  • Previously we reviewed the HAAS UMC 500 5-axis milling center and gave it a score of 2.5/5. We were experiencing some issues with our machine that had really left us disappointed, but HAAS themselves visited our shop and helped us solve some of our problems. We learned a lot about planning the installation of new machines, and we want YOU to learn from our mistakes!

    The HFO shouldn’t have to put band-aids on the factories poor designs.

      True, but they are the link to haas and have been working on our issues. Hopefully the feedback gets back to haas directly to address in future builds.

    Hopefully the factory will start fixing these issues. They are usually pretty good about their revisions. Nice video thanks

    If you had not done that video they would have never done a single thing. I had the same issue with DMS. I made a video that got a ton of views and they fixed it in trade for the video being removed so the flaws they couldnt fix wouldnt be known.

    Props to Haas for looking deeper in to your problems but sad to see that you had to make it public for them to do so.
    The front of the table is not getting flushed enough imo, if you rotate the table while the pallet is changing it should give a safer pallet change.

    Spinning the rotary when that axillary coolant is going might be helpful in definitely preventing chips from hiding there

    We keep looking at a VF2 with the multi pallet pool. Do you know of other three axis options that have a multi pallet pool? Just looking for all potential options.

    I've been programming, setting up and running a VF4SS, VF2 and a ST20Y Lathe. First experience with Haas and I have to say there control is amazing but the machines just don't take a chip like some other stuff I've worked on. Aluminum you are fine but getting into some tougher materials and roughing cycles are tough to watch.

      more or less i agree with you. The machine is very convenient to the operator, and the control has some advantages and shortcuts compared to Fanuc but the machine lacks performance to attack harder materials or doing production jobs. I have worked with an DS30Y, VF2SSYT, VF3SS and UMC500 and my opinion is that if they are for low volume or unique parts in aluminum, non ferreous metals, plastics or light machining they might work, but for doing production jobs on steels or inox no

      Agreed, they're very accurate and easy to use. When it comes to harder materials, deep cuts are better left to seiki, johnsford, hurco. I've tried taking heavy cuts with insert cutters on haas and the spindle went out next day. I only ran one cycle that way since it was borderline alarming out. We keep our cuts light on the hard metals

    I think any new machine line is going to experience some amount of issue until they get out in the wild and customers are able to give feedback on issues. I do not know how long Haas tested the UMC 500, 1000, and the redesigned 750 before releasing them for production but any amount of general testing would (or should) have caught some of the issues like the coolant ponding up and the chip evacuation. No machine is perfect however, but it is good to see that Haas is willing to support and rectify the issues as they see fit to keep their customers happy. The UMC 500 is certainly a good entry level machine and has an extreme amount of potential for automation. However, I have seen a lot of the competition in recent years begin to give them some serious competition on both a performance and cost level. Okuma has released the new M560 5 axis machine built off of their tried and true Genos line, Mazak has released the new EZ series with an apples to apples competitor to the UMC500, and dont forget DN with the newer DVF4000. I love Haas verticals for their ease of use and ease of maintenance, but if I were going to buy a new, small foot print dedicated 5 axis it would be hard to go with the UMC knowing there are other options within 10% of the price of a UMC. Just an opinion, obviously.

    Ditch the hairnet chip strainer and get a Swarf-Unlimited sump filter, it's top tier convenient!

      @KreminIncManufacturing  8 місяців тому

      Interesting, we will check them out - how hard are they to clean?

    • @Black08Chally
      @Black08Chally 8 місяців тому

      @@KreminIncManufacturing No effing around with the hairnet, just clean it with a shopvac setup for wet only.

    • @wildbill7756
      @wildbill7756 4 місяці тому

      Swarf-Unlimited also have drop in coolant pump that have higher pressure rates, and they also have manifold which will allow you to divert and add coolant where you need it.
      In my case with a UMC1500 Duo, the base wash down nozzles don't move ANYTHING, on top that they are only spraying the front of the machine. So I have to cleanout the machine entirely after every use. Once our shop funds are at the right place, I can't wait to add not only increased pressure at the nozzles, but add a sprayer behind my tool change arm (HSK tool arm can cause clamping failure or even slams the edge of the taper shank into the face of the spindle if the holder is not grabbed properly by the changer due to chips.)

    We just got a 500ss installed last month. The coolant noise is real. Its odd though. The 120psi flood coolant is about as loud as our air compressor is at 115 decibels but the 1000 psi pump right beside it is as quiet as a normal pump. Not sure what to do but will probably have to contact haas since we are having a hard time hearing the machine while cutting.

    • @KreminIncManufacturing
      @KreminIncManufacturing  9 місяців тому

      Awesome! The noise is an issue - since we replaced the pump it has been much better.

      You need to go rotary screw on your air compressor. I didn’t for a long time, as it was a major cost, but if I were to start again it would be the first thing I’d buy

    What happened with moving the tool probe? Have you looked at Brother Machines? They are engineered way better.

      We haven't moved it yet, the current products we are running have not been a problem (yet) - Brother is on the list to look at when we are in the market for our next mill, we have heard good things. Looking at RoboDrills and Okuma also.

    Squeaky wheel gets the grease. A shame it takes a public review with some negative feedback to get things taken care of

      Thanks for the comment, I am not sure we have very much influence over UA-cam, but we have been very vocal behind the scenes with our HFO and they have been good about trying to work through the issues, should they be there at all - probably not. Hopefully the feedback gets back to Haas directly through the dealer.

    I run a haas dm1, now my factory we cut only plastic with it and do not use coolant at all, (which may be a lot of the problem) but we constantly have issues with oil leaks comming from the table, lube lines getting clogged, spindle motors craping out and we constantly get a fault code of “pressure detected prior to axis lubrication cycle” which nobody can seem to fix 🙄 overall I’m not a fan of haas machines

    The problems you are having are the same as most of the cnc shops are having.
    You do not strive to be better.
    The chip build up under the pallet plate during a pallet change is a easy fix.
