  • Whats gucci youtube, in today's Monday night upload we take a look at the Olympus Om2s Program and go out to shoot some street photography! We shot some expired film from 2006! And grain galore!! The camera is very capable of creating really great images, simple yet sophisticated in it's own way, it has its own story that sets it apart from other cameras. I'm not sure what it is but, this is one heck of a camera. Drop a like if you wanna see more videos like this!! #MinoltaGang
    ABOUT IMPRESSIONS: This is a short segment at the end of the video of some of my fellow film shooters out here on youtube! This is NOT to be taken as offensive nor am I trying to make fun or belittle them in anyway instead it's for entertainment purposes ONLY. Most of the people you see on this segment will be because I appreciate them and took time out of my day to honor them. If you are selected, please do not take this the wrong way :)

      As a Nikon fanboy I also shoot and shot with: OM10, OM2n, 35 SP rangefinder, XA, XA2, Mju 1, Mju 2, Mju zoom versions, Trip 35. I have but not shot Trip 35 AF, Trip 35 AF MD and some others. Nothing wrong with Olympus. Still not Nikon :p

      oh and Pen EE-2. That one you should find, test en review. 72 exposures on a 36 film. Great for making another style panoramas. Google for Olympus pen panoramas. See for examples this: www.flickr.com/search/?text=olympus%20pen%20ee%20panorama Just ask the lab not to cut the film but deliver it on cardboard roll so you can cut it yourself (otherwise they cut straight trough the wrong places)

      Great video ! I usually shoot in 35mm : Olympus OM2n, OM1n , Ricoh TLS 401, Praktika Super TL, and in 120 : Bronica ETR and a Yashicamat 124G. I'm looking for an OM2s and an OM4(Ti). I was Pentax a few years ago but since I tried Olympus, I switched. I also had a Lubitel and an Kiev 88 but they both died after a few years of work.

      Yep, shoot mainly Nikon for 35mm and Ebony for 4x5 but have Olympus OM1n, 3x Om2n’s, Om40 and an Om4 and still love the compact size in my hand and the lovely smooth wind on feel. I have just re foam sealed three of them and changed some screens. Absolutely lovely cameras which just go on and on if you get a good one thats not been too much abused or dropped. Price as I write in Dec 2020 have increased quite a lot compared to last year, maybe because of Covid and people looking to revisit their hobbies. The more people we have who shoot plastic the longer we can keep it going. I do use digital as have D800 and D600 but I still get a huge pleasure from the tactileness of loading shooting and developing film.
      Great Vid and nice presentation, your camera could do with a service, youll enjoy it far more!

    Since I bought my first real camera, a new Minolta X-700 in 1983, I was a Minolta guy. Then, about 5 years ago, I bought a mint Nikon F2 from a guy on CraigsList for just $80 and I became a Nikon guy. Now, since earlier this year, I've finally came around to the Olympus OM series. I've found several nice OM cameras, with lenses, for crazy cheap on various local selling apps. The first was an OM2n, then 2 OM2 Programs, then a really clean OM1n. I sold one of the OM2SPs, for almost 4 times what I paid for it, so basically, the others at this point were free. Not sure why I shunned or dismissed OM cameras for 3 decades, maybe the small size or odd shutter speed selector placement (which I now LOVE), but I think they are just brilliant little cameras and the lenses are superb.

    Wahh..they are all equal camera beings anyway...all the Canons, Hassies, Kievs, Leicas, Olympuses or Minolta live in perfect harmony side by side on my shelf or in my bag. Never had any complains from them you know? BTW: I am celebrating "Minolta-Weeks" on my channel right now (but sadly not in english ;-) ) 303, XE-1, XD-7 ... checked...some XGs and the X-700 still to come. Also Olympus OM2S and OM4Ti as one can never check out too many cameras, right? One more thing: I love your work

    I just bought an OM-2S program from Etsy, showed up yesterday. Loaded it with a roll of Ilford XP2 B&W, just need stay at home to end. The wind lever is exactly the same as yours, seem to be a common complaint. I also have an OM-2N, I’ll see which I prefer.

