  • Welcome to another video! Thank you to Katt of ‪@kattweaver‬ for the photo shown in the thumbnail!
An important shout out to Bee of ‪@makerbee4888‬ for the HOT HOT take re: fiber artist as a term that is kinda trash! Thank you for bringing that to our attention.
This week is a little different. I asked my partner to join me to chat "unpopular" knitting opinions. I did my best to avoid specific business or people's names. However, there were a few that were mentioned in order for the topic to be discussed. We did our best to remain fair in our discussion and avoided sensational or exaggerated language. I ask that we keep comments in the same vein.
Only a few links to share:

Hey hey! Popping in here real quick to add on to the last opinion we discussed re: art v craft.
This take comes from conversations with Maker Bee (on IG and UA-cam), and Bee wanted to add something they think is important nuance.
"Artist" has an individualistic connotation, and as we become and have became more individualistic as a Western society, we tend to put emphasis on individual successes. This is when we see the rise of the term "fiber artist". This is at odds with the community that is exemplified in craft!
I think this is well illustrated by the number of social media accounts dedicated to our fiber crafts. We seek community in our crafts with other folks all the time! I really loved this take and this addition makes it even better.
Thanks for watching and reading! See you all soon.

Awesome episode! First timer here and the last one was fascinating. My take on it is - what makes an artist an "artist"? If I tried to wrap hundreds of yards of bright colored fabric around a building in downtown (fill in random big city), I would be stopped and told to desist. I could hem and haw all day long that I am an "artist" but no one would care or believe me. Now, if I had wealthy backers promoting me, paying for my supplies, getting the proper permits, and telling the world that I am an "artist", then I could wrap that building with hundreds of yards of bright colored fabric and it would be celebrated as an achievement. I guess what I am getting at is that money and prestige make a huge difference between a "crafter" and an "artist", whether fair or not.

I am SO happy that this video came up on my UA-cam recommended list - time to go watch everything else 😅 Your discussion about fiber artist vs craft was so interesting to me, especially because I have a background in the art world, specifically museum studies (and museums as inherently colonial institutions). I worked as education/security staff in a contemporary art museum for a while and one of the exhibitions they had was fiber arts. And guess what? Mostly men. Almost all white.
I think a big issue with the term "fiber arts" is that it's almost like wanting to be part of what's counted as "high brow" art, rather than being like 'no, this distinction between what's seen as low brow and high brow art is arbitrary and rooted in colonialism, white supremacy, and sexism and trying to become part of the "high brow" group is just upholding that distinction.' It's like the kind of feminism that bashes anything associated with femininity instead of questioning why we assign value to things based on what gender they've typically been associated with and why we associated things with certain genders to begin with.

    • @sarahkarineknits
      @sarahkarineknits  10 місяців тому

I love what you shared about art and colonialism. It is definitely a weird thing to want to define knitting or spinning or any fiber craft as an “art” as if that makes it inherently “better”. That comes from somewhere and spoilers that somewhere is almost always white supremacy whether we realize it or not 🥲

@@sarahkarineknits I've been really enjoying your previous videos!! I really love that you shout out so many designers that aren't as well known - I feel like I've already found soooo many patterns that I've added to my favourites which is always exciting!! UA-cam is a LOT of work though so very understandable to not have uploaded in a while!
Yes exactly!! Having an umbrella term to be able to refer to knitting or crochet or spinning or other crafts is definitely useful but I hope that fibers arts doesn't become the most used term 😕 also just based on this and how you talk about knitting and consumerism on your channel, I highly recommend checking out the Crimson Stitchery, if you don't already follow her! She was one of the first knitting podcasts I found that wasn't so based around buying new things all the time and included conversations about bigger topics as well.

One of my issues with PK is that I find the pattern writing lazy and lacking especially when there are multiple of their patterns with the same silhouette with very little construction differences. Perhaps that speaks more to my skill set and mod abilities though.

This was a fun episode! We learned < and > as Pac Man. I'm glad you said that about the 1x1 tubular cast off on 2x2 rib, I knit a sweater with that earlier this year and kept thinking it just didn't look right! The statement on the term fiber arts/artist" is definitely thought provoking. I can definitely see that perspective, but I feel like without it we lack a good term to collectively talk about knitting, crochet, weaving, spinning, etc.

love you two. more, more, more.... Amen to the watching podcasts and seeing things - including what they knit almost exclusively - that make me never watch them again. I LOVE scrap projects - it's how I get almost ALL of my yarn. Nutiden...I don't get it, but more power to the folks who are in that cult (yes, I said it). I love fingering weight projects, and have been really into knitting sweaters these days. That said, I did knit 4 plutloppi sweaters immediately after returning from Iceland two summers ago. (Super bulky for the win). Yes, I jump into everything without "knowing" how to do it. And have never taken a class, because my budget goes toward essential items - yarn pretty much is it, and even that comes mostly from a local textile center garage sale.

Omg I'm dying, you two are so cute together. Also I would like to know who keeps doing the 2x2 -> 1x1 bind off, please - I so often ignore recommended bindoffs/castons XD
(Will be edited to add more comments as I'm watching, because live tweeting a knitting podcast is weird. Apparently)
I love how well Monica knows you - "Heathens!"
(Forgot to add this earlier - I also super agree with you re: The MFT and PK opinions, and only knitting big designers. Also I love the glass that Monica's using - very cool)
Also I will agree with you re: scrappy blankets and scrappy sweaters, but I love that Monica can draw the line between what she likes and you like. No one's going to catch me creating patchwork without buffer though - I personally find those ugly as sin.
Ooh I hadn't thought about that spin on "Fibre Artist" - I consider myself a crafter and not an artist when it comes to knitting and crochet, because oftentimes my energy and focus and interest is on the mechanics and the tecniques, not the end result or how everything goes together. I do think some knitters, dyers and designers are artists, I just don't consider myself one, nor do I think there's any virtue claim either way, but I hadn't thought about how calling it artistry harkens back to colonialism and erasing the poor past. Shall continue to have a think on it (Also continue to consider myself a crafter).
LOL IT WAS AM. Also I cracked up when Monica shoved her arm in front of you. I love my 3/4 sleeve though
Also re: swatching - I feel this "I wish I was a better swatcher" deeply. Although, one of my nieces has apparently generated an obsession with American Girl dolls, so I have been seriously considering knitting AM dolls sweaters as swatches.
(Also yes to the munching thing for greater than or less than- but I learned it as pacman because my classes was a bunch of *nerds*)

Ironically dispute my complaining, the tubular cast ok and bind off is really lovely. You can learn a sewn Italian bind off. It looks like tubular without the set up row. I’d also suggest learning German twisted to take place of long tail for stretch especially in cuff down socks!
