I’m a 50 years old movies lover from Italy and last month I finally took home an old ARRI ALEXA CLASSIC. It’s a 5200 hours ex-rental camera, totally serviced by ARRI at Munich last year, and with many accessories. It records only 2K, is cumbersome, is heavy, built and colored like a war tank. But I just don’t care… After owning BLACKMAGIC, CANON and SONY, this was my dream. And is finally a reality. The next step is to find an old external ARRIRAW recorder like CODEX or CONVERGENT DESIGN. But I’m in no hurry. Cheers from Italy.

      Hi,
yes it's performing very well! I can tell you that the colour separation of the ProRes 444 file is fantastic. I bought a M42 to PL mount lens adapter, so I could mount 50/60's 35 mm manual lenses like MEYER-OPTIK or HELIOS. With these old lenses the camera permorms very well with a very organic look. You can "feel" the texture of flesh. Now I'm in a negotation to buy an old CODEX M onboard recorder so I could try the 2,8K ARRIRAW file. Cheers

I purchased a Arri Alexa Classic a few months ago and i must say IT IS AMAZING!!! for narrative filmmaking hands down best camera by far. nothing comes close without spending 10 times the amount on a newer Arri. The 1920x1080 ProRes 4444. looks WAY WAY better than several 4k cameras Ive owned. and also the way it renders motion is so smooth and dreamy. my camera was owned by Paramount studios to shoot massive blockbuster films. good enough for me....Im running with the PL mount SLR Magic Hypo primes that look amazing and very Cook s4 like. If your primarily looking to shoot narrative shorts or features and want that true Hollywood look without busting the bank. look no further. this camera is it. hand down. There is NO close second at even 5 times the price.

What battery's are you using if you don't mind me asking? I want to go gold mount but there is so little out there about it in terms of how many volts they should be etc. When I bought the alexa it came with a gold mount and a v-mount but the v mount only takes 26v and above battery's. Wondering if anyone can clarify if you can get away with 14v battery's with the alexa classic?

    • @redplanet76

@@danielkeane1225 yes you can. It's a bit confusing but the manual clears it up. "The ALEXA accepts an input voltage range from 10.5 to 34 V DC. The
camera can be powered through the BAT connector or battery adapters
accepting V-Lock or Gold Mount batteries.
The power supply should deliver an output of more than 90 W to power
the camera sufficiently. The power draw of the camera in basic

Dont rush your purchase. In the first days of June, Arri will present the Arri 4K Super 35. A lot of productions will try to sell first gen digital Arri's cameras. Wait a month or two a least to see how the price will move. As the classic will demand to have (expensive) sticks, you will need some extra cash.

The Alexa ALEVIII sensors will always be classic. The new sensor is on the horizon, but I really don’t think that makes these cameras obsolete. It’s almost like choosing a film stock. Thanks for making the video! I hope to see you do one on the F35 too.

Godspeed to all the madlads who pick one of these up! The recent affordability of things like v-locks, PL lenses, matte boxes, ND filters make it doable. I also think Blackmagic pocket shooters (for example) own a lot of that kind of stuff already. The tripod is probably the single biggest challenge in terms of stuff to buy.
If you could crank out a few shorts on it it may be worth it. Get some things made and hope it doesn't need any repairs.
It's also probably also a bad idea to sell your other cameras and then shoehorn it into a corporate/content shoots where a Canon/Sony is so much better suited. If you get paid the same for using a C70, FX6 etc then it's not worth the sweat and muscle aches from operating one of these.

I purchased an Alexa plus 3 years ago, it's hands down the best camera i've ever owned. I have it paired with an Odyssey 7Q for ArriRaw recording (which records ArriRaw 2880x1620 up to 60fps) and the combo is perfection. Arri's 2880x1620 is the sweet spot for shooting humans BTW, more than enough resolution so the image doesn't look too soft like 1080 but not to digital and sharp looking like the new sensors. ARRI's are built like you'd imagine an 80,000 camera would be vs most sub $5000 cameras which are made very cheaply, reflecting the cost. These come up with 2000 or so hours sometimes though for pretty cheap. Sometimes its more about how rough the camera was used vs the hours though.

i seen this old Alexa with 2,000 something hours, is that for real? or they are doing some software trickery just like cars mileage? LOL the quality is incredible.

Old Alexas can have many thousands of hours of use. Users can't mess with that number. Ive seen upwards of 10k hours on older models ... they still work great.

Today, there are dozens and dozens of cameras that are all within 99% of each other in terms of dynamic range and image quality. Of all this Arri footage you shot here, if you said it was all shot on Camon C300 or RED Komodo, I would never have doubted you. The truth is, nobody can watch a commercial, TV show or movie and say:
"Yeah, that easily is an Alexa shot"
"Yup, that shot is a Canon C70"
"Oh that cut was with a Sony FX9"
"That shot was clearly a Lumix S1H"
Nobody on planet Earth can identify images that way anymore. Top Gun Maverick was shot on Sony Venice but if you told me it was shot on Arri?...there is no way I would be able to say you were lying to me.
Today?....its not about the camera anymore the way it used to be.
Its not the arrow, its the indian.

Professional DP’s can tell the difference, but most non-DP’s have no clue… if all one hour dramas shot on television switched over to the Black Magic pocket camera the only people that would know are DPs… with that said as a DP I would pick the arri, even the 12 year old arri over any other camera today…

If anybody here could tell me how to transfer your footage to your computer after you shoot with this camera or the XT model, I would really appreciate it, so far the only way to do it is by using the codex drive reader (for a stupid price of about $10,000 US dollars if you're lucky to find one) please let me know if I'm wrong and what other solutions can I find.

Nothing says wannabe cinematographer more than shooting every freaking scene with the widest aperture you can so you can impress everybody with your blurry, backgrounds, and lack of any depth of field
The cameras are told to tell a story not to show off your technology. I guarantee you can watch any film shot by a good cinematographer and you’re not gonna notice background blur or foreground blur. It’s done with tact and with skill.
Blurry background cinematography attention to itself, and takes away from the story and pulls people into the technology instead of into the story
    Bad, bad, bad bad bad
