    Our neighbors are insanely careless and let their un-neutered cats out, causing multiple litters to roam around our neighborhood. They all seem to love our carport and we’ve been feeding them. We’ve been taking care of them ever since they were teeny tiny, and now they’re almost full grown :3 ( We actually let one into our home, even though my father is allergic. He is the runt of his litter actually. ). I’ve been watching your videos to make things for our many feral-ish cats. These are the best videos and make everything sound incredibly simple. Don’t stop making these! Also, your cats are really good helpers XD.

      Maybe try to get them spayed and neutered, so as to keep them from multiplying. Trap, neuter, return. Seems the owners don't care enough to be bothered, I wouldn't be worried about consulting them first.
      There are cat agencies out there to help with this. Also, our local animal control is run by the sheriff's dept, they do it for free if you catch the cats and call them. They will also give them medical care if injured. They give them the shots they need too. Then they need to be returned to where they came from, you may have to pick them up.

    People used to try to tell me that cats are independent, they do their own thing...rubbish I never ever get a moment alone. ..even in the bathroom I have a cat audience or if I managed to get in without them they are beating on the door like a SWAT raid..I have no idea how they make that noise but it isn't worth shutting them out lol!

      its just a stereotype and the reason why some cats are like that is cus the humans dont acknowledge thecats in first place so then they think that its the cat wants to be alone they dont yes maybe sometimes they do but they dont

      My cats are the exact same way so I think in general cats just adapt to their environment, at least more so than dogs. When I go on vacation for a week I feel like my cats are fine and they enjoy the solitude while it lasts. But they are smart enough to know that if their "parent" is home that most likely means food, play and affection so of course theyre going to follow us around. During this pandemic it definitely gets overwhelming since as much as I love and adore my cats, I don't think you're supposed to be around them this much. :P

    I’ve often wished I was the person that thought of this! It’s such an innovative use of leftover cardboard! I wish more inventors would make needed inventions from recycled items. Subs & liked. I like your approad to cats as an owner & lover of cats rather than an “expert”.

    Only thing I can think of is to glue carpet around the outside and rope in a ring on the bottom for three types of scratching surfaces.

    Luved the video! I am a NY foster mom for kittens & since I always spend money on toys it gets costly. So this was helpful & will have my husband to help. I got ideas from your project. Perhaps adding levels to this scratcher. One medium size place on top of the large & build up horizontally. Even put two or three adjacent to each other & increase width & height. Would make a geometric giagantor! For those with space. We rescued 2 Siamese, 2 main coon, 4 tabbies, 8 in total, so need toys & beds for them. Thank you again!

    Soak the rope in vinegar and baking soda for one hour to remove and neutralize formaldehyde. Rinse and repeat. Natural ropes usually have it to mitigate insect damage. It's not good. Most pet store varieties come with a stamp to show it has the acceptable amount of formaldehyde. It's kind of a thing.

    As I was watching your video, I thought why not make a rectangular one. Take a longish box, cut strips, glue together and put snug in the longish box. I think I will try that instead of cutting and rolling.

    I really like this, esp for small appartments. I don't have room for most of the cat scratchers i could buy...
    ideas! Maybe using a more neutral contact paper / solid darker color and then adding feet to make it look like a short ottoman?. I'm thinking 3 one inch tall feet made out of cardboard. Maybe that is just cut out, stacked and glued together instead of rolling it too.

    • @CatsandPats

    I like the idea. I think I could polish up the finished look by using a cylinder or pipe to curl the cardboard first a little. Kind of like ironing the cardboard. It will make rolling it up less effort and faster. I can't wait to try this for my kitty! I love working with paper so this should be fun.

    I run the cardboard through the bottom of my foot to 'break' the corrugation a little bit and it is a lot easier to role. Also, a glue gun is easier and you only need to put a dab every few inches to hold it is place. Also, be careful which direction you cut. One way makes for a rounder, less haphazard scratching pad, but if you cut it so the corrugation stand up (imagine looking down through a straw), it will also be easier to role and will look much better. I found colourful duct tape (cut cardboard to just a little wider than the duct tape) to wrap around it for a finished look. Sold about 100 of them a trip fundraiser for my niece, with her helping make them. But then my cardboard supplier couldn't get any more, lol. He even pr-ecut long strips for me from leftover cardboard (the luxury of having someone who worked in a paperbox factory)

    • @devrabiallas1292
      @devrabiallas1292 6 років тому

      if you're still looking to make more of these for your fundraiser you might want to hit your local liquor stores and pick up the empty boxes they accumulate I know that's where I go when I need boxes to pack in when I move they would have endless supplies if you checked out all of your liquor stores

    • @cathystewart-mott7679
      @cathystewart-mott7679 6 років тому

      No, I am good! The trip was about 1.5 years ago. That said, if and when I make more, that would be the plan to collect boxes locally. A little more work, but still doable. :)

    • @CatsandPats
      @CatsandPats  6 років тому

      Awesome tips. Defintely when I did this, I messed up and had my strips perpindicular, so i didnt have the nice coorugated look. Kitties are still scratching on it though, so thats good. Thats a good tip about using your foot to help it bend easily.
      I would like to make more, but the cardboard cutting is the hard part- to cut it in bulk into nice strips. Do you have any ideas on how to do that easier? Or, what your supplier had in the paperbox factory to cut them? Some specialized device?

    • @devrabiallas1292
      @devrabiallas1292 6 років тому

      @@CatsandPats for cutting have you tried using an office size paper cutter? The long handle with the cutting edge should be able to go thru the cardboard, especially if the edge is not dull...that being said I'm going to give it a try with mine, which most certainly needs sharpening as it is 20 or more years old. I'll let u know.

      And it would be a little labour extensive for the money made. :) Might be good for fundraisers and such, as people could scour out cardboard boxes, etc. and any money made goes to the cause (i.e. a cat/pet rescue, let's say) Just don't feel the need to overdo the glue. Once done, and wrapped in duct tape or whatever, they are actually quite secure. And really only need to be 3 or so inches in thickness.

      I made it this week. It did take a while . . . ! ☺But I just put a continuous thread of glue down the length of the cardboard (rather than the height at the ends of the strips) so it never unraveled while I was wrapping it. I put some dangly toys down through the holes as well so now it doubles as a toy and scratcher!

    It might be cheaper to thread a big needle with string and use that instead of the hot glue for holding the cardboard together. It would be easy to punch through a single layer of cardboard with a fat metal needle.
