  • Join me today as I find interesting place to checkout in Rolla Missouri. On one of my road trips, I stopped by some of Rolla’s quirky, weird and historic spots. I found Stone Henge and the Phelps County Bank and their old jail and courthouse. 😃

The “high school” is the Dillon courthouse. It was donated by my Great grandmother Marjorie Bowling. She was born inside that building in 1908. Here’s the catch. It’s not in its original spot. The original spot was east of town in Dillon, Missouri. This building is where Phelps county was founded!

Oh, my dad helped build that modern Stonehenge in Rolla, MO. I lived, worked, and went to school in Rolla. I am sure it changed a lot since I was there. Oh, the best flat bread pizza was off the main street . I was b and raised in St. James..ten miles East. Ppl like to think mid America r all dullards but almost all the kids I knew went on to graduate college. I visited the jail in a time when veg over grew it.

She went to a one room school that was still up in 70's...but...they didn't live in town...so their school was literarily across the way over a creek and up some hills and over fences...it was fun to go there almost every visit...then my mom built a house on land Grandpa gave her...so we were there a lot...it's a nice all weather home...

That old log cabin is not nor ever was Rolla High School. It is an old settlers cabin they moved near the Old Courthouse to preserve it. I think it is called Dillon Cabin. The cabin was originally near the country club. I am not sure how you got the idea it was a high school.

You got me curious so I pull up the raw video and zoomed in. That big stone plaque said high school and there was another stone that was harder to read and I think it said Rolla lodge. That’s how I got the idea it was a high school. I just read the sign.

An interesting video! I always like going through small towns with their original facades. If you are ever in Washington State, Maryhill, by the Columbia River, has a reproduction of Stonehenge made of concrete. And in Georgia, east of Athens and near the South Carolina border, are the Georgia Guidestones. They also use angles and cutouts to capture the sun at certain times of year. Just found both of those last year. Keep up the good work of finding and showing us these unique places!

I find this fascinating. I became curious about Rolla, while giving the Arthur L. Bradford prize for excellence in Shakespeare studies at Buffalo State College in Buffalo New York. Arthur Lenox Bradford grew up in Rolla but came to Buffalo where he served on the college faculty from 1947-1973 and was chair of the English department from 1947-1957. He was a Shakespearean Scholar and taught courses in Milton, Elizabethan drama, and Victorian prose and poetry. Professor Bradford also initiated and taught courses in the literature of the Bible and served as the faculty advisor to the Inter-varsity Christian Fellowship. He was gifted writer whose short stories and essays were published in the Yale Review and Peabody Journal of Education. Professor Bradford was devoted to Buffalo State, and even endowed a generous scholarship here, but when he died, he had his remains returned to Rolla! Seeing the town, and places that would have been familiar to Professor Bradford gives me an understanding of why he felt so connected to that place. Thank you for the video.

Ah, Rolla Missourah (Missouri for more... civilized folk). The middle of absolute (insert string of profanities here) nowhere. Without the college, this place would sink into the Ozarks, and no one would miss it. The college is a place of its own, and as a student currently attending it, it is full of excitement, dread, misery and frustration. Would you ever regret attending it? Hell no! What did it cost? Sanity and a social life (but if you're attending this place, you didn't have one in the first place). It was all worth it, just earn money and laugh at your classmates that went to Mizzou and are now working as a Starbucks barista.

Like the other towns/cities in that area... Lots of corruption especially in the police and courts.
