  • The new JK Inverter-BMS is now on the market for a few months and gets constantly updated with new Firmware updates. It is time to make a video and explain all the setting, features and function of this great BMS. As this BMS has now a full charge algorithm and a lot more settings than the previous versions, it can be quite confusing and difficult to get started.
    In this Video, I show how I would setup the BMS in a production environment and how to set important features like absorption and float voltage and the respective timers.
    I also explain how the buzzer and both relays can be programmed. These are fantastic features which came with one of the last updates.
    This video was made with firmware v14.20.
    The new JK Inverter-BMS with all features, functions and prices. 16s 100A, 150A or 200A all with active balancer and all features as shown in the video:

    Andy, about your question for the use of sense wire resistance : there is a current flowing during balancing, thus also a small voltage drop. If you enter the wire resistance, the BMS can compensate for the voltage drop and make balancing more precise. Otherwise the voltage will slightly drop with the balancer off, causing the balance to stop just a bit to early. But the voltage drop with the standard cables at 1A won't be much.
    But with longer wires it might be needed.

    • @EvrnDiller
      @EvrnDiller 8 місяців тому

      Would be about 100mV drop with an amp in 6' of 22awg? I'm guessing it's already compensated, with the adjustment for calibrating for cut or extended leads.

      Thank you. As I said, the BMS is 'clever' enough not to balance and measure at the same time, so resistance should not matter.

    You had mentioned the pre discharge feature and weren't sure of the function. This feature uses a timed cycle prior to the mosfets or contactor engagement to charge the capacitors through a resistor to reduce the huge spike of inrush current and prevent damage to the pass device ( such as welded contacts or putting on contactors or literally blasting mosfets off the PCB substrate/

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  4 місяці тому +1

      The BMS cannot really distinguish about a pre-charge or a short. With a capacitor connected, voltage will raise slowly, with a short, it will not. JK told me this function is not working 100% accurately as it needs to make a decision in a few microseconds if it is either or.

    • @robertandersonEVs
      @robertandersonEVs 4 місяці тому +3

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia I build EVs for special purpose use as well as portable battery power systems. I understand what you are saying regarding the pre- charge because I've been dealing with large capacitor inrush in motor controllers at much higher voltages. There are BMS examples using three contactors to tackle the problem, with one for charge, one for discharge, and the third with a series resistor that limits the current upon initial closure of the contacts. The rise of the voltage at the capacitors is measured and when a pre determined voltage is reached the discharge contactor is closed safely. Another method would be to allow a fixed time after pre charge is closed to allow the rise.
      Sensing the difference between a short and caps charging would involve precise measurement of the leading spike of the current waveform as compared to the capacitor charging spike which would typically flatten more quickly. Problem there is that shorts can be in full contact or partial contact. That is why proper fusing is vital.
      Love your channel by the way. I have tested 50+ BMS units. Ten years ago I was designing and building them myself. Twenty years ago I was making them using no microprocessors. All analog. At times I think those were better.😁

    hey Andy! nice videos, I always enjoy. I recently setup a victron system with a DIY battery and new JK inverter 200A BMS (no smartshunt, JK calling the shots... risky ? haha). Anyway, its all working pretty well aside from a few niggles... (the JK is running the latest firmware as of a month ago or so, 15.something I think)
    1) the battery capacity / consumed / remaining AH doesn't seem to be sent to the cerbo by the JK, is this normal or something is up with my system? do you think JK will fix it?
    2) my RCV is 3.45V, 100% soc 3.449 iirc, but sometimes if the soc is >85% or so and a big charge comes in (4+kw) from a brief burst of sun some cells momentarily jump up to 3.45V, the SOC jumps from 85% eg. straight to 100%. Bit of an issue with their algorithm, I wonder if they would add a timer or something in future or a tail current before SOC reset, maybe you could mention it to them?
    cheers :)

    Hey Andi. Nice Video. I am using the Old JKBMS because you has shown it here. But the Inverter BMS looks interesting.
    One option I would like to have. Is that the timer for the Float Mode is not Hard Konfigured. I would like that when 55.2V is reached an the Balancer is active it keeps staing on 55.2. When then the Balancer tourns off, because the cells are now equal with there Voltage. Now the Float Mode is Communicated to the Cerbo.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  7 місяців тому +1

      Yes, that is another way of doing it. However, the Victron MPPTs and chargers are all having fixed timer settings for this feature as well.
      The cell deviation does not mean the cells are all absorbed. So, we would need a tail current here as well: charge to 55.2V and only go to float if balancer is off and current is below a certain threshold. But here again a pitfall: if you have clouds, the current may be very low and the BMS 'thinks' the battery is absorbed and switches to float mode prematurely.
      Hence a timer is the most consistent method for charging.
      There is no harm of keeping the cells on 55.2V for 1h before going to float.

