something...
Kiwi here. Well we love the Bokkie and their supporters! Congratulations the RWC! Great to see you guys are back!!
Played between 2003 and 2015. Highest points scorer in Rugby Union International Test match history with 1598 points.
He played for French racing 2016 2017 and plays for blues 2020 but stop playing all blacks 2015.

You should go watch the documentary they made of him. Dan Carter: the Perfect ten.
As a South African, that movie is breathtaking
Rugby does not have blockers, rugby has tacklers no shepherding, or blockers as you say.
Respect to Dan Carter and the All Blacks from South Africa
Dan Carter was the best 10 and the best kicker of all time
10 is the general on the field, his like the playmaker
Very interesting video ♥♥! As a current UA-camr, I am always looking for creative ideas! Good Job!
The greatest flyhalf of all time! I’m South African and he is amazing

@@horsefootrot8044 for me the fear of playing the Boks,or anyone for that matter, has escalated now that Foster is the AB coach.
Richard Scanlan I am so hoping your fears are unfounded...as I agree with you!
lomu is the best of all time he scored 122 tries
Dude, react already ffs
he retired in 2015
Carter retired after winning the World Cup in 2015 with his captain mccaw was active for about 12 years I think...
10=fly. Flys are often exceptional kickers but as importantly the have to be quick - quick to pass the ball, quick to break through the like and quick to choose where the attack goes next

You should support a Major League Rugby Team man! How about the Dallas Jackals when they start next season
The greatest rugby player of all time Jonah Lomu
Dan Carter is playing for the Auckland blues atm.
That was Internationally played for another 2-3 years in France to make the big club bucks
The Flyhalf is basically the one who runs the plays for the backline and he's like the general on the field he knows where the ball is and where it's going to be nothing goes by without the flyhalf knowing about it
Hahah yeah mate Richie and Dan played together mate. They were the AB leaders for a long time.
Wish they showed his banana kick
10 is fly half or half back, makes the plays FYI
Fly half and halfback are 2 different positions, mate. Scrum half = Halfback, Fly half = 1st Five Eighth.
Not in the UK, scrum half (9),fly half/stand off (10), then inside and outside centres (12 &13) respectively, so I guess you are from Aus or AZ? We don't do 5/8th stuff
