We actually have nine colonies! We caught a lot of swarms this year but only three colonies were ready for honey extraction. Thank you for following and for the awesome comment. :)
ohhhhhhhhh cut comb honey is sooooooo good plus brings a higher price in retail. the old timers in jackson county distrusted honey sold in jars unless they knew the source.
You should take those end honey frames. On a Layens hive the bees don't move through the hive eating the honey. They will consume the honey at the top of the brood frame they are on.
Thanks for the comment! We keep our bees with ten frames based off the teachings of Dr. Leo Sharashkin. While I agree seven is probably sufficient I like to play the safe game and leave them with ten if the colony is strong. In the spring when we do their yearly inspection we will remove the frames off the end that they don't need and harvest the honey. :)
Wow what beautiful clear honey!! What flowers ect do your bees feed on - my honey is always a dark colour because of all the gum trees ect that we have here in Tasmanian- love the videos keep up the good work 👍
Firstly I'd like to say that I enjoy your content. While I myself am a natural beekeeper and have followed Dr. Leos work and read his translations, I would just offer this small piece of advice. Find your own way as a bee keeper. Leo may be a great starting point but he is no means the end all and you often quote him like scripture (I really dont mean this to be offensive and maybe your style is his teaches im not trying to judge so I apologize if it seems like I am.) I believe that anyone regardless of experience has something to offer to the bee keeping community, at it would be exciting to see what over time you come up with on your own as a contribution to this craft. Best of luck in your endeavor you're doing great, I haven't seen all of your uploads so I may have missed an important video about your style.
Thank you very much for your comment, I attribute a lot to Dr. Leo because it was through him we were able to discover Layens. If it wasn't for Dr. Leo we probably wouldn't even be beekeepers because of our failures with traditional styles. I will say there are things he does that we do have disagreements with, and in the end the person we emulate the most is Fedor Lazutin. His book is our beekeeping bible and we have found the most success with Lazutins teachings. Still, I have to give credit to Dr. Leo because he allowed us to find Lazutin and that is why we have what we have today. I will always credit Dr. Leo even though I don't agree with everything he does currently. I'm not sure where he will take his style but our style will always be based off of "Keepings Bees with a Smile".
@@SecureAcresNaturalBees Thanks a lot for the reply, what you said makes a lot of sense. I look forward to seeing your journey in the future Layens is a really fun hive to work with and my preferred as well.
I have two layens. I can’t justify the extractor at this time. Do you entirely harvest by crush and strain? Crush and strain is my option at this point in time.
Hey Rhonda, The comb floats to the top of the Honey so the most we do is let it sit over night and remove the comb with a spoon in the morning. We think little filtering helps reserve the pollen count and nutrients.
You say several times at the 15:00 mark that you are "going to run it through a filter". I was very surprised at this. At one point you said you were going to filter it three times!!! This is why I asked the question.
hi how are you. Can you please tell me what the capacity of your press is. Would it be ten litres may be. I am just trying to track one down here in Australia. Thanks
@@SecureAcresNaturalBees I'm working on producing a poly layens hive with plastic frames. Mostly because it is very simple. I'm going with 12 frame boxes but people tell me that is too small and will get filled too fast. I plan on using Taranov split methods to multiply hives and also use a divider board to make starter 6 frame swarm traps (when a swarm moves in, after a week or two, remove the divider and voila. Wondered what you thought?
Beautiful poem on your forestry hive.

i'm so happy to see young people doing what i want to do also... which is layens frames on a big box and extracting honey by press... cheers bro
I cant wait to see your hives increase. I found dr. Leo about the same time you started up. You are encouraging me greatly.

I was thinking the same thing.
That Honey Press looks really cool, Thanks for the videos.
Awesome looking hives. Good that you didn't take too much honey.
About time u make another video I missed your videos bro keep them coming
That was awesome. I"d love to come to see the hives and get some honey - if there's enough! ;)
I love you all - Cousin Stephanie
Thank you so much Stephanie! We'll definitely have to ship yall some!
Great Video ! That is a neat Extractor.
I love you all attitude
I like the process. Hope you continue the video getting the crust comb out and making the wax bar
We're excited about the wax! We've never processed wax before so it should be an interesting video.
Thanks for sharing!!🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝👍

Your honey sure looked good. Hope it tasted as good as it looked. Enjoyed the video!

Mostly mountain wild flower but one we do have in particular is sourwood! Beautiful tree that the Bees love.
@@SecureAcresNaturalBees lovely long blooms on the sourwood - lots of nectar there 👍
I have never seen new kerr half gallon widemouth jars. I only find ball. Where did you get them?
They are old jars and we can't really recall where we got them, It might have been Walmart but a while back. Sorry we don't know more.

We just crush and strain, works well for us!

How do you filter after pressing? How do you get the wax out of the press and clean the press? Thanks for the help!

We used to use filters but now we basically just press and remove the comb.
good video
Thank you so much and thanks for stopping by!
Do you remove all the comb and start out with a new starter strip every year? Thanks guys your video.
Thank you! Yes we always put a new frame with a starter strip when adding frames to a colony.
Do you give thr frames back to the bees like they are?

Hey Roderick,
Doing good! The Basket is 2.3 Gallons or 8.7 Liters. Hope that helps.
Those are 14 frame boxes?
Hey John, sorry for the late reply.
Yes all the hives in this video were 14 Frame.

Haven't seen any yet but that would be great if we caught some!
My Request to your company to supply and do a Honey manufacturing company in my place Bhubaneswar city in Odisha state in India