    Good morning Andy,
    Unfortunately I have to write to you again, my BMS doesn't allow some settings, here are two examples: Vo. Cell RCV (V). Cannot be set below 3.551 volts. But in the off-grid garage I see a value of 3.45, and values below 3.551 always result in the message Sending failure.
    The same with the SOS 100% settings, the app doesn't accept a lower value than 3.541 volts.
    Is there something like the expert mode in Victron, or is that down to the version?

    HI, I find this whole subject very interesting and enjoy your insight. My problem and possible solutions - I have 4 batteries, all different makes, if I chain them together using the RS485 interfaces the BMS's do not communicate well and I get all sorts of wrong data reported to the Multiplus-II via the CAN interface. So, I am planning on replacing the BMS with JK BMS in all 4 batteries to get them compatible. The question is what JK BMS boards do I use ! Option 1 - replace all 4 with the JK BMS Inverter boards, most expensive option. Option 2 - Replace the battery BMS I will use for the CAN connection with the JK BMS Inverter board and replace the other 3 with the JK BMS (non Inverter boards), will they all talk to each other OK via the RS 485 ? Would the Peter interface boards help here ? Option 3 - replace all 4 with the JK BMS (non inverter boards) . Option 4 - replace all 4 with the JK BMS (non inverter boards) and connect together with the Peter interface boards ?

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  7 місяців тому +1

      Hello, thanks for your question(s).
      Option1 seems to be the cleanest and cheapest option (see below)
      Option2 will not work. the inverter BMS will not communicate with the older BD series of BMS. The Peter board solution will not (yet) connect old an new JK together. A solution will be provided in the future though.
      Option3: there will be no coms between the BD BMS unless you use something like the Peter boards for all of them (more expensive than Option1

    Great stuff, thanks for your help, Andy. I use a few of them, simply because my car taught me the huge advantage of user firmware update. Do you know, if they will include Epever MPPT controllers in their communications menue? Also: If one cell goes overvoltage the bms would command the charge controllers to stop changing??

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  7 місяців тому

      The BMS will not talk to MPPT chargers directly. Only to an inverter-charger (hybrid inverter) or the Victron Venus OS (which then controls the MPPTs).
      Yes, any OV, OT or OC will stop the charging process of the inverter. Same as UV will stop discharging

    Andy, thanks for another great video. Could it be that Cell OVPR(V) means that the system will not allow more current to flow into the battery, but that it will allow a discharging current? You would get safer voltages much earlier than with a full disconnect. Or would that only work this way k with systems with a different Charge and Discharge port? It would be relatively easy to use the MosFets as diodes, allowing current out, but not current in when voltage is above OVP

    Hi Andy,
    I've been following you for some time and I'm building my own DIY photovoltaic system. I have almost everything and the only thing missing is the batteries and until a while ago I was very skeptical about lifepo4 and I was leaning towards gel agm, considering them less dangerous. and being in possession of a !mpp solar pip 4860 LC" inverter which is a little old but in real mule without a lot of "electronics" so it cannot be connected to my Tracer 10420AN regulator nor to the BMS.
    do you think that you can only manage the batteries and any protections on the regulator or is something simpler better, I like this BMS that you have illustrated very well and I am tempted to buy it, but I wouldn't want to make an oversized expense since it doesn't communicate with my inverter.

      Any BMS calculates the SOH as per some algorithm. We don't know how and what the calculation but I'm sure, every manufacturer uses their own calculation. So, personally, I would not care too much about it. We don't know for sure what the real SOH is unless we do a full capacity test again as we did at the beginning for this particular cell. So take this with a good with a good pint of salt and use it as a rough guide only.

    6:14 If 3.650V is the value of this setting, then, what if the JK voltage calibration is no so good (about 10 or 20mV of error, for example) and/or the voltage of one cell is bigger than 3.650V before is detected by BMS? Could it damage that cell?

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  7 місяців тому

      The voltage calibration of the JK is on battery level. So if the overall battery voltage is off by 0.2V and we have a 16s battery, accuracy for the cell voltage could be impacted by 12mV. I wouldn't be too concerned about 10 or 20mV.

    JK are missing out on a huge customer base (and you on a massive load of new viewers!) People in boats and camper vans need a BMS where the relay can be programmed to disconnect on any situation that would cause a charge disconnect so as to save the alternator diodes from going pop when this disconnect happens. The relay would be used to disconnect the alternator field wire in any event that causes a charge disconnect. A delay of a second or so before the actual charge disconnect would be ideal too. If a temperature sensor could also be connected to the alternator frame and be used to reduce charge current at high alternator temperatures then JK would have a BMS that would really appeal to boaters and campervanners. It is a huge market that is now really getting into LifePo4 but at the moment but is having to deal with the alternator diode popping and alternator overheating problem by using either DC-DC (very inefficient) or smart alternator regulators such as the Wakespeed or Mastervolt Alpha Pro III (very efficient and good for alternator temperature control but still no good for charge disconnects) or even worse people are connecting their LifePo4 to a lead acid battery to protect from disconnects and then using a long wire from the alternator as a resistor to limit alternator output to stop their alternator burning up! (yes this really is a popular thing - especially on UK narrowboats and is being heavily promoted by people who don't know what they are talking about on places like FaceBook). Come on Andy get JK to build the ultimate BMS that works for home power situations as well as boats and campervans that need to use a BMS with an alternator.

