Everyone seems to complain about poor acceleration. Test drove one last week and fully expected to be unimpressed based on the reviews about the HP and acceleration and I was actually quite surprised at how peppy and responsive the car is. To compare I also tested a 2.5L Forester and the Forester seemed sluggish, like I was driving a small pickup truck.
+fishynets I agree. It's no sports car that is for sure, but as a daily driver 148 hp is more than enough to get the job done. I'm thinking the philosophy with the engine performance is for gas mileage. The car will get you places and while you won't be beating any sports cars in a drag race this car isn't designed for that. It is an all purpose vehicle that can get you almost anywhere efficiently and safely.
People seem to really bash on the CVT and I don't see why. I've put 33k on my impreza and like the CVT even offroading with it last weekend was perfectly fine. Never an issue passing/accelerating either.
Test drove one about a week ago. Funny story i was my Subaru dealership in the Houston Area and well i was test driving a used 2006 Toyota RAV4 Limited and well kind of ran into some problems with the RAV4 nothing major anyway while with the salesmen he was talking to me about the XV Crosstrex and i have always wanted to test drive one. Well we wait for the one of the salesmen to come and low and behold i got my chance to drive a crosstrex. The first time i sat in it i was blown away. It really fit me. And i wanted one but i am having to hold off on getting one since the price is high. But i love the crosstrex. All of the improvements Subaru made since 2013 have been at the highest level. Only one issue Subaru needs to upgrade that boxer engine. Don't get me wrong its good but it needs more power to do passing. But i love it. One car on my list that i would love to buy for me and my girlfriend to enjoy. Not to knock off on the RAV4 the RAV4 is still one of my favorites.
I'm getting my first car this upcoming month. Still trying to decide between the 2016 Honda Civic Sedan and the 2016 Subaru Crosstreck. Always wanted an SUV but love the way the honda looks. This is a real tough one..
i have a 2016 crosstrek and it's sluggish! Especially when merging on to the highway. Also it does take a sec when you shift to reverse and then drive.
You are right CVT and low horse power for such a capable car. I wish they just tuned it for 25 more ponies and torque. 2.0L these days can easily get 200hp. I guess they are trying their best to for great fuel economy but it really sacrifices horse power.
I'm trying to decide bw the Outback and the Crosstrek, price is not an issue. Sitting behind the wheel they are identical, even materials. I'm just not sure if I want to carry that extra space around all the time though, but I also fear I'll regret not having it if I need it
+matt k Go for the Crosstek! If you need something bigger you'll know it right off the bat, and there's always trailer hitches and roof racks if you need them. :)
+matt k Get the Outback, the Crosstrek is noisier and weak, the Outback has more HP and is a much better vehicle. Gas mileage isn't that much different, check it out on fuelly.com. Read reviews, I have the 3.6 and love it, but I have had the 2.5 also and its good to.
I find this CUV pretty good after driving it through 2 Eastern Canadian winters and go off roading on weekends. Sure it's not fast, but you don't buy a CUV with almost 9" of ground clearance and a NA 2.0L engine for speed. Edit, your video's sound is awful, way too loud and distorted even when I have the volume at the lowest I can while still hearing you speak. Did enjoy the rest.
I don't understand either why alot of cars don't have audible warnings along with the back up camera. The "fish eye" lense on back up cameras don't make it easy to judge distance.
The Cadillacs are the best at warning you. The sears vibrate and give you a sensation in your buttocks lol.. But yeah some do and dont. I'm in a valet operation so I drive a lot of cars. When it comes to sensors like that the Tesla ranks supreme. Both in the rear camera display and the digital sensors. It even has a numerical read out for the distance left. Range Rovers and Jaguars are severely lacking considering what you pay for the vehicle. It's too low and the resolution is pretty poor. I'm content with Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep.. I have a Durango and it has good display visual display and has audible sensor. It goes a step above and has an additional sensor for when a vehicle is crossing behind you as you are backing up. I don't have a issue with it but some may because the visually guideline bars are on the tach yet the rear view camera view is on the center console so shifting glances between the two may be troublesome for some.
Why are these OEM's jumping into the CVT craze, when most people who actually know about cars, just hate them. I guess most buyers are not aware, not do they care what kind of transmission their cars have, just as long as they are automatics.
The majority of car buyers don't care about what transmission a car has but rather how it does on gas mileage. Plus, CVTs are getting better and feel like a traditional automatic. It no longer hangs but rather adapts to your driving. They still have that hanging redline rev which I hate but 90% of the time drivers won't redline their cars. I went from an 2014 Mitsubishi Evo X to a 2016 Honda Accord Sport with CVT and really, it doesn't bother me at all. It serves great as my daily driver.
The amenities and ergonomics are poor. Considering what they are selling, the top of line model well equipped should sell for no more than $19,000. What ever happened to performance> Why no REAL bumpers so you could attach a winch? Advanced tech? Only in their dreams. It seems like a powder puff 4x4. Recaro seats should be included. an off road model without carpeting should also be available. Engine bays are no place for plastic. Plastic intake manifold? Get real.
Subaru is still ugly at least in the interior department! Dave, how about your Fiat 500X offroad impressions since you never drove one until this event. Btw, I don't plan to buy the 500X but curious and want your opinion.
legit considered getting this until I realized the lack of performance. I then thought of a VW Tiguan because of the 2.0L. Ultimately I went for the Dodge Durango. Granted I can't say I chose the Durango over the Crosstrek because it is in a different class but I couldn't be happier!!

