  • With building the Tower of Power, I have finally the opportunity to test the JK Inverter BMS with all its features. I have now several of these BMS in different batteries installed and we can do all kind of testing to explore how these BMS will work together. Or not...
    Here in this first video, I show you in all details how to parallel the JK Inverter BMS and connect it to your inverter. We also talk about the master-slave roles and how to set the DIP switches correctly. Is there a difference between V14 and V15 of their BMS when paralleling?
    Let me know in the comments how you go with your JK Inverter BMS and what issues you had or still have.

    Things I learnt. Vertical batteries take up more floor space but if you need to access a horizontal battery in a tower of batteries then prey it isn't on the bottom. Oh - and the phrase 'day of time' which I guess is only used like 'power of tower' after a glass of wine.

    Hey Andy, I have three V15 BMS in one system and a mix V14/V15 at a mates site. I can confirm V15/V14 interact correctly. But also that only the master cell voltage/temperature is being transmitted to the Victron system. When I was contacting JK I got zero response. It's a bummer that a simple feature like this is not working. Otherwise the BMS is great.

    Another Great video Andy. I have similar, it was 2 x v14 and 1 x v15, but one of my original V14's keeps dropping coms. Its now 2 V15 and the master is a V14. Just how it worked out as I bought two more and they came as V15. BUT I noticed once on Cerbox that one battery was missing. So I started logging the CCL charge value in VRM and found that in a 24 hour period, one of the V14's would drop off the coms (new it was a 14 due to the amount the charge limit dropped) at random times and for random periods. Will be interesting if you add this to VRM and see if you have the same issue. It at first sounded a bit like you bricked unit, but it still communicated some times. Interestingly enough the faulty one was the master. it stopped providing its own data, but still passed the other two onto the CAN bus... The master is still the V14 (the working one) and the other two are V15's been no coms drop now for nearly 2 weeks.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  21 день тому

      JK has mentioned, they don't recommend mixing V14 and V15. I didn't accept that answer and started testing. Now they say, V15 should be the master... I have the V14 as master atm and it seems to work. Haven't seen any dropouts yet.

    Curious to see how you hook the dissimilar battery units up. And because the inverter only knows the total power it can send to the stack, how do you ensure a smaller battery pack does not get too much power forcing the bms to shut it down..? I'm a complete noob by the way, but trying to understand how all off this works! Thanks for you fabulous content!

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  20 днів тому +1

      Thanks for your feedback.
      All BMS communicating to the master which then sends the aggregated data to the inverter/charger.
      Following example:
      Master battery: 280Ah, max charge current set in the BMS 100A
      Slave1 battery: slave100Ah, max charge current 35A
      Slave2 battery: 320Ah, max charge current 120A
      The master will report 100A+35A+120A as the maximum charge current to the inverter.
      Slave2 turns off, due to high temperature. The master will report only 100A+35A to the inverter.
      Slave1 turns off due to cell high voltage. The master will only report 100A+120A to the inverter.
      If the master and slave 2 turn off, the master will still report 35A to the inverter.
      I'll show this in one of the next videos.

    Just putting together the first of my Gobel power boxes. Mine came with solid bus bars with the screw hole in the centre 14 large, 1 mid sized (rear), and 2 half size for the first terminals. Not sure how I feel about them as you can't super tighten the terminal screws as you'll strip the tiny screw heads, however you don't have to mess about stripping wires/attaching new terminals. I think you might be wrong about not needing to join 2 cables to the rear/mid busbar at least with these mid mounted terminals as all the other cells can be measured/balanced between cables on the same looms, if you don't double up on the rear busbar you end up with a single cell between looms 2 and 3.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  21 день тому

      I tighten the terminals with 4Nm only. The balance cables need a lot less of course, Just use a screwdriver and tighten them by hand, that's all.
      What BMS have you got with your GP box, JK or Pace? The JK balance cables have a gap on the third connector after the two black temp sensors and only the last cable of 2nd connector is connected to cell 8.

      #2 JK-PB1A16S10P, V14
      #3 JK-PB2A16S20P, V14
      #4 JK-PB2A16S20P, V15
      #5 JK-PB2A16S20P, V15 (master)
      All BMS have RCV and RFV, same features.
      Only the master needs to have the correct RCV set which will be reported to the inverter.