    Nice vid again, bro. Two things: Your darker photos seem almost more muddy than grainy. Probably to low exposure and (unintentially) corrected or by the lab or your scanner or you?
    Another thing: I have the OM2n and my advance lever is kinda the same. Not like it has left the factory like that I guess. Opened mine from the top, removed some pieces and tried to find out. The axis of the lever seem to be a bit sticky. Gave it a bit of watchmaker oil and cleaned it. It's behaving better now but not 100%.
    Alright, a third thingie than for you: the sound of the shutter/mirror? Could be as intended. When they upgraded from OM2n to OM2s program they came with a double mirror construction or somewhat. That's also the reason true OM1/2 lovers stay with the OM1 en 2 (with n version). I couldnt care less (just like you I think) but so you know. Keep it up!

    I just picked up one of these beauties on fleabay in awesome condition, my only beef so far is the LCD display of shutter speeds in the viewfinder is very faint and hard to read, same with the match display in manual/spot mode. I must admit my eyes are not as sharp as they once were, but even so I was expecting something easier to read. Maybe a diopter adjustment like on the OM4 would help?

  • @DennisSulz

    Just picked one up yesterday. Thought it was a dud as I tried it with batteries that were 1.2 volts and nothing happened. Got some new 1.4 volt batteries and worked fine. Just shot my first roll without problems. Ordered some silver oxide 1.55 volt batteries. Hope it's not a battery bitch but I'll take it with me for a few days and hope for the best. Also got the power winder 2 with it. The OM 2 SP was still in its original box with a few signs of use but very pleased with the look/operation of it.

    Awesome camera like all Olympus OM cameras in the system. The OM system is just legendary. I plan to get me a Olympus OM-1 MD because I don't like the battery dependency of the OM-2 and OM-2 SP. I like the OM-1 more because it is all mechanical. :)

    I forgot to tell you in the last video; when you shoot in program or aperture priority mode, your metering is on average. However, when you set the camera in manual, it is set on spot metering. Hence spot/program.
    And weird shutter luping sound you hear is quite normal; this was one of first cameras (along with F3) with secondary mirror underneath the main one (translucent one), which was used so bounce light towards light sensors/meter. A common practice in contemporary DSLR-s, however back then the system was not so refined...

    • @KingJvpes
      @KingJvpes  6 років тому +2

      That makes a TON of sense now, I noticed that little secondary meter in there but didn't really know what it was. Good to know man haha thank you! And also you're very educated with cameras! I envy you!!!

    • @irvvine
      @irvvine 2 роки тому

      I think the strange shutter sound may have something to do with the Program mode. The other camera that I had, which made very similar shutter sound, was Pentax Super-A (also known as Super Program). Both cameras were one of the first to introduce Program mode in their respective lineups (which means they needed the all-new ability to do quick and precise movements of aperture coupler so the camera was able to close the aperture to specific position without setting the aperture position on the ring in the lens barrel), however the Pentax did not have a double mirror for off-the-film light meter and instead used a traditional metering off the focusing screen. Also in Pentax, the depth of field preview lever used the aperture coupler of the camera (as opposed to Olympus which had the preview button built into the lens itself) making this mechanical clock winding noise when pressed or released (similar to mechanical self-timer sound).
      Of course I may be totally wrong and this shutter sound may as well be caused by two completely different things on both cameras. But is looks like an interesting coincidence that both cameras were one of the first to introduce Program mode and camera-steered aperture value in their lineups while also being the first to have this strange shutter sound but using completely different shutters (Pentax has vertical metal, Olympus has horizontal cloth) and mirrors (Pentax has single solid, Olympus has double with main mirror being translucent).

    • @tomislavmiletic_
      @tomislavmiletic_ 2 роки тому +1

      @@irvvine Back in the day camera manufacturers made some parts / systems mechanical, some electrical, and combined in various ways; at that time it was all a lot of experimentation, they weren't sure how things should work. So some cameras suffer from some strange quirks, and strange / noisy shutter sound is a very mild one. The worst example might be the squeaking shutter sound produced by the Canon A1, if not fixed...

    I have a few OM Olys and I love them all. However, they all seem to have that special feeling with the film advance lever and the shutter sound, at least when compared to other SLRs. You might or might not get used to them. It sure took a bit time for me to get adjusted, and even now those ”issues” make me feel I’m using a cheaper camera than I’m actually using.