Greets, Dave. The CVT isn't killing the acceleration; it is the modest 148HP of the motor.

Would like to see more from Subaru in your channel
5:39 when the car on ur left is going forward reeaalllyy slow and u think ur car is rolling backward lol
Love this car. Bought one back in December. Great lil' family hauler. Awesome in the snow. Great MPGs also!
+Kyle Fosnes You nailed it... great points!
Before I even watch the video, I like it right away. Dave is such a relatable guy.
+dontbotherreading Love you!
I'm relatable too right OP
I like the seat combination color and the stitching around the steering wheel
I wanted to love that car, but the body roll I did not like. I'll stick with my Impreza for now. Nice to see you reviewing a Subaru.

So, at the end, which one did you choose? Same dilemma here..
Here in the Pacific Northwest you can't go far without seeing a Subaru.
There is no doubt Dave did a bunch of blow before and during this review. He looks like fear and loathing in Las Vegas!!!!!
i have a 2016 crosstrek and it's sluggish! Especially when merging on to the highway. Also it does take a sec when you shift to reverse and then drive.
Finally a Subaru here!
Thinking about getting the 2017 crosstrek. Have you had a chance to drive it yet? Any impressions?

bikephil haha, the old Lesbaru joke
sunglasses are crooked ahahahahhahah
+Dustin Burgess Yep.
Which is better, crosstrek or outlander sports?

How's the cabin noise on highway speeds? I find mine (a 2015) to be on the noisier side when I drive >70mph
I don't understand either why alot of cars don't have audible warnings along with the back up camera. The "fish eye" lense on back up cameras don't make it easy to judge distance.
+Eric Oberhaus I appreciate the feedback.

Manny Talavera
Well I've read that Honda does a good CVT, the same cannot be said for Nissan and Subaru
+pedro fernandez Subaru's CVT transmissions are consistently being rated as some of the best in the industry.
that must have been a mouth full in the begining
DO THE MDX!!
+Kylo Ren Eventually, I will, thank you, Kylo.
Pretty short test this year las year it was like a runway!
+Kylo Ren I agree, that's what I included some extra video from inside and additional specs.
Subaru Excellent
Dem blue blockers be crooked
+50ccAdventure I noticed that too... after the fact. Looks dorky!
+Everyman Driver I think you meant gangsta ;-D
+Eric Oberhaus Ok, maybe a little gangsta :-)
Your sunglasses are all crooked lol
+yuanz90 Are you sure? :-)
no sunroof on the crosstrek?!
Probably not on this trim. Other trims have it.
Subaru is really trying to piss Honda and Acura off like don't copy the double screens! God

Your bitching is pathetic. Recaro seats? What the fuck do you think you are buying? A lambo?

+denault3985 Good questions.. I'm still working on putting together all my videos...
Subaru is a off road vehicule and the Fiat 500 X is a city car
xv is awesome!
+ron s It's no longer called the XV... FYI :-)
148hp? thats weak. ill pass.

Thank thing is ugly inside and out. I only wish styling inside and out was done by VW. Not enough rear leg room
I would say a Tiguan in your case but the Golf R has legit more cargo space and when I realized that I was totally over the Crosstrek real quick lol..
+RyBegz44 Subaru is a off road vehicule and the VW is a city car
