I'm just now hearing the depth of of your WHOLE video thread line. So I'm giving myself a year to respond. Just what the Dr. ordered. Don't stop, you're needed.
Viva Cuba!
Francois Viguie That's great to hear. Please let me know if I can help in any way with your new Tres. I have many videos explaining the different setups and tunings you can use. It must have been amazing to spend time with Pancho... To me he is the pinnacle of Tres perfection and I hope to meet him someday. Cheers.
Nice! If you're looking to buy a Tres I make and sell Tres Conversion Kits for Baby Taylor guitars, just like the ones I use in my videos. I sell them on my website: www.treskits.com Take a look. And thanks for watching! Cheers.
That's great to hear... Mine are all small guitars that have been converted into Tres Cubanos. I have instructions on how to do it if you're interested. Just look in playlists on my channel and select conversions. Thanks for watching! Cheers.
Maravilloso!!!! Una duda, cuando hay tumbao en guitarra, no hay lugar para el piano cierto? el piano también tumba, entonces hay que ir o por uno por el otro cierto?
Alexander Torres Right...It does sound like that. I totally agree, ridiculous control and note clarity. Have you checked out Renesito Avich’s new record ‘Solo’? Pretty damn good but he’s no Pancho. Super clean lines, worth a listen. Cheers.
if your playing Am with your finger on the 1st fret, second string, wouldn't that note be a C#? therefore making an A major? Or is your tres tuned like a guitar G,B,E?
Chris Loney Hi Chris, Yup...I’m tuned to GBE for this one. It’s how Pancho always tunes. Occasionally I’ll do a tutorial tuned that way but most of the time I’ll transcribe to standard GCE. Thanks for taking a look! Cheers.
This is great. I'm a life long student of Cuban and Puerto Rican music, but new to playing the tres. Is it common to move between the two tunings? GCE and GBE? Do most players settle into one tuning and stick with it? Thanks! Having spent time in Cuba and Puerto Rico, I know the feeling of capturing the real stuff right there on the street. More rich journeys to you, my friend!
Hello, Welcome to the channel! Generally most players learn tuned to GCE and occasionally tune one step up to ADF# (sometimes called Havana tuning). It is quite rare to find a player in Cuba tuned to GBE. In all of my years of going down there I have never come across a single one... Pancho Amat is the only player I know of that actively tunes that way permanently. I tune to GCE 99% of the time. The big question is the setup for your Tres, do you play Traditional or Modern? With Traditional you’ll have two octave string courses (on the E & G courses) and with Modern you’ll have just one (on the G course). Do you have a Tres? If not or if you’re looking for a new one I make and sell Tres conversion kits for Baby Taylor guitars. Check out my site: www.treskits.com there’s also more info about Tres setups on there too. Thanks for taking a look! Cheers.
Simeon Perlin Thanks! Yeah, I played guitar for over 25 years when I switched to the Tres. Check out my website: www.treskits.com where I make and sell Tres Cubano Conversion kits for Baby Taylor guitars. Thanks for watching! Cheers.
I hope this helps and finds you. So the tumbao is that syncopated rhythm that’s played with the melody. It’s what gives the melody it’s percussive aspect if you will. (Son) Montuno is just a genre of Cuban music that will probably incorporate a tumbao rhythm. Basically, the tumbao makes you dance. At the start of this vid, the tresero is playing a tumbao for example but if he were to stop pausing in between some of the notes, it would just be a melody.
Larry 321321321 Sorry, I transcribe all of the songs for my tutorials myself so I don't have the Tab for any of them... Thanks for watching though. Cheers.
Hola mi amigo estoy empezando a tocar tres y me gusta mucho ver tus vídeos.
Hi Alejandro, It's a converted Baby Taylor. I developed a conversion kit that I sell on my website: www.treskits.com I make each one by hand. The Baby Taylor is the perfect candidate for conversion due to it's size, tone and build quality. The kit is $200 (USD) and I ship them for free anywhere in the world. Thanks for taking a look! Cheers.
Hello Enmanuel, It's super difficult to find a decent Tres unless you live in Cuba or a major city in Europe. That's why I started TresKits.com where I sell kits for converting Baby Taylor guitars into Tres Cubanos, just like the ones I play. Check it out. Since launching in January I've sold 28 kits to 13 different countries. Thanks! Cheers.
pete swing It depends...how I'm tuned can be found in the description of the video along with the string gauges I use and other info. Thanks for watching! Cheers.
I had no idea that this instrument existed - thanks for all the education & instruction on this channel! This may be totally out of left field, but I could totally hear a tres cubano rendition of Tom Waits’ “Hoist That Rag” - it’s definitely draws heavy inspiration on Cuban music, especially in the rhythm, chord structure, and Marc Ribot’s guitar solo, which pulls from this song nearly note for note! Apologies if you’re not familiar with Tom Waits and this is a super weird song out of the blue! ua-cam.com/video/orxPuV06jgM/v-deo.html
You’re kidding, right? I’ve been to Cuba over 20 times and studied with some of the best players on the island. I know what the instrument is called. Cheers.

This is really good amigo!!! very helpful, now I want to buy a tres to learn from your videos!!

Man the tone and control in his fingers! It literally sounds like he’s using a volume pedal and swelling the volume in.
Alexander Torres

not cool to use Pancho Amat in your video. Make your own videos, but don't lift his videos.
Oye, he is not lifting Amat's video? It's used with respect and his channel is not monetized. ...Solamente un idota como tu!