    • @paulholland2380
      @paulholland2380 7 місяців тому +1

      Good point. I guess most of these applications retain a lead acid starter battery - so connecting the alternator (or alternators) can be wired to the start battery and then the cross charge to the lithium house bank can be done with an intelligent split charge relay. Of course this might still result in an unintended (and avoidable) disconnect of the domestic battery. But if the two dry contact relays can be programmed as Andy says (around 25 mins in) you could set a voltage above charge voltage limit - but before over voltage limit - to control a split charge relay or the field supply to the alternator. I think that would do it.

    Good run through.
    On the wire resistance settings, each BMS sense wire is shared between two adjacent cells. There is a resistance in the battery terminal ,about 0.05 milliohm for good terminal connection, and about 0.07 milliohm for nickel-plated copper core bus bar.
    When there is moderate inverter/charger current, the terminal and bus bar resistance effects the BMS cell voltage sensing. BMS has control over balancing current but does not have control over random inverter/charger current. BMS does read total battery current so it can calculate and wash out the voltage drop caused by battery terminal connection and bus bar. At 100 amps it can amount to 15 to 30 millivolt drop in cell voltage measurement. Not a lot of voltage but enough to cause balancer to make wrong decision on balancing choice.

I am using since a week now a Victron ESS with 3 MP2 5000, a Gobel Power GP-SR1-PC200 with a PaceBMS, a Victron SmartShunt and of course a CerboGX. Right now I let the BMS do the job. Means no float mode. How would you do the setup there to have absorbtion and float-mode? DVCC "ON" ControllingBMS "No BMS Control"? System Setup: Battery Monitor "SmartShunt"? Is there anything missing or is there any other alternative setup for it?

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  7 місяців тому

      Thanks Lukas. The PACE BMS does not have a float mode setting, so the BMS allows to charge to the absorption voltage and stays there until the sun goes down. If you set this voltage conservative, like 55.2V with 14A current, it should be OK.
      Definitely let the BMS control the Victron system through the DVCC and also set the BMS as you battery monitor. That is a huge safety feature. You actually don't need the smart shunt any more in this case as the BMS is now your shunt.

    For AC surplus charging in a grid-tie system, would it be an option to use a "dumb" non-controllable AC-DC converter, then use the BMS's current/power limiting function to regulate so that just the amount of energy lands in the battery that would otherwise be fad back into / lost to the grid? Controllable power supplies (like MeanWell NBP, Huawei R4850G2) can be hard to come by and more expensive, esp. when you have/need the BMS anyway.

    Can this BMS be used with non-networked chargers and inverters, similar to a standard JK BMS?
    I’m thinking of getting one to use by itself until I upgrade my inverter

    hello handy today I installed the jkxxxPB 2A150A I turned on inverter and it charged well my 280ah 16s ,up to 54.4v then I discharged some consumption and then I don't understand what happened the charge went OFF as if the bms froze at that cell voltage 3.35 , and there was no way to change the situation, but inverter still charged the battery up to 55.4 but in the display and in the app the voltage that gave me the BMS always that 3.35 even if the battery was at 55.4 I don't know how to get out of it ! If you have mail I would send you the photos of the config of the BMS copied from your grazie ❤❤❤

    Did you ever work out how to calculate SCP Delay?
    Im have an issue where my 240v fridge thats run off my 2000w pure sign inverter keeps activating my scp warning. I have just fitted a 4s jk bms to my eve 105 in place of my daly bms. This 1500 default setting is the only thing i can contribute to the actavtion of the bms shutdown.

    I dont have a Battery Tester to know the AH capacity of my cells.
    Can this new JK BMS automatically measure the total AH of the cells?

    does floating charge mode function even when communicating with the inverter through can or rs... or just when not using communication cable?

    PCL correspond to Parallel battery setup, presumably Parallel Control Logic. I remember when I started using this (only one unit btw) I had a error ( PL Module Abnormal) and I was suggested to turn off the PCL mode to resolve it.
    If you don't have Parallel setup, you can disable it.

      I wonder if you could use this BMS to run in parallel with an LG, cam battery and a sung inverter?

      PCL = Parallel Current Limiter?

      @@OffGridGarageAustralianah, my guess is better😂?
      The combined current at inverter is sum of individual current limit set at each BMS.

      So, confirmed: PCL stands for Parallel Charge Limiter and the dashboard will show if the BMS runs in this mode or not... Will be in one of the next videos 😄