    How many total kWh of battery do you have?
    If i can remember correctly, two DIY 16kWh in the shelves, 3x 16kWh Gobel batteries, two or three Seplos 5.1kWh, and I think another set of 3 5.1kWh batteries
    I think i saw 4 Victron MPPTs?
    The solar system I want to set up will use mostly Victron equipment.
    I want at least two sets of 16kWh batteries in the Apexium DIY kits, with the JK BMS. It has a center screw position to help put compression on the batteries.
    At least 8kW in panels and up to 24kW in inverters

    So irrelevant of assembly manufacturer as long as the bms are the same manufacturer we can add more storage?
    One assumes on ahybrid system 48v you can't intermix as an example a pace and seplos bms and daisy chain them together in a hybrid inverter.
    I ask the group as my storage at present is all 48v pace bms units and the supplier says I can only add more of there units.
    I think they mean more pace bms controlled batteries and the assembly manufacturer is irrelevant.
    Anyone know so when I buy some.more storage I get it correct.
    Thank you.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia

      Correct. Only the same BMS can talk to each other. JK and Seplos won't talk. JK and Pace, no chance. Seplos and Pace, no no...
      We will have a solution for that in the future though. Peter is working on it...

  • @AshleyL-.-L
    @AshleyL-.-L 21 день тому

    Well, the so called controlled float charge will never work with Growatt and Lux inverter. The moment the SOC 100% is triggered by either coulomb counter or 100% RCV, both Growatt and Lux inverter will stop charging immediately leaving no time for balancing to happen. Worse, it causes battery not to be fully charged at all.
    Reposting one of the comment from ... at diysolar forum below:
    The issue is more of a philosophical one:
    JK considers that the cell is at 100% SOC during the entire CV period of the charge (RCV->RFV->RCV cycle when float mode is enabled).
    This is enforced in the firmware by requiring that 'soc-100% volt' must be set below the RCV (presumably to ensure that the cell SOC is reset reliably at each charge). This makes sense from a coulomb counting point of view, as the trigger point where you go from CC to CV charging is the most reliable time to reset the coulomb counter. But the SOC is not truly 100% the moment that you hit RCV, you need to let the battery absorb!
    However... luxpower, et al, look at the situation differently, and as soon as the battery reports 100% SOC it turns the charge controller off completely. This does makes sense from a true SOC perspective, because if the battery is reporting 100% SOC why bother keeping the charge controller on. But, with the way JKBMS reports the SOC, this means that the charge controller turns off as soon as one cell in the battery hits RCV (or worse yet: if you have negative drift in the coulomb counter it will report 100% SOC before you even get to that point!), so no absorption or balancing is possible.
    They both make compelling arguments, but their logic is mutually incompatible. Either JKBMS needs to report the SOC as 99% during the whole of the absorption process (as the infamous 'peter boards' do), or the inverter needs to actually respect the pylontech 'charger enable' flag and leave the charge controller enabled as long as the BMS requests charging.
    edit : I already sent several emails to jkbms teams and requested the BMS to report 99% during "RCV Time" and switched to 100% after the timer expired, but never get any feedback from them. Perhaps Andy can help to contact them? Otherwise, those with Voltronic OEM inverter like Growatt and Lux will never get a working "Controlled Float Charge"

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  20 днів тому

      Would a possible solution be to set SOC to 100% once the RFV is activated?

    • @AshleyL-.-L
      @AshleyL-.-L 20 днів тому

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia Yes, this solution would be an ideal for those with Voltronic OEM based inverter (such as Growatt and Luxpower). 99% during throughout the "RCV Time" and change to 100% right after "RFV Time" activation. Is it possible for you to send a request to your JKBMS contact about this issue? I doubt Voltronic, Growatt, Luxpower are willing to modify the charging behavior.
      The JKBMS will have to prevent "SOC-100% Volt" setting and Coulombmeter counting from triggering 100% SOC. Instead, report the SOC as 99% throughout RCV Time and only report 100% once RFV is activated when controlled float mode is enabled.
