The 'barless' frame is made from steel, not from cast iron like all other pianos. Cast iron cannot deal with twisting forces (they crack) so they are reinforced with all the typical struts (and some, typically Bechsteins, still crack). The Broadwood's malleable steel barless frame twists slightly under string tension (completely harmless to the frame).

Great video Marcus. I remember we had a Barless Broadwood grand at Newark Piano School. Infact, it was the very piano I passed my first grand tuning test on!
